Synopsis
Prof.
Dr. Abdalla Uba Adamu (dob 25th April 1956, Kano, Nigeria) holds double
professorships in Media and Cultural Communication (from 2012) and Science
Education (from 1997) from Bayero University Kano, Nigeria.
He
was most recently European Union Visiting Professor for the project 'The Modern
University' at the Department of African Languages and Cultures, University of
Warsaw, Poland from 1st March to 31st May 2012. At Warsaw, he taught two highly
popular courses: Transnationalism and African Popular Culture, and Oral
Traditions in Local and Global Contexts.
His
main research focus is on transnationality with emphasis on cultural identities
and media flows. He has been studying the impact of media flows on the
transformation of Muslim Hausa popular culture especially in literature, film,
music and performing arts. He is also an ethnomusicologist and creator of the
Foundation for Hausa Performing Arts (Kano, Nigeria) whose main focus is
archiving traditional performing arts heritage of the Muslim Hausa.
His
most recent book is Passage from India:
Transnational Media Flows and African Cinema: The Video Film in Northern
Nigeria (Ohio University Press, US, forthcoming). His other recent
publications include Transgressing
Boundaries: Reinterpretation of Nollywood Films in Muslim Northern Nigeria
(ed. Matthias Krings and Onookome Okome, 2013, Indiana UP), Transnational Media Flows and Contra-Flows:
Shifting Paradigms in South-South Entertainment Flows (Hemispheres, Polish
Academy of Science, 2012), Motionless
Points in Chaos: Education Reforms, Innovations and the Challenges for Higher
Education in Nigeria (University of Hiroshima, 2011), Developing Institutional Co-operation Strategies: The Rhetoric and
Reality of Academic Linkages with Nigerian Higher Education (Avrasya
Etudleri, Eurasian Studies, Turkey, 2011).
In
September 2006 he delivered the distinguished Mary Kingsley Zochonis lecture
for the African Studies Association, UK
Biennial Conference, School of African and Oriental Studies, University of
London. Titled,
Transglobal
Media Flows and African Popular Culture: Revolution and Reaction In Muslim
Hausa Popular Culture,
the lecture was later published in an expanded form by Visually Ethnographic
Press in 2007 in Kano, northern Nigeria.
Prior
to his expanding his research focus to Mass Communications in 1999, Prof. Adamu
has extensively contributed to debates about Science Education in Nigeria. His
first book, Operation, efficiency and desirability of special science
schools at the secondary education level: The Nigerian experience (1992) was an ethnographic exploration of the role of science
education in national manpower development. It was published by the International
Institute for Educational Planning, Unesco Paris. His second book was Reform and
Adaptation in Nigerian University Curricula, 1960-1992: Living on a Credit Line (1994) on education was on the transnationalism of Nigerian
educational heritage, and presented the most detailed history of the course
unit system in Nigeria and its transportation from the United States. It was
written during his tenure as Fulbright African Senior Research Scholar—the
first from northern Nigeria—at the Center for Studies in Higher
Education, University of California, Berkeley between 1991 to 1992. It was
published by The Edwin Mellen Press, New York and considered one of the most
important 100 books on Nigerian education. In 1993 he was granted a Rockefeller
Foundation Fellowship residency at the Bellagio Center, Lake Como, Italy where
he developed a monograph on the transformation of Bayero University Kano,
Nigeria. As usual with Prof. Adamu, he was the first from northern Nigeria to
be granted such international recognition.
Prof.
Adamu has also contributed immensely in the area of Information and
Communication Technologies. In 1996 he created Hausa hooked character fonts
using True type technology. These fonts—called rabiat.ttf and
drabdalla.ttf—enabled effective writing in Hausa language using Truetype
fonts, and obviated the immediate need for a dedicated Hausa language word
processor. He also helped to establish numerous website that focus on culture
and identity of the Muslim Hausa peoples in northern Nigeria, especially KanoOnline.com,
Dandali.com, as well as numerous
communities at Yahoo! Groups which provided thousands of people with
opportunities to interact and share ideas on policy, politics, music,
literature and film culture of northern Nigeria.
