Vision 2020 Under Threat -Senator
By Adetutu Folasade-Koyi, Snr Correspondent, Abuja

Prospects of Nigeria attaining Vision 2020 goals of the President Umaru Yar'Adua administration may be under threat following the falling standard of education, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Education, Joy Emodi, warned on Tuesday.

Emodi gave the warning at a press briefing to herald the forthcoming education summit.

Flanked by another member of the committee, Kaka Mallam Yale, Emodi announced that former Head of Interim National Government, Ernest Shonekan, would chair the Education Summit scheduled to hold next month.

The summit, said Emodi, is aimed at articulating a legislative response to the falling standard of education.

"The present UNESCO report showed that Nigeria came 18th to the last among the nations not likely to achieve that goal; meanwhile we have another goal to be one of the largest 20 economies.

"If we don't achieve education for all, how are we going to be one of the major 20 economies in year 2020? It is not possible. Apart from that, the yardstick for measuring development is nothing but education, especially quality education."
