Title: What is Telnet?
Post by: Baruti M. Kamau on January 10, 2004, 07:54:34 AM
Telnet is a protocol for remote computing on the Internet. It allows a computer to act as a remote terminal on another machine, anywhere on the Internet. This means that when you telnet to a particular host and port, the remote computer (which must have a telnet server) accepts input directly from your computer (which must have a telnet client) and output for your session is directed to your screen. There are many library and information resources that are accessible through telnet.

Yes, as Mr Baruti has said, telnet allows you to remotely emulate a machine. To be specific, telnet is a protocol standing for Terminal Emulation. The 2 most common telnet softwares are HyperTerminal and Telnet in windows. This feature emulates another machne using the TCP/IP protocol suit as the means of connection.

Telnet was one of the first protocols to be developed during the early stages of the ARPANET that later became the Internet. telnet allows you to login to another Internet location to gain access to databases, library catalogs, and interactive environments.

For those od us that are familiar with the Open Systems Interconnect layers (OSI), telnet works at the session to application layers (5-7). Is also used for hacking!

I'm sure u can find more info on telnet on the internet. Feel free to ask for more info pls.

The answer to your first question is yes.

A good telnet client can be downloaded from http://ozone.eesc.com

If you are interested in making the content on your computer accessible to the Internet you'll need the UFO DynDNS updater.  The DynDNS updater will give you the IP Address of your computer.  Then you'll need a domain name which point to your IP Address.  That way whenever you connect to the Internet, netizens will have access to the local content you're providing.  ka gani ko.
