All praise is due to Allah, Subhanahu wa ta`ala, the Sustainer of the worlds. I pray that His peace and blessings descend upon the Most Noble of all the Messengers of Allah, Muhammad Bin Abdullah, sallallahu 'Alaihi wa salam, his family and companions.
WHAT IS RAMADAN?
Ramadan is derived from the Arabic root word ramida or ar-ramad denoting intense scorching heat and dryness, especially the ground. From the same root there is ramdaa, sunbaked sand, and the famous proverb: "Kal Mustajeer minar Ramadaa binnar" - to jump out of the frying pan into the fire. And in a hadith the Messenger of Allah (saas) said: "The prayer of repenters is due when the young camel can feel the sun's heat early in the morning." (Muslim)

Thus, the word Ramadan is so called to indicate the heating sensation in the stomach as a result of thirst). Others said it is so called because Ramadan scorches out the sins with good deeds, as the sun burns the ground. Some said it is so called because the hearts and souls are more readily receptive to the admonition and remembrance of Allah during Ramadan, as the sand and stones are receptive to the sun's heat. The framers of this beautiful language may have been inspired by Allah (SWT) in naming this month Ramadan. Otherwise, the relation between the heat and its properties is miraculously similar to that of Ramadan. While the heat represents the matter that helps shape, form, and mold virtually every matter - from metal and plastics, to plants and living cells - Ramadan undoubtedly helps a serious believer remold, reshape, reform, and renew his physical and spiritual disposition and behavior

Whenever the orbit turns and another month of Ramadan approaches, happiness and joy return to the Ummah, for with it come two of the greatest gifts of Allah, namely the fasting month of Ramadan and the celebration of the revelation of Al Qur'an

Fasting is an eloquent expression of Allah, leading this Ummah to the gates of His mercy, a key to unlocking the mysteries of His nearness. While humanity is divided on the basic elements of the notion of the Creator, a Muslim is far ahead of the rest of the world in this field and travelling at the speed of light to the neighborhood of the Throne of the Creator. Where else would you find a discipline that provides direct communication between the servant the Served? Where else would you have an act of 'Ebadah that enriches self-worth, self-strength, self-rebuilding, self discipline and control? Where else would one find a discipline that moves the believer from unauthentic to authentic as the institution of fasting? Where else would you find a discipline that enriches the vital needs of human being, both physical and spiritual? Praise be to Allah!

The institution of Fasting is a unique form of worship prescribed as part of an overall system of Islam. Its uniqueness mirrors the uniqueness of the human being, a creature of physical and spiritual parts whose excellence depends on the right proportion of these two parts. Too much of the physical material will ruin man, and too much of the spiritual will, too. Fasting orients the observer to the art of balancing the spiritual essentials with physical needs, a vivid proof that there is in all of us the will power, a pivotal element that controls our actions. This will be needed to help us curb the animalistic tendencies originating from the stomach, in full. It makes us forget about our beginning, it awakens the mind and kindles clear thinking and consciousness of Allah. Fasting is the sobering of a mind and reconstruction of our spiritual faculties.

Fasting has instilled in food and beverages a religious legitimacy, as its amount and the hour taken are expressed in terms of deen, and chewing and sipping at proper intervals equals praise and glorification of Allah. It makes the individual ready and primed to meet the Creator. You see, it has never been easy trying to gain access to the nearness of Allah, SWT, due to several considerable obstacles obstructing our view, mainly ignorance, multiple images or double vision, passive will power, time, place, culture, upbringing and prejudice. Fortunately, the gates that lead to the nearness of Allah swing both ways with the help of fasting.

Fasting cures the double vision that many people suffer in the realm of spirituality. The inauguration of Fasting eliminates the middleman, a spiritual broker, an insidious opinion held by some that a believer can only gain access to nearness to Allah through another, who is endowed with superpowers to reach Allah more easily. No, indeed, Allah is ineffable yet approachable. It is the sum and scope of Allah's 'Ebadah that clarifies all the acts of 'Ebadah including Salat. Fasting renders this magnificent and beautiful idea of Tawhid of Allah, there being no deity but Allah, and Muhammad being His Messenger, into an effective power charge, a potent and effective concept for focusing and organizing one's world view and epitomizing the religious and psychological orientation of the believer.

On the other hand, Ramadan was the host month for the inauguration of the final revelation, Al-Qur`an Al-`Azeem. Allah (SWT) bestowed this book upon humanity through His Messenger Muhammad bin `Abdullah. The reading of Al-Qur`an has been mandated by its Author, Allah himself, for the believers all the time, more so in the month of Ramadan, as this is reported from the Messenger. Muslims past and present have always mixed fasting with reading of Al-Qur`an. Perhaps the reason for this is that one of the objectives of Ibis (shaytan) is to hinder the believer from reading Al-Qur`an. But during Ramadan Shaytan himself is hindered from tempting the believer- for Al-Qur`an avails the reader a cherished privilege of directly conversing with the Creator of the Universe.

Islam is built on five pillars. Each represents a unique utility, an institution, if you will, through which the believer builds his relationship with the Creator and the creation. Of all the pillars of Islam, none is more special than siyaam, fasting. While there may be an appearance of Riya, eye service, or show, in all other pillars - Salaat, Zakaat, Hajj, and even the Kalimah - there is no such possibility in fasting. The only One who knows that you are really abstaining is Allah, the Almighty. It is easy to pretend to be fasting; while in hiding, you may eat or drink. Thus, fasting is considered a special worship, as Hadith reports from the Messenger of Allah (saas) have detailed.

It has been reported by the way of Abu Hurairah (raa) that the Prophet (saas) reported that Allah (SWT) said in a Hadith Al-Qudsi: "All services of the son of Adam are for him except fasting. It is for Me, and I will reward him for it. Fasting is a shield. On the day you fast, do not use obscenity, nor yell at others, nor act ignorantly towards them. However, if anyone abuses you verbally or attempts to draw you to fight with him, say 'I am fasting' two times. The Prophet (saas) then states: I swore by the One (Allah) in Whose Hand is the soul of Muhammad, the breath of the faster is sweeter to Allah on the Day of Judgment than the scent of musk. The faster experiences enjoyment twice: he is pleased when he breaks his fast, and he is pleased when he meets his Maker" (Muslim)

Among the points this incisive hadith revealed is that fasting is Allah's. Certainly, there is only one reason why a believer will put himself or herself through this trying physical exercise that - to seek the pleasure of Allah (SWT). The fast is the single most important device to test the Iman, faith, of the believer and the depth of his sincerity and commitment to the concept of Tauheed, the Oneness of Allah.

The hadith also states that fasting is a shield, an armor protecting the believer from sinful acts (ma'asi). Do you not know that nourishment is the first culprit in the propagation of sins? For when you eat, the blood flow increases considerably, and the energy level increases, making it easier for Satan to use your own energy level to tempt you to commit sins. In another hadith, the Prophet states: "Satan runs in the circulatory system of the son of Adam in the same way blood circulates in our system; so tighten his passages with hunger." (Bukhari/Muslim)

Now you see why fasting becomes a shield. Fasting enables the believer to guard against his archenemy. It also helps him against human evil by putting the patience and perseverance gained from fasting into use with forbearance and forgiveness of the attacker - that is, of course, when the safety of ones life is not involved. Otherwise, in this case, Al-Qur'an allows the believer to repel evil without transgression

Assalamu alaikum,
The following story is mentioned in Surah Qalam, Chapter 68 of the Holy
Quran.

Once there was a wealthy and pious man.  He had a big garden full of
green trees laden with fruits.  After the fruits were picked, this
rightful man used to distribute some fruits among the poor who would gather
at the garden every season to take their share.

Allah liked this act of the man.  By the grace of Allah the garden used
to give rich harvest every season.  Truly, one who spends for the sake
of Allah gets the reward in the hereafter as well as in this life.

This man had many sons who were not so pious as him.  When their father
died, they discussed a plan and said to each other that their father
was not a wise man.  He did not know how it was difficult to earn
livelihood.  They did not like the habit of distributing some of the fruits
among the poor. They felt as if all their efforts would go to vain if the
poor had some share.

One of the sons had a concern. What will they tell the poor people when
they gather to take their fruits next time? They thought over its
implications, as they were worried about losing their prestige. However,
they were not afraid of Allah's wrath. One of them suggested removing all
the fruits in the night and thus clearing the garden before dawn so
that nobody could come and ask for his share.  Everyone agreed to this
suggestion. Since they were not even afraid of Allah, they forgot to say
'Insha-Allah', which means if Allah Wills, "...they swore to pluck the
fruits of the (garden) in the morning, without saying Insha-Allah ('if
Allah Wills')" (Verses 17-18). If a Muslim does not say Insha-Allah before
doing something Allah may not fulfill his wish. But those who have no
faith in Allah fail to remember this and get stuck up in their act.

Allah is all Powerful.  He knows no bounds in His Governance.  All the
brothers went to sleep with a view to getting up early in the morning
and gather the ripe fruits.  In the meantime, with the Will of Allah
"...there passed by on the (garden) a visitation (fire) from your Lord at
night and burnt it while they were asleep." (Verse 19)

In the early morning, all of them got up and hurried up and "...called
out one to another as soon as the morning broke, Saying: 'Go to your
tilth in the morning, if you would pluck the fruits.' So they departed,
conversing in secret low tones (saying), No Miskin (poor man) shall enter
upon you into it today." (Verses 21-24)

As they were proceeding towards the garden, they were quite unaware
that Allah had willed otherwise.  Because the garden had become "black by
the morning, like a pitch dark night (in complete ruins)" (Verse 20).
So when they reached the garden, they said this was not their garden,
and that they had strayed away from the right path to the garden.  But
when they saw there was no other way around, they were wonder struck!
Soon they realized the situation and yelled: "Verily, we have gone
astray," "Nay! Indeed we are deprived of (the fruits)!"  The best among them
said: "Did I not say to you 'Why not glorify (Allah)'?" (Verses 26-28).
He had been advising them earlier against this act, for he had said it
is only Allah who would enhance their fruits if they continued to give
away some of them in charity.

All of them felt regretful over their misdeed. They turned, to one
another, in reproach and said:  "Glory to our Lord!  Verily we have been
doing wrong. Alas for us!  We have indeed transgressed!"  All of them,
then, sought Allah's pardon and said: "We hope that our Lord will give us
in exchange a better (garden) than this. Truly, we turn to our Lord
(wishing for good that He may forgive our sins, and reward us in the
Hereafter)."  (Verses 31-32)

It is very beloved to Allah that we share with the less fortunate
whatever we have. While some of us only feel hungry during the month of
Ramadan, there are many who are hungry everyday. Let us be more generous
with our wealth and help all those who are in need. We will not lose
anything by giving away some of our wealth, we will only gain.
In the Affairs of People Fear Allah (SWT). In the Matters Relating to Allah (SWT) Do not be Afraid of Anybody. Ibn Katthab (RA).

Ramadhan Mubarak

The Sermon Given By The Prophet (s) On The Last Friday Of Sha'ban On The Reception Of The Month of Ramadhan O People!
Indeed ahead of you is the blessed month of Allah.
A month of blessing, mercy and forgiveness.
A month which with Allah is the best of months.
Its days, the best of days, its nights,
the best of nights, and its hours, the best of hours.

It is the month which invites you to be the guests of Allah
and invites you to be one of those near to Him.

Each breath you take glorifies him;
your sleep is worship,
your deeds are accepted
and your supplications are answered.

So, ask Allah, your Lord;
to give you a sound body
and an enlightened heart
so you may be able to fast and recite his book,
for only he is unhappy who is devoid
of Allah's forgiveness during this great month.

Remember the hunger and thirst of the day of Qiyamah (Judgement)
with your hunger and thirst;
give alms to the needy and poor,
honor your old,
show kindness to the young ones,
maintain relations with your blood relations;
guard your tongues,
close your eyes to that which is not permissible for your sight,
close your ears to that which is forbidden to hear,
show compassion to the orphans of people
so compassion may be shown to your orphans.

Repent to Allah for your sins
and raise your hands in dua during these times,
for they are the best of times and
Allah looks towards his creatures with kindness,
replying to them during the hours
and granting their needs if he is asked...
O People! Indeed your souls are
dependant on your deeds, free it with Istighfar (repentance)
lighten its loads by long prostrations;
and know that Allah swears by his might:
That there is no punishment for the one who
prays and prostrates and he shall have no fear of the fire on the
day when man stands before the Lord of the worlds.

O People! One who gives Iftaar to a
fasting person during this month will be like one who has freed
someone and his past sins will be forgiven.

Some of the people who were there then asked
the Prophet (s): "Not all of us are able to
invite those who are fasting?"

The Prophet (s) replied: "Allah gives
this reward even if the Iftaar (meal) is a drink of water."

One who has good morals (Akhlaq)
during this month will be able to pass the
?Siraat?...on the day that feet will slip...

One who covers the faults of others
will benefit in that Allah will curb
His anger on the day of Judgement...

As for one who honors an orphan;
Allah will honor him on the day of judgement,

And for the one who spreads his kindness,
Allah will spread His mercy over him on the day of Judgement.

As for the one who cuts the ties of relation;
Allah will cut His mercy from him...

Who so ever performs a recommended prayer in this month
Allah will keep the fire of Hell away from him...

Whoever performs an obligator prayer
Allah will reward him with seventy prayers [worth] in this month.

And who so ever prays a lot during this month
will have his load lightened on the day of measure.

He who recites one verse of the holy Quran
will be given the rewards of reciting the whole Qur?an during other months.

O People!
Indeed during this month
the doors of heaven are open,
therefore ask Allah not to close them for you;
The doors of hell are closed,
so ask Allah to keep them closed for you.
During this month Shaytan (Saten) is imprisoned
so ask your Lord not to let him have power over you

The Messenger of Allah said, 'Fasting is a shield (or a screen or a shelter). So, the person observing fasting should avoid sexual relation with his wife and should not behave foolishly and impudently, and if somebody fights with him or abuses him, he should tell him twice, 'I am fasting.'

The Messenger of Allah said, 'Whoever fasts a day in the path of Allah, Allah will keep his face at a distance of seventy years from the fire (of Jahannum).'

He also said, 'The sleep of a fasting person is regarded as an act of ibaadah (worship), his remaining silent is regarded as a tasbeeh (glorification), the reward for his good deeds is multiplied, his duas (prayers) are accepted, and his sins are forgiven.'

SAWM in the month of Ramadhan is a duty on the Muslim, a Muslim fulfills this duty without fuss. It's a commandment from Allah and the Muslim carries it out to the best of his ability.

Besides the promised reward of Paradise, there are many earthly benefits for the fasting Muslim, some of which are:

Sawm makes the Muslim more humane as the fasting Muslim gets a first hand knowledge of hunger and thirst, which naturally sensitizes one to the pain of the less fortunate.

Sawm teaches self-restraint and empowers the Muslim to control his passions. When the emotions say, 'Time for chocolate...' the fasting Muslim says, 'Sorry, I'm fasting. I promised Allah.'

Sawm is body-friendly. For eleven months of the year our body machine is at work, day in day out, swallowing food, grinding food, digesting food, burning it, rejecting it, and so on. By fasting the whole day, the Muslim closes shop and our body machine is given a rest. Teeth go on vacation. Gums and jaws take a leave from all the chewing. The stomach goes on holiday, too and the gullet and the intestines get a break from the food traffic.

Sawm is an enemy of bad habits, drug abuse, smoking, alcohol addiction?for those who indulge in these, this is the time to quit. When one has fasted for thiry days from all these harmful stuff, one gains self-control and a sense of 'I can do it!'

Sawm reduces body weight. Even after concluding the fast for the day with the iftar (Iftar is the breakfast food at sunset)  the Muslim is required to be moderate in his food intake, following the prophet's tradition, 'The worst place one can fill is the stomach

Gifts to those who fast..................

Shaykh `Aa'id Abdullah al-Qarnee

Thirty Lessons for those who Fast

At this stage I can not find a better gift or greater masterpiece than to present to those who fast gifts from the Prophet of guidance sallallahu `alaihi wa sallam. They are those practical hadiths that have been mentioned in connection with rewards and blessings. Behold! They are the hadiths that lead to the doors of happiness and the paths of goodness in this world and the Hereafter.

0 you who fast! Record these hadiths and implement them: The Prophet sallallahu `alaihi wa sallam said: 'Whoever says at daybreak:

"There is no God save Allah alone, He has no partner, to Him belongs the dominion and the praise and He has power over all things"; such a person will have the equivalent of a slave from the son of Ismail; ten good deeds will be written for him, ten misdeeds will be erased, and he will be elevated ten levels. He will be protected from Satan until evening, and if he says it in the evening, he would have the same rewards until morning' (Ahmad, Abu Daud, Ibn Majah - sahih).

The Prophet sallallahu `alaihi wa sallam also said: 'Whoever says in the morning or in the evening: "O Allah! You are my Lord. There is no God beside You. You created me and I am Your slave and I have taken a covenant to You and promised You what I am able to do. I seek refuge with You from the evil of what I have done, I acknowledge Your favour upon me and I acknowledge my sin. Forgive me because none forgives sins except You." If a servant died during the day or night after having said this prayer, he will enter Paradise' (Ahmad, Abu Daud, Al Nisa'e, Ibn Majah, Ibn Hibban, Al Hakim - sahih; Al Bukhari transmits another version of this hadith).

Again the Prophet sallallahu `alaihi wa sallam said: 'Whoever says at morning or evening: "Glory and praise be Allah the Great" one hundred times, no one will come forward on the Day of Judgement with better than he; except if someone said the same as him and added to it' (Muslim, Ahmad, Abu Daud, Al Tirmidhi).

'Whoever said: "Glory and praise be to Allah the Great", a date tree will be planted for him in the Paradise' (Al Tirmidhi, Ibn Hibban, Al Hakim - sahih).

'Whoever says: "Glory and praise be to Allah" one hundred times in a single day his sins would be erased even if they were like the waves of the sea' (Bukhari and Muslim).

'Whoever implements ten verses of the Quran will not be included among the negligent. Whoever implements one hundred verses will be considered among the obedient. And, whoever implements one thousand verses will be among he extremely rich' (Abu Daud, Ibn Hibban - sahih).

'Whoever says in the evening: "In the name of Allah with whose name there can be no harm in the earth or in the heavens and He is the Hearer the Knower" three times, he will not be afflicted with a sudden calamity before morning. And whoever says it in the morning three times will not be afflicted with a sudden calamity before evening' (Abu Daud, Ibn Hibban, Al Hakim - sahih).

'Whoever says: "I seek refuge with the perfect words of Allah from the evil that He created" three times in the evening will not be harmed by the bite of a serpent during that night' (Al Tirmidhi, Ibn Hibban, Al Hakim - sahih).

'Whoever says upon leaving his house: "In the name of Allah, I trust in Allah, there is no movement and no power except with Allah", it would be said to him: "You have been contented and you took precaution", Satan will turn away from him' (Al Tirmidhi, Abu Daud, Ibn Hibban, Ibn al Sunni - sahih).

'Whoever says when he hears the caller to prayer: "And I bear witness that there is no God save Allah, He is alone and has no partner and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and messenger. I am pleased with Allah as Lord, Muhammad as Prophet and Islam as religion" all his sins will be forgiven' (Muslim and the other five).

'Whoever recites the Surah al Ikhlas ten times, Allah will build for him a house in the Paradise' (Ahmad - sahih).

'Whoever recites the Surah al Kahf on a Friday, a light will be created for him until the next Friday' (Al Hakim and Al Bayhaqi - sahih).

'Whoever recites the verse of the throne after every compulsory prayer will not be forbidden entrance to Paradise' (Ibn Hibban and Al Nisa'e - sahih).

'Whoever recites Surah al Ikhlas it is as if he read one-third of the Quran' (Ahmad, Al Nisa'e, Al Tirmidhi - sahih).

This bouquet from Muhammad sallallahu `alaihi wa sallam we grant to all those who fast.

O Allah! Help us to remember You, thank You and worship You in the
best way. Amen.
