As-salam alaikum,
The federal government has just given approval for the setting up of more private universities across the country.. they are ..

Ogbong University, Akwa Ibom State;
Caleb University, Ikosi, Lagos State;
Fountain University, Osogbo, Osun State;
Tansian University, Umunya, Anambra State;
Veritas University in the Federal Capital Territory,
Wesley University of Science and Technology, Ondo State.
Western University, Oghara, Delta State.

Ikon Allah.. all these Universities are in the south ... closest to the north is FCT, haba jama'a..!!!!...

Jama'a I am deeply saddened.... despite the fact that we are the most educationally handicapped part of the country, and our rather dis-organised private sector is virtually small and medium scale, we dont seem to be making any efforts to fix these....Jama'a where are we?. How do we sort out our very many problems?.... Ina Arewa? ... What future lies for us?.. Do we keep waiting for a Sardauna type leader?...What do we do?....

Allah ya taimake mu....

Thank you Malam Sheriff for this very useful information.
The only comment i will make is mu dai Allah ya isa.
Duk wanda Allah yabashi dukiya wanda zai iya taimakawa

Are we talking about University alone?
mutanen da ko Islamiyar unguwa basu iya taimakawa
balle ayi maganar karatun boko.

They did rather spend 1 billion trying to fine tune
their businesses than to spend 1 naira for the sake
of their community.

We have them spread all over the north.  To start with
let me mention a few who i knew their community never
benefited from their billions of naira.

Alhaji Mai Deribe - throughout his life time, he has been
busy doing contract all over the nation, drilling boreholes
and constructions since before independence.  He has
acquired what you may call real money.  Did you know?
He died just like that, his community didnt felt his death,
because they got nothing to loose.  During the late 70s and
early 80s, this man buried over 100m USD just to build a
house (not hotel please).  Some of you might have seen
the house on tv or ovation.  This house is now a museum.
WWWWWWWWWWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSTTTTTTTTTTTTEEEEEEEEEEEEE
With no apology to his heirs if any is reading this post.

What about the Muhammadu Indimis, inlaws to the Babangidas who
have been enjoying patronage from the Federal Government (Oil Sheikh).
What has he done to his community?
I heard that he has one Indimi Islamic Trust Foundation where Late
Sheikh Ja'afar (Radiyallahu Anhu) used to deliver Tafsir, but later
he Indimi withdrawn all his support to the foundation.

To mention but a few, they have no symphaty to their dear country,
they dont feel for their dear state or community.  They go to sleep in
a state of absolute fright - thinking that by the time they woke up
they did become poor.  "Asshaidan Ya idukumul fukra".

A'a? Slow down Dan Borno, Me yayi zafi haka? Pointing fingers at rich people,

cursing and praying for them a horrible death is not the way to deal with this

situation. Remember, they earned this money by theselves. Their primary

obligation is to provide for their families, it is only recommended (not compulsory)

for them to help the community.

Providing education is the job of the Government! Just because our government hasnt

provided the satisfactory education doesn't mean we should depend on private universities.

We are all entitled to sound education from the government, not the rich people in the society.

There are many ways to provide for your community and not just in terms of money. Every

individual should contribute in one way or the other. Before we go pointing our fingers at these

people, we should ask ourselves first "What have i done for my community? Am I active? Have I

lent a hand? Or have I just been nagging nagging & nagging all day?

So they choose to spend their money their way, it's their life. Freedom of choice. How wud you

feel if someone just showed up from nowhere and started dictating how to spend your money to

you? We cant hate them cos their rich (they cant help it).

Hmmm, Sheriff05, What's wrong with that? There are new universities

in the south, and so? Why is that a problem? We should be happy that

our country is developing! If education is handicapped i the north, why

not go to the south? If you feel the education is better there then go

for it. There is no quota preventing northerners from these unis, ko? After

all, Nigeria is Nigeria.

Personally, I feel we dont need new universities in the north. The ones we

have are enough. We should focus on perfecting and broadening the ones

we have now rather than opening new ones. Remember, a good university is

not determined by quantity, but quality in areas like research and discoveries.

It takes a university decades to achieve excellent standards. we have good

universities in the north that have been around for ages and have been providing

sound education. We dont need new ones.  :-\

Thank you Fateez for trying to put me in your line of thinking,
may be our understanding differs.
Yanda na fahimci abin is that "it is compulsory" for the rich
to cater for the poor, breaching the gap in Islam is very
fundamental.  That is why, a Muslim who doesnt give out
Zakat is termed as Kafir - how grievous is the sin?

Take a look back at history, before our Noble Prophet (SAW)
established an Islamic Government in Medina and Mecca
Abubakar, Usman etc (Radiyallahu Anhuma) played a vital role
with their own wealth forgeting about their immediate family.

I agree with you when you point out that their primary responsibility
is to cater for their immediate family, but the aya goes further to list
others who should be taken care of.

I am not jealous of any rich man, and i did not call names for the
sake of just calling names, but it is disheartning when you see the
affairs of your community ruining in the hands of few.

I dont know which class you belong to, but all have worked hard trying
to earn a living, it is the wish of Allah to enrich one person above the
other - but not his power or intelligence.
So, if a rich man decides to spend his money building Casinos, we should
just give a him a nod.  If rich people were to be left without guidance, then
certainly, there will come a period where the poor must vacate the earth
to another planet to live.  Allah bestowed on you the wealth to test you,
He also said we shouldnt be extravagant.

My point of argument in the beginning of this post is that all these private
universities built in our neighbouring regions are the work of its own people
trying to make their contribution towards uplifting their communities
(dont mind the profits they make - think of the benefits).

No matter how - a wealthy man is still a wealthy man
Zalika fadlullahi yu'atihi man yasha'u.
I am not saying that they should spend their whole earnings
to the poor, until they become poor themselves.  You knew it.

I beg to disagree with the above assertion.
The north you are talking about was not the north
20 years ago.  We need more universities than our
southern friends.

How many Universities do we have in the whole of the
north?

Compare the above answer with the number of young
secondary school leavers each year and see the result.

I hate to recount my difficult days at UNIMAID.

Thats why i said "perfecting and broadening" the unis we have

already. How about multipying the intakes? Increasing campus

sizes & campus numbers? Improving facilities? More courses? Is

it really necessary to have a whole new institution with a new

name?

that is why you are talking about broadening and
widening and improving facilities and more courses
and more numbers etc.

Firstly, Zakkah is compulsory, no doubts about that. But how do you know they

don't pay zakkat? Zato dai ba kyau. Maybe they dont go around boasting about

how they help others. During the time of Rasullulah (SAW), These people gave

their money willingly. It was their choice to give to the Ummah and may Allah bless

them for doing so. Lets not forget that Arewa is not just made up of Muslims, there

are non Muslim northerners. We cannot impose our beliefs on others.

I'm not saying you are jealous of them, but you sound as if it is by force that they

must help the community when deep down inside you know very well that this is the

job of the government. Just because we are not satisfied with the government doesnt

mean we shud attack the elite amongst us. Ina ruwan su? Don't you think you are

attacking the wrong people? They are entitled to infrastructure from the government,

just like you and me.

I just dont think it's right for you to point your fingers specifically at certain people

and tell them you wish for them to die in "Kunci" when they are not the major cause

of the problem. Alhaji Indimi rite? isn't dat da guy from OML? Well doesn't he do contracts

for NNPC? isn't NNPC a national body? He isn't even a politician! He hands the resources

you need over to your government to give to you. Why attack him?

Mai Deribe is dead, and now you're trying to imply that a large chunk of his legacy is a

waste? isnt that house if his contributing to the tourism industry in Borno?

Don't worry, I'm part of the masses and i'm a strong believer of community work.

Also, I thought the major essence of establishing private institutions was to provide

healthy competition with the government-run ones? This should serve as a wake up

call to our good universities to be improved

Fateez, I hate to disagree with you, but for once, I totally agree with Kam Bornoye. 90% of mega rich ppl in Nigeria got their wealth in an illegal way. So they cant spend it as they like, because it is not theirs to spend in the first place anyway. As for taimako, they must do so. This is something that Islam advocates as zakka, which is only 0.04% of their (illgotten) wealth, so when u think about it, the sum they have to spend is paltry, but because we are talking of billions of syphoned off money, that will translate to some useful milliions which wont make a dent in their pockets. Like Dan Borno said, wealth is a test from Allah so it is a trust to be used to help the less fortunate. It doesnt mean that one shouldnt live like a king, but at least make sure the neighbours and the lesser well off are in a position not to feel disgruntled by one's wealth.
As for universities, we need them.. plenty. The ones we have now have overflowed their capacity, that is why u find that unless u have long leg or a godfather, even the university education as lame as it is in Nigeria yana neman ya gagari dan talaka. Where 'yan kudu suka fimu is that at least their talaka almost demand that masu kudinsu do some philanthropic work for them, and believe me they do. A lot of them suna da kishin jinsun su.
