Kai Dan Barno, Menene kuma dumbula?
Kuma kaida hausar ta isa, why did you not translate it?
Ok, my Senior, let me try
Oxygen - Iska
Atmosphere - Sararin samaniya
Computer - Inji mai kwakwalwa
Please score me?
Thanks Dan barno!......... But i don't think Oxygen mean Iska...... Iska is Air and Sararin samaniya is sky not atmosphere, but i think you are right with computer translation.
I am lucky my second wife is coming from Kano, I will learn more when she comes, but before she comes please go ahead MYSELF and translate the rest.

:D Myself kenan, do you know the meaning of dambula, you remind me of my late grandmother, she usually used that expression whenever we disturb her.
Myself, you better get somebody to translate those things before I go to sleep tonight.
I really don't Dan barno, but now i think i got wat it mean.............. Shine kamar in yaro yayi laifi akan cemasa KACI DUMBULAR GIDANKU? ??? Hhm!!!
Actually i think that word DAMBULA has no meaning, ko?
I think the word DAMBULA or DAMBULLA most probably came from Kanuri , bare-bari, Bornu and as Myself (what a User name!) said it has to almost always to do with a very serious "Zagi". It is also often found in people's name around that area as in Kacella Dambulla...
This is just my opinion.
By the way, do you know that the people of Kazaure were originally Kanuri?
I dont even know how the explain that word, it is a part of a hand and only appear when you fold your hands ready for boxing! i dont know the name in English or any other language.
But certainly it is not a serious zagi as Sdanyanro asserts, it is a very mild one.
As for the people of Kazaure, i have heard of it once, but uptill now i havent laid my hand on any material, i would have love if you could furnish me with one, because there is a work going in in collaboration with our people (Kanuri) at Lafian Barebari.
So lets get back to business
Atmosphere?
Oxygen?
Dan barno it look like nobody want to translate those words.....Hhm! :-\
Maybe nobody knows the translation ???

The problem is that there is not a single word to translate it. Sinadarin kwayar iska is such a mouthful. Besides, ai oxygen is not the only sinadarin kwayar iska. There are other kwayoyin iska, like hydrogen, carbon dioxide and traces of some inert gases. U all find those in the iska. So that translation is strictly a genera one. Doesnt apply to oxygen alone.
Same with naura mai kwalkwalwa. laptops palmtops pda and anything with artificial intelligence can be termed naura mai kwakwalwa.

Yes they are all variations of the same thing...computer. But as u can see in English, they already each have a name with which each is recognized by. Can we think up of names to apply to each item that are short and not too descriptive like the 'naura mai kwalkwalwa which is three words to describe a single item?

Is cookies the currect translation for kuli kuli though?
And i also thought kohl is arabic not english.
yeah i think cookies is an approximate translation, you know there are some cookies that are deep fried just like kuli kuli
And you are right kohl is derived from Arabic just like soap, camel, admiral, magazine, assasin etc
so there u go or do u have better translation?
I don't have any better translation alkanawi....... but i think the english word for kohl is eye liner or mascara.
Kohl as a word is also used by the English. However, mascara strictly speaking is not kwalli, because it is applied on the lashes. Eyelining as a makeup is relatively new to the western world I think because if u look at the yrs before the 1980s, women hardly ever lined their eyes as part of their makeup routine. It was always the mascara. In the early 70s with the advent of glam rock (David Bowie, Marc Bolan, Kiss, Led Zeppelin), the glam stage make up included eyelining for the men. Then in the late 70s and early 80s, the new romantics (I think they were called) that is bands like Duran Duran, Adam and the Ants also applied eyeliners as part of their stage makeup, but they also had patches just like gentlemen used to wear in the 18th century (in those days, men powdered patched lipsticked and wigged themselves exactly as the women did). I think the trend for western women wearing eyeliner really took off in the eighties, I also think that is when the west discovered the word kohl for eyeliner since this culture was very widespread in the mideast countries and indian subcontinent. I find that when I mention kohl in indian grocery stores, they dont know it by that name, but if u say kajal they immediately know what u mean. So maybe kajal is urdu or indian in origin?
I always taught about this word - ASHANA, it doesnt sound like hausa neither does it sound like English or Arabic, can someone enlighten me please
Thanks Husnaa, Myself totally lost me with that maska..,mosc..., masak....,masara...stuff.Totally Greek to me ,not being of the fairer sex u see.

Lol Fateez, where u been?
Anyway u are right!! I have totally forgotten zanzaro was an insect. Lets see, isnt zanzaro the insect, cricket in english, no zanzaro is the praying mantis or dragon fly, (i think). crickets are the ones that disturb one throughout the night with their high pitched screeching. lol what are they called ma? I used to go into a hide and seek situation with them, cos they'd invade the bedroom and u'd look up and down for them and they'd keep absolutely still. Then when the light is off again or u'd gone back to bed, they'd start up again... they used to drive me crazy. Kai yaya sunan su ma a hausa?

Mazugal is a name of one of the Kano gates. It derived its name from an incident that happened at the gate. As MYSELF said is 'Karya'. A man came and met the gaurds at the gate and told them a big lie I think he was tryin to get in thats why he lied. so the guards laughed and shout Mazugal. U know lie is also refers to as Zuk'i, sometime children sing when sum1 lies singing 'zuk'i ta malle'

Quote from: IBB on May 09, 2007, 08:30:27 AM
who knows how the name (BUNDUGA/GUN) comes about
Hehe, I've heard this one before. A cousin studying languages spent
days trying to persuade me that the word "Bindiga" came from "Bring
the gun." Something about the British settlers in Nigeria asking the locals
that were about to attack them to "bring the gun." Dunno how true it is
tho. Oh, she also mentioned that Bayejidda came fromn "Ba ya ji da" (As
in "he didnt understand before"). Ba ya ji da to Bayejidda would make a
lot more sense than Bring the gun to Bindiga... ???
Kinsan kuwa Fateez yr cousin could just be right about how the word bindiga came about? It sounds very plausible, except for one thing, which even for that there could be an explanation. I say this because if you imagine a colonial 'massa' ;D standing extending his arm to a native and commanding 'bring the gun', every time he wants to use a gun, eventually the association with the object the gun itself and the phrase 'bring the gun' will establish itself to the point whereby bring the gun becomes a word to describe the object as far as the native is concerned especially if they are not versed in the white man's language but just get to form an association from constant repetition.
So as far as the native is concerned, its like the colonial just mentions the name of the object he desires at that time. Rather like a surgeon in an operating room who will just extend a palm and say 'scalpel' and the nurse will pass the scalpel to him. If u notice also, the phrase is 'bring the gun' not 'bring a gun', which shows that a particular gun is used at the time of the command being issued, so this gun must be one gun in constant use. So bring the gun eventually becomes bring di gun...bin di gun... bindiga, as the native tries to assimilate the words with his own tongue.
I think the most likeliest situation for this is not under a war situation. The likeliest scenario would be that the colonial master goes hunting, or goes off to an expedition for which he needs to protect himself against wild animals and the native as his servant carries the gun, as well as other paraphenalia. That is why when he wants the gun, the colonial master will say 'bring the gun' because it is a particular one and not just any gun.
PS Ever heard of Tal'udu in Kano? Its a just that area around the Sabon titi round about as u come out of kabuga. Tal'udu originally came about from the sign board of the construction engineers that I think built that road. They were an English company, called Taylor Woodrow, and I guess ppl identified the area by making the sign board a landmark and pronouncing it the best way they could when they wanted to give directions and eventually the name stuck as Tal'udu. Cool eh? ;D
Bayyajidda, kuma might be a corruption of baya gida (not at home?)

The Bindiga story sounds very real.
For those familiar with the military language you find a lot of these words e.g during a parade you frequently hear the soldiers shout 'PRED'(for chest out, actually means 'breath') then 'PRESHON'( 'attention').
Also when teaching soldiers how to assemble and operate guns you come across some word like:
'SAPLICA' meaning safety catch.
'TRIGAGA' meaning Trigger guard
So i believe bindiga really got its origin from 'bring the gun'....LOL

Quote from: IBB on August 21, 2007, 04:48:44 AM
can someone tell me pls. Jan-wuya is it derive from Red-neck
IBB are you asking for the drivation of the word or its meaning? Well, let me try my hand on it:
The adjective Jan-wuya has no relation with the direct combination of the words red & neck. It means something wholly negetive to this. It refers to kind of man/woman that is rascal, miscrent, adamant, or thug and other words related to these mentioned bafore.
Hope I am correct. Any marks for me?
Well dont you know if you are correct Muhsin? You should be very sure of something before writing it. I actually believed in what u wrote until u added that self doubt. In point of fact if we are to look at the word janwuya, its literal English translation is redneck. That is why I was impressed with what you'd written. I still think you are right, but cut out the self doubt. It makes ppl less sure of u also.
Thanx to you two. Husnaa you mentioned in 'literal English translation Jan-wuya is Redneck'. I thot Jan-wuya means some1 thats rascal or thug like Muhsin mentioned above. If its not wat does Jan-wuya mean.
Redneck, in modern usage, predominantly refers to a particular stereotype of people who may be found in many regions of the United States or Canada. Originally limited to the Appalachians and the American South, and later the Ozarks and Rocky Mountains, this stereotype is now widespread in other states and the Canadian provinces. The word can be used either as a pejorative (often as a racist epithet) or as a matter of pride. ;D ;D ;D
yes, Muhsin you've tried, however, let also chip in something
which in recent time have assumed the position of the word
janwuya or redneck in most of the states in Nigeria.
ko kun san mutanen Civil Defence Corps? that new corps
empowered by the then President of Nigeria, they are called
"Jan wuya" or "Red Neck", because the colour of their collar
is red, just an averaged man way of differentiation between
police and them.
Muhsins definitions still remains accepted and you score 75/100

"Jan wuya" may also mean the Don, the big boss or oga kwakwata.
It is related to the 'redneck' of the military. They only put on the red neck
from the rank of a colonel and above. Ko?
Hello,
Thanks to you all. And to Husnaa, what you said is a fact. Yet I must express my doubt knowing members like you are around. Though I know what I'd written is the metaphorical meaning of the word jan-wuya.
Any way, I won't do it again.

Wolf.. Yanyawa
Fox... Dila Kenan.
Fennec fox --- Yanyawa (it is also known as Baramba'da in Hausa)
Right IBB, now I see why someone translated it as fox
What is WOLF in hausa then?
Hmmn this ur questions nwah! Wolf i dont think it has a name in Hausa may be because it is not habitant of our region. I believe Hausa-man will call it "Karen-dawa" meaning wild-dog. There are many dog-like animals which dont have names in hausa but can only be refer to as dogs. e.g. Jackal, Coyote and even polar-bear. Imagine if there are no Hyenas in our region they will be refer to as 'Kare' too, instead of 'Kura'. Look at the two names I think there is similarity (kare, Kura). A male hyena is call "Kure" in hausa which is more similar to "Kare"
My bad Dila is Jackal

Can anyone help me translate kara to english
I thought of stick but that is Itace/sanda ko
Kara - is ICCE at the same time SANDA and they are all stick is just different names that are use in different statements. for instance HOUSE and HOME.
If you agree with me I will say KARA is a general name for stick. You know we have KARMAMI (corn stalk) thats like karan-dawa, karan-masara, karan-gero etcetara. You know icce can be tree; itace the plural of icce but icce is use where the stick is big e.g iccen-bishiya or reshe thats branch.
Sanda on the other hand i will say can be best translate as 'stick'.
The different names use for anything 'kara' is to diffirentiate the type of 'kara'. for instance if i point three different kara for you and ask you what are those, u will answer 'kara'. But if i point them out one by one you will tell me this is karmami, this is icce/itace i.e log/logs and thats sanda i.e sandan makaho (Blind man's stick). This is why I think KARA is a general name for any piece of tree (tsinken-tsintsiya, aswaki, bulala, alkalami e.t.c.).
Other example of 'kara' found in human body like - bone and some areas of the body where the flesh/tissue/muscle (where are the biologist? which word is it) is long or 'stick' out
Karan-hanci -- the bridge of the nose
Karan-mama -- teat
Karan-wutsiya -- Azzakari
from these examples I think Hausa regard things that are thin and long compared to the rest of the part as KARA
Quote from: IBB on November 07, 2007, 07:05:55 AM
instance if i point three different kara for you and ask you what are those, u will answer 'kara'.

Akwai wani abu da na lura da shi anan, shine that some ppl are apt to ask for the meaning of things that are ordinarily not known in Hausa for the simple reason that bamu da su physically. If one were to think about it, one would notice that in the evolution of languages, its only things indigenous to the region that have either singly indigenous names or collective indigenous names. If the object under query is not a native of the area and has never been imported (for example how could we ever have penguins in Hausa land?) then it is no use asking someone for its Hausa meaning because THERE IS NONE.
hold ur horses hajia husna, jst bcos they r not common doesnt mean there isnt a word for them even if it is borrowed from another language, which is d case with alot of hausa words. And if u notice most people tried answering d question n i believe we had fun with it, and we gained knowledge in the process.
so people pls dont be dicouraged, ask away, i wont mind knowing every single english or arabic word in hausa, like smone i know used to say "BE RICH IN YOUR CULTURE", we need to, if not for us then for our children.
Can some one also help me through a translation please.

Never mind, the horses are not moving an inch, but they will get frisky if kept too long in one spot.
Anyhow, I still stand by what I wrote. It is only logical if you stop and think a little deeper about what I said. You talk of uncommon words, I am talking about words for things that do not exist within the sphere or perimeter of the environment. So obviously, there wont be a name to describe them, because the things are not known there. But if you import a thing into a society then a name comes into existence for it obviously. The name is what ever the thing is called from where ever it came from. If the name proves difficult to pronounce, it is eventually modified to suit the tongue of the ppl who are adopting the thing and thus the name either changes completely or is bastardized. I am not denying that there are many words borrowed from other languages, but they are only borrowed because something came to the notice of the ppl borrowing the name/word, otherwise the ppl borrowing the name/word will have no use for it.
Oh BTW, when I wrote the previous post for which u sound so belligerent about, I wasnt thinking of what u wrote.. it just suddenly occurred to me what was happening. So no offence was meant OK? I have just read some of what u wrote earlier and realized that u might think I am targetting you. I wasnt. It was just an observation.....

A thought just occurred to me. one and half pence is half of three pence which is taro. so ahu might have evolved from the english word 'ahalf' = ahau = ahu.

Remote mean far/distance. Linzami I cant agree is remote, because is like a stearing-wheel and is not remote
Remote control means device for distance control. Linzami cannot fall under that.
I guess the concept hausa used to name 'eye' as 'IDO' should be applied to remote control. As eye interpreat image from remote place without touching it. therefore i will argue that remote control is 'Idon-na'ura'.
However one can argue against this given u can as well reduce volume.
Depending on ur responce i have some more arguement to come up with. might me too sophisticated because i believe the eyes have a sense of touch as well, but from distance

i want to know bambanci tsakanin daduro & shafani
Traditionally, Daduro is the act of cheating on your wife. In modern time, Daduro is the act of cheating on marriage partner. Before women are not know for this act, thats why the term only applies to the men.
The women the men have affairs with are know by every one to be prostitudes, thus the particular prostitute of one man is also called 'daduro' i.e (Daduron Dan-borno ce).
Shafani? If you can explain further i may know wat it means. Unless you are talking about 'yan mata that boys are smotching in their tinted cars all over the nation; in Uni car parks, bakin gate n so on.
Yanga is derived from the word "YOUNGER", only the
young ones make yanga.

Zalbe is a bird with very long neck. It mostly feeds on snakes. It is NOT a reptile.

Tsurku is more like munafunci. So its not curiosity per se. While Katsalanda means delving into other peoples' bussiness univited.
tsurku - jelousy, bakin ciki (black stomach)

What does "Magana Jari Ce" means in english. I know that the TV adaptation of the book translated it as "Wisdom is an asset". I just don't feel it is correct. Am I wrong?
You are not. I,am not feeling that translation too.
however those speech, talk (magana) are words of wisdom. So probably the traslation is right
IBB,
you see, this is a proverb, even in Hausa.
Therefore, to find a translation that may sound "right"
may be a little difficult.
The closest is "Wisdom is an Asset."
I may be wrong.
gaskiya nima i am subscribing to the
wisdom is an asset translation.

Who can translate this word "TAZUGE" into English language
Bashir, no english word for tazuge.
check mine.
english word for "GIZAKA"
TAZUGE - Belt din hausawa ;D
Lol Bakangizo, its the design of the trouser that is
called tazuge and the long rope that tied it around
like belt, its called LAWURJE.
LOL,DB gaskiya ka ji hausa!
Meye kuma gizaka?
E lallai DB yaji hausa ;D
So tell us, menene gizakan?
Interesting to learn that Tazuge is the trouser while lawurje is the rope.
In that case 'tazuge' is a trouser simple. (Because, all trousers have a belt loop)
Lawurje is a belt. Accoding to history of belt in wikipedia, it is highlighted that Skateboarders often wear shoelaces in belt loops to hold pants up instead of a conventional belt. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belt_(clothing). (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belt_(clothing).) 2010)
So if shoelace is considered as belt because it is use in the belt loop of a trouser, then Tazuge should also be consider trouser given it has a loop for lawurje/belt.

Hey guys, this one is to hausawa:
What is the differences between:
Mu gaggana
&
Mu tattauna
@DB, the difference depends upon (1) dialect and (2) intention. To some, due to dialectical variety, both the two expressions mean to discuss. While in another case, "Mu gana" means to meet; and does not necessarily refer to discussing at/during the meeting. "Mu tattauna" stands for to discuss. For e.g, we are doing tattaunawa here, but we aren't ganawa. And, one may say we are doing both. That's why I bring DIALECT into this.
'Zo mu gana' and 'Zo mu tattauna' are almost the same in hausa land. So one can translate it as 'Lets Meet'
Thank you my friends
