Something struck me subconsciously a long time ago but it wasnt until MYSELF put up a brand new avatar that the something crystallized in to cohesive thought. I hope that I manage to convey what I mean.
Because we only 'see' some of us online as avatars, those avatars have subconsciously become synonymous with the usernames of the ppl who display them, and there is a strong association between the username the avatar and the actual person in my mind. I also imagine that the persons closely resemble in features, the avatars displayed against their names.
Lets start with GGNK, because he is the one who formed the strongest association in my mind and at the same time he is the one who always surprises me. GGNK's avatar suggests to me a simple smiling quiet village lad.:P What surprises me no end is that when I read his posts a highly intelligent reflective and articulate person emerges who is in total contrast to the avatar, except that I still feel that he is a quiet person. That is the only commonality that is expressed between him and the avatar. The other thing is that every time I see a different person using the same avatar, I feel a sense of incongruity because of the strong link i formed between the username ggnk and the avatar.
Second in line is Ummita. When I look at her avatar, I am reminded of a girl I used to know. I think it is the pointed nose and the short spiky hair in the avatar. However Ummita is completely different from this other girl. Ummita sounds fierce from her posts, but she is a genuinely friendly person (I found that out on good authority, but I wont reveal my source).
The third is Fateez. Fateez's avatar. Funnily enough, I have never looked closely at Fateez's avatar. I used to see an innocent looking face of a young girl in patient contemplation. Then when I read her post, I feel this very kind hearted individual coming out of the posts, and yes I have associated her avatar with her username. Yet today I looked at the avatar closely and I find that Fateez is not there!!! :-\ Instead I see a sulky downcast looking female pouting. ??? Anyway, I have imbibed enough of Fateez's cyber spirit to know that this pic will not make any difference in the way I imagine her. Only that the association between the posts and the avatar will weaken.
MYSELF is next. MYSELF has two girls in her avatar. The avatar actually reminds me of two girls I used to know in BUK some years back. I have a feeling that it is a real pic of two girls that has been digitally sharpened to make it look like that. The avatar is still new so there is still no concrete attachment between post, name and avatar. But I keep wondering which one of the two girls I will eventually associate MYSELF with? Already the one in the foreground looks like a strong contender, because she looks more like a northerner than the girl on the left. ;)
There is Muda. the NBA league player. The player's bald head really makes a statement and I keep wondering if it is just a fashion statement or a genuine case of 'no mohair'! Somehow, I imagine Muda wearing a tazarce all the time. I think it is because the name Muda sounds like what the average dan birnin kano would call himself and I know that upper crust samarin Kano love to wear tazarce made from the most expensive shadda available, or they did anyway. ;D
The last is Dan Borno. Aristocracy to the bone!! Yet I am still to associate his avatar with the name and the posts. I think it is because I don't look at the avatar directly, I just have a sense of someone on horseback from the avatar. The pic does look like that of a bafaden sarautar Borno looking at it closely. I still haven't built a strong picture of Dan Borno. He is something of an enigma. He lets others make the statements, yet when he gets going, he is a surprise also. ;D
Other ppl with avatars are infrequent visitors to the forum so there is nothing to say there.

I kinda also link the font and font colors to the person.Like Fateez and her pink color,ummita and her blue,muda and his green.All help me in forming an image of the person.

Gaskiya nima I've been looking at Fateez's avatar for a long time and always thought that she might just look like that.I would love to see her real face.Also,whenever I see GGNK's I think of the same thing that Husnaa has said.Maybe he looks like that simpleton.

Lol, I am just voicing what a lot of ppl have been thinking of as per other members of the forum who have character avatars instead of object avatars like yours. Its difficult to formulate a personality based on an object.
The only thing I know about palms is what everyone else knows, that there is 1 and 8 are engraved on the right palm and 8 and 1 are engraved on the left palm. 18 and 81. Added together, they come to 99. If u add the 8 and 1 it comes to 9 and if u add the 1 and 8 it still comes to 9. Put ur palms together u get the number 9 and 9 on both palms. So still 99. Lol Admin!! None for ur avatar!!. I am only imagining the members throu their avatars. However as yr photo is right there by yr posts, one sees the real u and therefore associates ur picture with you. Like I said, your photo is so dominant that it overshadows ur avatar... (that is a local emir isnt it?) At any rate supposing u hadnt put up a photo of u and it was only the avatar, I'd say the association would be that of a presiding personality, which that avatar is really. Someone who looks after his little kingdom.... i.e this forum ;D. U know an avatar is a personality or a new friend. One has to get used to it to associate the posts with the avatar. So we'll get there eventually. Not having an avatar, well its like not having a personality.. that is the best I can think of. :) Sometimes when we choose avatars we are unconsciously trying to send a message to ppl of what we feel we are or would like to be. That is when u have ppl having really powerful avatars. On the other hand, ppl who choose simple avatars like GGNK for example are almost trying to hide who they really are. I really dont know about when it is an object like bakan gizo's who has a shield as an avatar.
I noticed that this girl (this amazon rather ;D.... )almost has the same facial bone structure as one of the other girls in yr last avatar.. the one that looked like a northerner. So maybe ur looks are similar to these girls in reality and that is why u choose them subconsciously. I am only guessing though...........

This is so true HUSNAA. When i chose my avatar a long loong looooong time ago i didn't have anything in mind. I was just like "oh da lady with a tagumi, that wud work". But now that you mentioned it, i think there's a lot going on with da avatar: A few possibilities:
- Deeply ~ Depression :: Now hold it right there! Don't start getting any ideas. I am so NOT depressed! (Not that there's anything wrong with depressed people). Da connection with this is part of what i do in life is helping people that suffer from depression, PTSD, Anxiety & Psychosis get back on their feet again. In other words, I put a smile on da faces of people that desperately need it. So in this case the avatar worked as a psychic vision cos when i chose it, i had no idea mental health issues wud be part of my life.
- Superficially ~ Vanity :: If you look closely, da lady in da picture might be holding something in her hand left hand. For all we know, it could be a piece of facial cotton wool. there could also be a bottle of Facial Cleanser on her other hand. Yeah, maybe she's just cleansing da make up off her face after a long day's work. she's closing her eyes in order to prevent da Aluminium Chlorohydrate contained in da cleanser from rendering her blind...
- The Artist :: HEhe, am I da only one dat noticed the letters "RKA" at da bottom left (on her arm)? Cud be da artist's initials. It wud be inbteresting to know what da artist was thinking b4 he/she made this picture. Part of our assessment was being given a picture painted by a mentally challengedindividual and we had to work out what disorder it was. Very interesting exercise. I'd see if i can scan then and put it up here 4 kanoonliners to see and guess a disorders...Fun Stuff...really.

lol should there be a relationship? ;D You asked me to put up an avatar, i did. This is something that i love. Infact my laptop and office desktop all have images of hurricane wallpapers. I just think hurricanes are beautiful and I love their symmetry. The one up there is Hurricane Mitch. I have a jpg of Huricane Wilma which I downloaded from the internet and used as a desktop wall paper. That one has the head of Wilma from the flintstones which I thought was humorous and cute and was initially going to use that as the avatar. I suppose that would have been considered more meaningful since there is a figure (a head to be precise) attached to it. I also have downloads of Hurricanes Isabel and Katrina. GGNK Muhsin's avatar is so predictable and boring and not him at all. It just says blah blah blah, if u know what I mean. Or maybe it shows how much in awe he is of professor Abdallah, or how much he is proud to be part of BUK. I have always felt that the emblem/logo was more associated with the Faculty of Edu than anything else. i think the originator of it was a member of that faculty? I am not sure.

I think u got me wrong. Why I said you are older than how the members think. I dont mean it in a bad way. When i was regular here i notice most of the members are young, so when i read some of your post i notice intelligence in your writting. We are trying to picture people here and state what we think thats why i said so, not that i have problem with your age. Secondly i know the kind of rubbish we write to each other because we dont know who we are talking to, we usually assume we of the same age (may be is only me that think that way). Changing my so called Forum name is no more or less on the changing of avatar by so many of the other forum members, including the acclaimed Hon. Speaker. My Username is still the same its just my forum name that i decided to change. This reminds me of something that happened some yrs back. I went to see someone's relative, cant remember what for, but we were very formal with each other, small chit chat, offers of lunch turned down, that kind of thing and all the time, me marking the moment to make a quick exit.
There was a visitor with her, and i wasnt participating in the discussion between them but I was listening. Her husband was a sort of uncle to me.. but many times far removed and if it werent for circumstances, i wouldnt have had him as an uncle anyway. God rest his soul, he'd been dead long before I'd acquired him as an uncle.
She was talking about his last moments on earth. She was happy that she'd been with him to the end. What made her even happier was the fact that he'd died pronouncing the Kalimatus shahadah on his lips. What sent shockwaves through me, though was that according to her, what he said was LA ILA HA and then passed away!
Up till today, I cannot forget this incident and whenever we meet at a public gathering, I just remember this tidbit she shared with us that day, and how proud she'd been to say it. I am not judging anyone or anything, I sincerely hope Allah Ya jikan sa da Rahma, but I also sincerely hope to God that when my time comes, I say the complete Kalimatus shahada without any breaks.

ur avatar is great ANAS, but it looks to me to smack of revolutionary tendencies. It reminds me of HAMAS and Fatah and PLO and probably all the rigingimu da suke faruwa a duniyar nan in the name of Islam. It is not the kalimatush shahada it self. Its the black flag that it was printed on and the morosely green background and the starkness of it all. Its a powerful message.

This reminds me of something that happened some yrs back. I went to see someone's relative, cant remember what for, but we were very formal with each other, small chit chat, offers of lunch turned down, that kind of thing and all the time, me marking the moment to make a quick exit.

Up till today, I cannot forget this incident and whenever we meet at a public gathering, I just remember this tidbit she shared with us that day, and how proud she'd been to say it. I am not judging anyone or anything, I sincerely hope Allah Ya jikan sa da Rahma, but I also sincerely hope to God that when my time comes, I say the complete Kalimatus shahada without any breaks.

OK OK. Here is why I like the picture.
I was testing my new camera and I was snapping pics left right and centre. So now there was 20/20 or 60 mins on TV, and this black dude was being interviewed and I heard that he was on death row. So that perked up my interest, then he said he'd killed some white ppl cold bloodedly because of some obscure reason or other and what's more, he doesnt regret it and vowed he'd do the same given the chance. So I decided to try my camera on him. So I snapped three pics of him and that particular one came out in an artistic way (that is if u could see the whole of the pic) The lower half of his face was shadowed while the eyes were highlighted and there was such intensity in them. I liked the pic so much, I kept it. Then the other day, I felt like changing my avatar. I remember MYSELF had asked me to. First of all, I was going to put up a pic of my own eyes, but I reckoned it wasnt a good idea, then I remembered this dude's photo and decided to up his whole face. Still that caused some comments. So I decided on his eyes only.
The photo is personal because I shot it. What is more, all the avatars that I have put up so far,except the very first one, I was the author of the photos, so there really should be no hoolabaloo over this one.
For those of you who are all for the old man, why? isnt he a man as well? Is it because he was an old man that he is acceptable while this one being young and personable he becomes objectionable? If there should be any incongruity or protest, it should be because I am putting up a pic of the opposite gender, not because he happens to be young and good looking to boot... ;D
