Title: The Truth About Red Meat!!!
Post by: Abbas Bubakar El-ta'alu on February 10, 2010, 10:12:03 AM
Some red meats are high in saturated fat, which raises blood cholesterol. High levels of low-density-lipoproteins (LDL), of which cholesterol is an example, increase the risk of heart disease.
In a study that followed more than 72,000 women for 18 years found that those who ate a Western-style diet high in red and processed meats, desserts, refined grains, and French fries had an increased risk of heart disease, cancer, and death from other causes.
A nutritional epidemiologist with the American Cancer Society, Marji McCullough, said: "The association between consumption of red and processed meats and cancer, particularly colorectal cancer, is very consistent.

Nutritional benefits from eating red meat

Red meat is high in iron, something many teenage girls and women in their childbearing years are lacking. The haem iron in red meat is easily absorbed by the body. Red meat also supplies vitamin B12, which helps make DNA and keeps nerve and red blood cells healthy, and zinc, which keeps the immune system working properly. Apart from these, red meat provides protein, which helps build bones and muscles.
A researcher, Shalene McNeil, said "Calorie for calorie, beef is one of the most nutrient-rich foods," "One 3-ounce serving of lean beef contributes only 180 calories, but you get 10 essential nutrients."

How much red meat should a person eat?

Opinions differ here, too. Most of the nutritionists suggest focusing on sensible portion sizes and lean red meat cuts, for those who choose to eat it.
A university professor of nutrition, Alice Lichtenstein, at the Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University recommends "Ask yourself these questions":
•   Are you taking in more calories than you're burning off?
•   Is red meat crowding out foods such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains?

All the same, people do not need to give up red meat, they only need to make better selections in the type of meat they eat and the portions.

Thank you. I have been hearing Doctors ordering some people to either cut down on red meat or stop it altogether. So I guess it is pretty harmful; at least taking it too much. Now, is beef (or naman shanu) the only source of red meat?

Mallam Bakan Gizo, the term 'red meat', is a relative terminology; meats from the cow, camel, sheep, and most lawfully allowed animals, with wild ones inclussive, are red meats.
The human blood is relatively basic, but red meat is acidic. Depending on an individual's physiological stance, the blood's pH can rise, which would lead to acidosis. This can prove fatal to the homeostatic condition of a person's internal environment.
It would be better for any person cooking the above meats, to first suck them in clean ordinary tap water overnight. Alot of the acid in them would enter into the water, thereby reducing the acid lots.
One thing that our people always think of is that, "People have, for centuries, been eating meat without the prior preparation I made mension above, who are you to change us?". Such people should please remember that, our fore-ones lived with almost no stress, no depression, they loved one another the more, were more hospitable, and the atmosheric air was 150% purer. Unlike now, when everything is polluted.
