Title: What Types of Books Are Nigerians looking For?
Post by: Anonymous on July 21, 2003, 06:37:38 PM
Assalamu Alaikum dear members of this great forum,

Kindly please help me answer this important question!

I recently heard over the radio that some authors in the country are lamenting over the non-marketability of their books and were looking for solutions to the problem.

In my opinion, the apparent poor book-buying culture of Nigerians is, among other things, a result of their poor reading culture and that may not be unconnected to the fact the authors are not writing the right stuffs that would fully satisfy the thirsts of our readers.

Now if this opinion is anything to go by, what then are the types of books that Nigerians are looking for? :)

I think you have answered the question, there is indeed a poor reading culture here in Nigeria even among the educated elite. This is of course more prominent in the North than in the South.
The economic situation that has lead to the decimation of the middle class is also another factor.
In my own observation, religious literature has the upper hand as far as the book buying culture of the avarage Nigerian is concerned.

I wouldnt totally say poor reading culture, even though you are absolutly right, however the way I see it & I sometimes question ppl who bring issues like urs up saying "how many books are being published by Nigerian authors"? Like I was helping my freind in a project and under her bibliograhy & reference pages, I saw about 6 books she made references of western authors but she only gave credits to only one Nigerian author. Now if you ask me, would I reasonable say theres poor reading or I might be  poor supply of books by Nigerians authors? :-/ How many of their books are being put up in Learning facilities or school libraries? There r many students & ppl who want to read perhaps they cant afford books, ok the library is available, but are there enough books for them to read? What do they read then? If you ask me, I have never come across ppl who are willing to read over 500pgs in a go like Nigerians (they love reading & craming the whole book up) so I dont think theres poor reading culture rather theres poor shortage of books published by Nigerian authors to be read by Nigerians & most especially students.

& finally u r highly welcome
