Title: Let the Igbos have the presidency in 2007!
Post by: alhaji_aminu on August 09, 2005, 03:59:26 AM
Salam

I have, for a long time now, being a believer in the northern-president-in- 2007 project. I am happy to note, however, that I have now recognised the problems with such a cause.

I am changing my views on account of the fact that Northerners have ruled Nigeria for about 75%  of its existence as an independent nation. The other reason is because there really isnt any meaningful difference between a Northern president and a southern one.

Left to me, I would say the Igbos rightfully deserve to be ceded the presidency. Let try to Imagine if the case was reversed- that is no northerner ever became president.
What will you think of that situation?

Ya alhaj! The only fear is that those people are unpredictable. They may decide to revisit Biafra. Or how do you see?

IGBO, YORUBA, HAUSA, TIV, AWUCHI, IGALA, FULANI,  KAI HAR JAPANEESE, SO LONG THEY HAVE CITIZENSHIP CAN RULE NIGERIA........SO LONG AS THERE IS JUSTICE IN THE WORLD I BELIEVE A MAN OF WORTH FROM ANY TRIBE COMPATIBLE ENOUGH COULD RULE  NIGERIA.

Hmm, hmm, prejudice!!!we preach one thing and want another done to some one else.  What makes Igbos unpredictable that does not make hausas unpredictable? as Hafsy has said Igbo, Yoruba etc so what? Don't we just want a better nigeria where we can live in peace, justice and abundance?  We say our faith makes us see all people as human and not different then why do we display thi kind of prejudice?  what is the difference between this type of prejudicial statement and racism?  If we make or believe in this type of prejudicial statement then it is clear that we are not fit to rule nigeria

The issue of presidency should be independent of tribe or race by now.I think there is a hadith not sure of its authenticity that said better a kafir that is just to be your leader that a muslim that is injust.
Also if people will research for a paper presented by Dr. Alex Ekwueme about the proposed constutution that was going to be enacted into law during the Abacha era.It had to do with a rotation of all executive offices between geo-political zones both in the federal and senatorial zones in the state level plus a one time only tenure at an executive post with a duration of five years.
Well after saying all this when you come down to it it doesnt really matter who is president,we need to de-centralise the center which will make it no longer attractive to be president and therfore make it into such a way that people easpecially the northerners to sit up and make a better place of their states/region.

 True talk!
I think power is too attractive as it is in Nigeria today, and i belive this
is one of the major reasons why there is all this fuss about which zone
  should have it.
Although and because a regional form of leadership is also not
a solution (as history has proven),i belive a form of hybid of the 2
methods (or even somthing entirely diffrent shld be adoptd) so as to
avoid a situation whereby power would be perceived to be in the in the
hands of one zone at any given time.

On the issue of Igbo presidency,i belive they have as much right as any
group of Nigerians to be given a go at leadeship.
As long as we get a just, honest, hardworking and capable candidate,it
doesn't really matter what zone or tribe the next president comes from.

Salam

I am yet to see one pragmatic justification on why the Igbo's don't deserve the presidency in 2007. Perhaps this is so because the Igbo's, and other marginalized tribes, DO deserve the post.

Many have said that a president should not be voted based on his ethnicity. This to me cannot be a justifiable position if a certain tribe (the Igbo) is excluded, not overtly, from becoming president in Nigeria. Many northerners fear that Igbos will break away if one of them attains the post.

But, what this actually tells us is that the Nigerian president has absolute and uncontestible power that people are fearsome of his 'hidden agenda". Under a "real" democracy the fear many have expressed, "without saying so", cannot materialize without the connivance of the national assembly. If people should fear anything, it should be the fear of sending inept representative who are incapable of protecting the interests of their constituents.

Again, I am saying Igbos need the presidency for almost exactly the same reasons Yorubas needed it. The confidence Nigerians will have on the Igbos will gave them all the more reason why they should invest more in the one-Nigeria project. It is very clear to all what happened to the ultra-tribalistic yoruba when/after OBJ became president.
For the first time in history, Yoruba mainstream is part of a party that is not regionally based.

Perhaps "same" could happen to the Igbos- never mind all S-E states are PDP states.

Interesting position aminu. You make many good points, and I must say they are right in the 'Nigeria' context. However I believe we must be aware that as long as we practice this kind of 'transitional democracy', things will get worse before they get better. While this 'rotational democracy' could help strengthen national identity, it will also be a lesson that competent (and incompetent) leadership is not the sole preserve of any one ethnicity.

Btw Nurrudeen, I think you should be ashamed of your post as well. Highly inflammatory and biased. I wonder what committee sat down and ensured beyond any reasonable doubt that IBB and Abacha were "honest, straight forward...unlike some people down sou..." Very objectionable post, quite a surprising outburst from you.

that is nonsense, Nobody is stopping the igbo to be president. If they want to be president , let them run 2007. I believe they should be no zoning. Let  people run based on thier merit, and not based on thier tribe.  if any igbo want to run for election let them go ahead. No one can hand over the presidency to anyone. Obasanjo is not president because yorubas voted for him. He is not running the yoruba term, he is running his term. Let people stop using tribe as a means of getting power, let bring it to the person.

*sign* so some ppl still hav dis idea dat comin from a specific tribe makes d best leader! (Lawd of merci) Brotha Aminut lets face d sun rise, in all honesty do we really judge d capabilities of a good president by his or her tribal roots?

Is Igbo not a tribe? Wud it myk it simple wen I simply say dat Ibgo as we all know is a term used in denotin groups of ppl sharin customs, language & territory? Personally, it is of no relative importance 2 me that a gud politician shud b defined by his or her tribal boundaries. D most important criteria 4 us 2 consider is wat will make a gud leader! We shudnt b enthocentric in a country comprisin of diff ethnic groups bt directly linked 2 one president.

Wat we shud luk 4 besyds our ever being stubborn and disagreeable leaders is an assertive, open 2 experience, achievement strivin, action taker, ideas & values implementer. One wit clarity of vision, direction & self-confidence. One who has respect 4 public opinion but not too responsive 2 polls, a party leader, who is eva ready 2 act & being comfortable in decision makin.  PERIOD!

I dnt hav a problem wit Hausas, Igbos, Yorubas, Fulanis nor any tribe becumin president in 07. 4 all I care a Rastafarian can rule our roost if he has d capabilities of holdin it straight!
Better worry 2 ponder on dey!

I think the point is clearly made. Just as there are enough bad people among the Hausa-Fulani their are also enough good people among the Igbo's. The issue is not with the tribe but the person. The race to Nigerian leadership has never at any moment in history been confined to any tribe in Nigeria. What is happening is akin to you may want to call survival of the fittest. There was no election that did not have an Igbo as one of the presidential aspirants. Please nobody ever stopped anybody from vying for the job of nigerian presidency. Amin do not fall into the propaganda. It has never been true please.

The issues with Igbos in the politics of Nigeria is tied to history. The role played by the first coup plotters; Nzegwu Kaduna and Emmanual Efajuana and other Igbo officers leading to the elimination of our founding fathers and also the subsequent kind of leadership by Ironsi, another Igbo has put them at a suspicious position. For northerners and people from the remaining part of the country who follow history will understand what I mean. With this if u add Ojukwu's seccesion and the civil war, u will see the reason why it is difficult for them to get a hold on the presidency. Don't forget that still we have MOSSOB and things like that.

Largely their previous actions is contributing to the problem of them not been able to have a shot at the presidency
