Angry women from Ikebiri in the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State on Sunday warned that they would go naked on the streets of Yenagoa, the state capital, if the government did not clean up the spill that had ravaged the community.

The nude protest threat came in the wake of recent devastation of Ikiama, another community in the oil rich state, where a spill nearly forced the town into extinction.

Leader and spokesperson for the women, Mrs. Ebitari Agbakabuwou, said the protest was to call attention to the damage done to the communities in the areas where the oil firm, Nigeria Agip Oil Company operated.

The state Deputy Governor, Mr. Peremobowei Ebebi, had last week, appealed to oil firms in the state to pay attention to the feelings of the communities around their areas of operation.

Ebebi had observed that oil firms operating in the state had an attitude of never meeting up with the memoranda of understanding they signed with their host communities.

This, he said, had often led to conflicts in many areas.

Agbakabwou, who said the women had no other option than to employ the traditional method of protest, said the spill in Ikebiri had destroyed the ecosystem and the traditional means of livelihood of the people which included fishing, farming and hunting.

She said the loss of these communal means of livelihood had led to poverty among women and hunger and starvation for children in the communities impacted by the spill.

"We will go naked in the state capital because we have been raped by oil spillage for the past 25 years. There was no oil spill site insepection report. The leakage points have not been clamped. Agip should immediately clean up the impacted area," she said.

The women noted that the oil firm working in the community had refused to renew the Memorandum of Understanding which had expired in 2003.

They said the indifference of the oil firm had led to the deaths of many people, particularly because of the lack of access to clean water in the community.

Sources told our correspondent that the spill was as a result of oil pipes that had not been changed for years.

this is a serious matter that requires urgent attention of the Ministry
of Niger Delta, GGNK tell Baba Go Slow to do something before our
mothers go naked which could bring catastrophe to this nation.

this shows the level of how life is in the Niger Delta, there leaders
dont have the fear of God despite the huge amount of money being
released to them by the Fed. Govt, Niger Delta Commission and
now the new ministry.  God held us.

How to stop women from protesting nude/How to take advantage of the situation .

-Open a camcorder and digital camera shop close to the event location. Sit down in the shop a watch wonder how fast ur goods will sell.

-Open a Bayelsa link in U-tube

What is the logic of this kind of protest? Is there any precedence where this kind of protest achieve it desired result?

Only Godiva was purported to have done it and for what reason, I dont know. The reason was lost in the notoriety she gained  ;D ;D ;D ;D and that was some hundreds of yrs ago when nudity in public was unheard of......

Oh PS, one or two ppl have done it in England with the police chasing them with a blanket to cover the all too important salient points and presumably protect their 'chastity' (!!) ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D....
Another woman inherited an unexpected 5 million pounds from an unexpected source and didnt know how to celebrate this unexpected windfall so she did the unexpected in a plane on her way to collect. She shed her togs and ran around in her birthday suit. The women of course were visibly upset, while the guys leered. There was a merry go round with the stewardesses but she was subdued in the end and when she explained why she did it, the unexpected happened.. she was cheered and applauded... Lol! The antiques of the white man.. ;D ;D ;D ;D

Dave dont say I'm being racist, cos I cant imagine a black person doing the same, except Naomi Campbell perhaps?

Well, all I can say is I hope they are all young and shapely and we get the photos on Kano Online.
Naomi Campbell is unfortunately getting a reputation for behaving more like Sonny Liston than like a famous model. Maybe her Scottish name has made her very aggressive!

What is going on up there? Just read the thread for the first time. LOL ;D
Let them try...cannot do it. They don't have the guts and nerves to take such action, I presume. Wai tsoro zasu bayar. Very funny of them.

Though I once heard (and watched :-[ after googling the info/pics) some women in Europe (I forget the country) protested shamelesly nude. But here is Nigeria and there there. ;)
