Title: If I had My Way...
Post by: *~MuDa~* on January 12, 2008, 03:55:10 PM
Hello guys,

I was thinking we could use this thread to bare our minds on some things that are really disturbing us but we dont have a solution to it, you know...it could be something sorrowful, intriguing, funny and may be very wise and intellectual. Its also like some kind of game because it can extend on and on according to the worldly affairs because we are free to challenge and question and discuss about each feelings.

So I begin....

If I have my way...

I will scrap off "Gara" from the list of our traditional marriage rights.

Assalamu alaikum,

Ow God! Dear God! Just thinking of it is so …………anyway if I had my way….first things first……….declare coca-cola as mine and debase all coca-cola factories back to my backyard and gulp unlimited bottles/cans of it & not have to listen to agonizing remarks: "u have been warned to stay off it…..blah blah blah”. Its simply something I cant even imagine myself living without (and God forbid it happenin)!!!!!

Secondly, stop all stupid mails containing………if you don’t send this forward to so, so & so the gates of heaven will be closed to you. Imagine!!!!!!!!!. Like I even hav time 4 4wards!!

Thirdly, make all spiders EXTINCT.
This myt sound silly but they are the first 3 things dat cme 2 my mind.

Lol...and you are blabbing? Dont you know tha the gara is in the detriment of the bride's parent? What if they can not afford it? Besides, it only increases the incapability of the groom and makes them less responsible, some grooms nowadays go for the rich girls so as to have a very succulent gara in their possession. But to me personally, If i have my way i will not accept it because it kinds of makes me feel incapable to my duties as a husband, what the hell... am i the one marrying the girl or it is the girl that is marrying me? Ta kawo kayan daki, ta kawo kayan kitchen, ta kawo wannan da wancan sannan kuma ta ciyar da kai, kai kuma me ka yi?

Hehehhehehehehennnn......Kai Danborno, (Janborgo) sha ruwa daidai cikinka fa!
So you want to copy from RABE, the estwhile warrior who scattered Kanem empire
and annihilated kanuris? Some kanuris run to as far as present day Lafiya just
to escape Rabe's invasion. Some even crossed over to Niger republiic. It will be difficult
for you to achieve that your "if I Had My Way." since you people didn't have your way
with Rabe! ;D

If I had my way, I will organize a get together for all Kanooliners on the 2/2/08 to be held
at the banquet hall of Nicon Transcorp. Danborno will be in charge of food and drinks.
Ofcourse, the "burabusko and inti marara" must be on the menu! Gogan and Myself will take
care of the sitting arrangements, ushersand banners. EMTL will do both opening and closing prayers.
Husna will organize the venue, and public speaking system. Muhsin will be incharge of
invitations and protocols. Ummita and Hafsy will take charge of gift items. Ajingi and Bee will
be honored with security arrangements. Muda, of course, will shoulder the costs, at all costs, if
"I had my way."! ;D

Kayan gara suna taimakawa Amarya da Ango- it is very precious parting gifts to the daughter. The Holy prophet (SAW) provided some intencils and other things wives need when he(SAW) gave out Fatima. EMTL,

I'd really like you to elaborate your words so I can grasp your meaning more straight. Were you saying that gara is originated from that gift of Prohpet Muhammad (SAW) to Fadima (rAn)? Or what? If its from there then doing it means in a bit way mandetory, eh?

Muhsin, I dont think gara had anything to do with the prophet SAW. This is because it can be a great burden on parents and ba a ta ba yin abu a cikin musulunci ba wanda zai kasance wahala ga musulmai. Shi yasa auren ma a ka ce sadaki ne kurum ya halatta shi. Every other thing is extra. Shi sadakin kuma yana da lower limit, although ba shi da upper limit, an barwa namiji at his discretion in so far as he doesnt go beyond the lower limit in the negative direction.
Ita gara is a help for the bride and groom. But unfortunately, ta zama abin alfahari which is wrong. Za ka ga wa'yansu matan suna gasar gara. Wata ma har gori ake mata in bata zo da gara gidan miji ba which shouldnt be the case, tunda it is his responsibility to feed her not her to feed him.
I know personally of a woman who did auren kashe wuta. She had a kishiya in her new home (she was no. 2). Because tana so ta nuna wai ita tafito daga gidan masu hali, sai ta sa rigima sai 'yan uwan ta sun yi mata gara.. and the woman get 10 kids fa from her previous marriage. So when ta sa rigima, the 'yan uwa did what they could karo karo here and there. A ka hada buhun shikafa, masara gero mai, and what not, aka kai gidan one fine night. The very next day, tayi yaji..ta ki komawa gidan har abada cos she made up with her first hubby.
When ever I think of this incident I cant see anything except foolish pride attached to it.. Ta je ta kai wa kishiya alatun abinci ta yi gaba ta fita...wai ita ta burge kenan.. ta nuna ita ba 'yar yunwa ba ce or some such rubbish...ta sa mutane sun wasting din  resources din su, that some could ill afford tasssui!! :(

LOL @ muhsin and his aunty.

Don't you imagine how I come to knowing the negative effect of gara in our community at my age? Thats a real life experience.

A very poor family girl at our neigbour, who was like a good sister to me was married some few months ago. The dowry given by the husband was N20,000. She was extremely exuberant with the amount. Thus she started saying that she would buy this and that to decorate her room more.

Eventually, she was taken to Katsina. And as the custom there, a bride is taken to her house along with her gara. And more eventually, her parent at that very moment didn't have much money for that, saboda kunsan biki. Ta dole sai da aka karbi N15,000 out from her dowry, which, remember, the bride is entiled to, and bought that gara.

When I paid visit to my sister who is also married in Katsina a week after that girl's wedding. She asked me to talked to her elder brother about the money they collected, saying she's in need of them. Ita kanta bata san cewa wa'annan kudi anyi amfani da su wajen siyar mata gara. They just told her to handle the money for the meantime ta gama rurumar biki. She even didn't know I know about the issue. So sai ta gaya min a rufe. I remained mute and almost curse whoever introduce that thing in our society.

Don Allah ina amfanin irin wannan, ko kadan?

I am forced to understand that all those advocating for the
abolishing of 'gara' are doing it on selfish motive.  I imagine
giving out my two beautiful daughters without giving them
as much gara as i could grap out of my pocket, what is the
essense of my money.

We have to remember that even the food we eat differ from
house to house, so also all modes of life, you dont expect
Mr. A's gara to be the same as Mr. B's gara and it is not
something that is compulsory, but to me, if i have money
it is compulsory to me to make my daughter proud and happy
in her home by giving her all the goodies including the rumoured
EOD Honda - meye kirtanku ne, duk Muda ne ya fara wannan
maganan garan.  Allah ya kaimu rannan aurenka, I will tell
your inlaws to retain all the gara, haka zamu kaita let her
sleep on that your old (outaded VONO Mattress) ;D

I am surprised at Husnaa's replies also, ko dai a chan turai kika
yi aure ne, if not, you are supposed to have enjoyed gara very
well.

I see wisdom in gara.

Yes GGNK you spoke my mind.

Gata kan gata; ko su waye such succesful husbands?

Dan Barno, the reason behind our, or particularly my hatred toward gara is not completly base on self interest. Am wholeheartedly sure fathers like you, who could do such a strong vow to do gara for there daughters are extremely few. In these day, how parent manage with the skin of their teeth a tattara a kai yarinya dakin mijinta?

But, let me come down and say; I don't know your custom there. As we are told, you very tight strict to tradition. Wai bride-groom must do a number of trosseou, i.e kayan lefe. One for the girl, another her mother and even her grand mother. If thats true...then there is nothing astonishing at your words.

DB, read what I have said before your reply. Wallahi it happened. If gara can create and impose such a difficulty for parents, don't you reckon scrapping it would be better?

We are very materialistic. We do everything to show the world that mun isa. Kabaa'ir. That is the word. Anyway, I am not surprised at DB's words, mutan Borno an san su da jin kai da takama. Saboda haka, anything to show that they ARE, they will do. Its like Muhsin said, takurawa iyaye ne.

Just so you know DB, not everyone has the capacity to furnish his daughters marital home and then provide loads of food to go with. I think as a husband, if you are very comfortable, like your caliber, it will be selfishness receiving gara again...what if you had more daughters...like 8? Infact, is there a problem or a sin if a groom rejects Gara in his custody? It was never written anywhere that gara is incumbent to see the walls of the marital home of a new bride...common, ku tausayya ma iyaye mana? Dama ana yin abu da hankali da tunani da ma yafi, amma nowadays it has become so competitive, har to the point of back biting on the bride in reference of her poor gara...anya zamu gama da duniya lafiya kuwa?

We are very materialistic. We do everything to show the world that mun isa. Kabaa'ir. That is the word. Anyway, I am not surprised at DB's words, mutan Borno an san su da jin kai da takama. Saboda haka, anything to show that they ARE, they will do. Its like Muhsin said, takurawa iyaye ne. Kuma bayan haka its not a question of kayi iya karfin ka, no, there is a standard where by one must meet, kuma har kirga wa ake yi how many buhus of food u were taken with, just like GGNK mentioned above. Bayan haka ma, ai abincin gets shared out amongst dangin mijin ba wai barma matar ake yi 100%. Dangin miji da su ka bi suke addabbar matar dan uwan su.

Lets talk on a serious note please, i know, my people sabi

of globalisation is high here in Borno, we accept changes.

I was trying to post this when I was notified of Muda's post.

Malam Muda, let me tell you something, in as long as you did
not find fault in not doing gara, then there is no way you can
see fault with a person who despite his economic standard
accept to do gara to his only beloved daughter going to her
matrimonial house, a preparation which took him may be 2
or 3 years.

That is why I said there are things that even though they are
show off, but its also allowed.  So, when I am marrying out my
two daughters, i dont mind selling any of my property if i dont
have cash with me to make them happy just for once.

Kuma I will make sure you Muda on your wedding day na sadakar
da dukkan gayan garanka, including the Honda Accord 2008 model.

Amma a gaskiya Husnaa you have never taken a weak side
like this, except may be if i still misunderstood the term under
criticism.

We all knew how our traditional marriage is, the father alone
doesnt shoulder all the responsibilities, aunties, uncles, cousins,
grannys and so many dangis come together and contribute
which transforms into gara.  On several occasions, if it were
to be left alone to iyaye kawai, so many of them cannot afford
amma da taimakon jama'a sai komai yatafi dai dai.

So many young girls that are so enterprising make good use of
their 'gara' and in no much time, it transforms into wealth thereby
gaining an economic independence catering for her immediate
problems.

I can vividly recall a friend who was unfortunately involved in a
banking scandal, he was out of job for a very long time and in
between the 'hard period' the girls' gara did wonderfully in
sustaining the house.

Whoever initiated this gara of a thing, surely did it for a purpose.

Gata kan gata; ko su waye such succesful husbands?
Ka turo Auntyn ka muyi magana, ai kai yaro ne!!!

Finally, let me emphasis to Auntyn Muhsin that there are things
you must do to show off.

Malam Muda, let me tell you something, in as long as you did
not find fault in not doing gara, then there is no way you can
see fault with a person who despite his economic standard
accept to do gara to his only beloved daughter going to her
matrimonial house, a preparation which took him may be 2

I still find it at fault because that father i am very sure did not do the gara willingly, He did  it obligatori;y, if he had a way, he wouldnt have, it is because he wants to escape from societal stigma and shame that he had to succumb to saving some 3 years before just to reach the minimum requirement. Haba Dan Borno?

Ok! back to these Gara debacle, i think one can look at it in many different angles.
As we all know it has been going on for generation and obviously its a tradition that anyone of us cannot break, but we can help in how its perceived by doing it according to ones means.

There are so many traditions in our society that have been taken over the top, n these is definately one of them.

All these you mentioned above aren't, I think, categorize as kayan gara rather as necessary appliances. And even the second category aren't also kayan gara. Itafa gara is quite different, though I don't know how it is over there--your area.

   Salam
Gara. One of those things that are not compulsory but we do anyway.Personally,i dont see any real harm in presenting it as long as it is not made mandatiory for anyone.I think we should compare it to Lefe.A gift by the groom to his bride. It is also not necessary but culture and tradition has made it so.If  parents can afford to do gara, then so be it.It does not matter how much you give as long as you can afford it.You dont have to give 10 bags of rice just because your neighbour's daughter was given that same amount when she got married, when you know you can only afford 2 bags.Hausawa na cewa in baki da gashin wance kar kiyi kisan wance, you will only end up being the foolish one at the end so why bother?Perhaps it would have been much easier if the parents from both sides contribute to the gara tunda aikin lada ne in anyi fisabillillah.Ai ba wanda bai san lada.
And if one does not like gara for a particular reason, ill suggest that that person should not accept it when getting married.that way,one does not have to worry about doing the same to his or her girls when giving them out for marriage.
If i had my way,i'll make sure hooting (horning)is banned on our roads.Same goes to that unnecessary siren just because some dignitaries are passing by.The noise makes me want to scream!!!

I am hundred percent behind Danborno's wish. That Nigeria should be splitted. The reason for that is that surely the north will survive. Whoever thinks the north will not survive after the break, must know that there are so many countries that have no oil and are doing very well in all facets of life. IF I HAD MY WAY, THE NORTH WILL BREAKAWAY from Nigeria today! ???
Title: Re: If I had My Way...

Realistically masifa za'a shiga kawai.

Title: Re: If I had My Way...
Post by: waduz on February 11, 2008, 04:27:40 PM
Haba Goga, do not dispair. The question I want to ask you is this, what is happening to the people in the countries that do not have oil? I still believe that the north will be more united, prosperous and easy to govern nation. Just know that, here, so long as the Almighty will continue to open up the skies for the seasonal rains to pour, we in this part of the country will depend on no one's crumbs!
Title: Re: If I had My Way...

DB my question to you:- How do you think the northern states can boost internally generated revenue?

GGNK ke nan, ina ganin yau ka taso da kafar hagune ko?
ko dai kana da wata "dhimmi" ne a can Porthacourt, the
proposed split will not affect those who are committed
and bound by love, business or any other activity.  It is
just a geographical split up, while all regions are now
sovereign.

As for your question:

1.  We have enough fertile land to boost agricultural
production.  Even with out the fuel, if the north can
concentrate on agriculture it can sustain the nation.
We have the best "Gum Arabic" farms in the north
for international export.  Muna noman cotton and lots
of other Internationally accepted agricultural products.
(Aunty Husnaa should brief you on the Lake Chad basin
and how Wheat is being produced there)

2.  Animal farming; you will agree with me that the north
is proud of its healthy animals (ina yar bafulatananne)?
Abi you don forget that the animal skin is also booming
     in the international market.

3.  Transportation (both road and rail) could be a very good
source of revenue to the north.

4.  Tourism (Where is Nuruddeen, brief us on Yankari please)

5.  The north before now is well known for payment of head
tax which government of these days never care to look at.
By strict payment of taxes (Haraji) government will realise
     a lot of money.

6.   ??? if all these didnt work, we will collect loan from IMF.
Bashi yana tsuliyan kowa ai. lol

Waduz there are a lot of countries that don't have oil but yet are doing excellently well.France,Germany ETC.
Amma dai Nigerians yadda muke very lazy dinnnan, oil is a blessing even though muna cewa it is a curse.
Without the oil money we wouldn't have been where we are.We have to thank God for blessing us with our only means of National Income (Alhamdulillah)

Nigeria can be split only if oil is found in the North.

Kai kuma alanguburo...how did u know i had a P/H related love interest...ko ka iya duba ne?  ;D

Anyways

Yes We have good fertile and arable land. Why isn't it in use now?
We are talking of what will sustain more than 50 million people o! Not farming for what you will buy maggi.

2.  Animal farming; you will agree with me that the north
is proud of its healthy animals (ina yar bafulatananne)?
Abi you don forget that the animal skin is also booming
     in the international market.

DB an barka a baya fa?Bamu da wasu dabbobin kirki fa.
God blessed us with Niger and Chad as neighbours. That is where all the animals come from.
Don't be decieved by seeing them Waduz and Ummita frequently crossing the streets
with their less than 100 cows now and then.

3.  Transportation (both road and rail) could be a very good
source of revenue to the north.

Bari muyi gwari gwari:
Lets say we have 30000 cars travelling each day.
Toll gate fee is 50 Naira
In a year we will get N547million.(quite impressive)
For a nation?

4.  Tourism (Where is Nuruddeen, brief us on Yankari please)

I'll also wait for Nuruddeen to come back from Yankari(being renovated from oil proceeds)

5.  The north before now is well known for payment of head
tax which government of these days never care to look at.
By strict payment of taxes (Haraji) government will realise
     a lot of money.

    Jangali kake magana kenan.

6.   ??? if all these didnt work, we will collect loan from IMF.
Bashi yana tsuliyan kowa ai. lol

LOL...mu ci kuma mu ki biya ba.

Another question for you:- How will you divide it?
Vertically or horizontally?

And Waduz...talking about unity. Do you actually believe we are any more united as a Hausa Nation than an entity of Nigeria? For long we have searched for greener pastures and if raising boarders would make our deserts green, we would have dont that long ago.

I dont really have much time to go throught this right now, but for Arewa Sake. You better be joking

Can u imagine the abundant of resources if Africa should unite. take oil for an instance, Nigeria is the number 4 oil exporter in the world. if Libya, and other oil producing nations in Africa should become one dont you think we will not only boost our economy we can also have a great influence in the world politically n economonically

About splitting Nigeria, I don't care oen way or the other. However, I have a feeling it would be the best for us. We've become too laid-back in the North. Even the fear expressed by some of us here indicates just how dependant and lazy we've become as a region on the South (read oil). With all the oil aren't we still suffering, and retrogressing? This country was doing just fine before the discovery of oil. And would do fine without it. Allah yasa man ya kafe, mu ga yadda za'a yi. Mutuwa zamu yi kenan ko kuwa? A lot of countries have developed without oil.

muda why are u so worried ne? have u lost faith so soon? Ka manta tun ran gini tun ran zane?
Look, you are young. Just starting out. No one expects you to have millions stashed away. Hopefully you will become gainfully employed. If you cannot find govt work, look to private institutions. If u cant find that either, try entrepreneurship.. work for yrself... think of innovative ways.. I mean you already are computer literate so look within that field and see what u can do. Learn software programming or some such.
Remember that unless your life is truncated, that the money will come eventually insha Allah, even if its not as much as u would wish, it will come... And just as surely, the right girl will come along. One who will look at YOU not what you possess. Surely since u were an embryo that information was recorded for u, how many wives you will have, how many kids, how u will struggle to acquire all.. so just relax and pray to Allah SWT.  Allah Said
"Wa izha sa'alaka ibadeey anniy, fa inni kareeb. Ujeebu da'awatuddaa'i izha da'aan. Fal yastajeebuulee, wal yu' minuu bee, la allahum yarshiduun"
And when My servants ask concerning Me, I am indeed near. I respond to the duas of the prayer, when he calls on Me. So let them obey Me and believe in Me so that they maybe led aright. (suratul baqara verse 186).
So why are you getting so twisted? Just relax, invoke Allah and know that in so far as you ask and work and strive, you have NOTHING to worry about.

Well said kitkat, this can as well be termed as the facts of life, but the thing is that, it is not yet prominent, that is why marriage is mostly neglected nowadays and you get to find out that majority of girls and women are swiming in the pool of celibacy. Do you really think hausa man like for example in Kano will consent to such cheap wedding? I seriously doubt, i know there might be exceptions but gaskiya da kyar....lol.

It is said that wai when you suffer before bringing her in you would value her more.I strongly disagree with that.If i suffer too much just to bring one woman into my house and then find out after the marriage that she isn't worth all the effort wahala don begin kenan fa.That means pessin go dey reflect back on the suffer suffer wey u suffer.

GGNK, Know what? I am a woman, but I get driven up the wall with parents who make too many demands on the groom. Do you know why I get mad? Because I have brothers to whom the same could happen, and there are also my sons when they get married. So this problem is not solely the problem for the groom; its his whole family, cos su a ke wulakantawa if the bride's family will not accept the groom within his economic confines.
I tell you  guys duk iyayen da sukai muku irin wannan wulakancin that the house or the bed wont fit in, what u should do is tell them to keep the wife at home till u get better, then you will invite her to live with you. Believe me they will immediately begin to change their tune. In the meantime if they persist, Wallahi call the marriage off. Abin da yafiye maka alheri kenan. No matter how much a man loves a woman or a woman loves a man, they can always live without each other and eventually the love fades even if it unconsumated love. Haba!! o jare!!

If i had my way i will build a new city out of Kano.
I will relocate the govt house, gov's office and secreteriat to the new city.
There will be no okada men and no 'kiya kiya' buses, only brand new 18 seater buses and above will be allowed.
Alla plots will be standard sizes, babu awon igiya. Anybody building a house MUST plant trees.
The roads will be 4 lane carriage ways.

Everytime I get to kano, within the first hour my head aches badly. Whether I'm staying for a couple of days or a week, it doesnt really matter cuz my head continues that aching. There isn't a single suiting breeze in the city to be proud of. I think the Gov needs to seriously look into this air and noise pollution in Kano as a first class problem. The dangers are very very high, pretty soon the city will become inhabitable. I love the city of Kano, but for me, it is inhabitable already.

So on the game. If I had my way, I will build green belts across Kano, Katsina, Sokoto and all those states threatened by desertification(for a start). Hek if I had my way, I will bring back the great Saharan Sea which used to exist where is now the sahara desert.

Safety and peace

Sincerely speaking, govt need to do something very urgent because the whole garin is getting inhabitable, as already mentioned Ibro2g.

Any way, one thing that I'll like to correct you by saying is that that Kano is already inhabitable, gaskiya its habitable. Though you said to you but still I think not and feel like that is a bit exageration...LOL. Am depending my living place, huh? ;D ;D

What do you guys mean by Kano is inhabitable? In what sense? Kano is fine. Noisy, yes. But so is any commercially viable, cosmopolitan town. Try Lagos, Aba, Onitsha, Ibadan etc? Even Abuja, where the might of the Fed. Govt is used for Urban planning/development is becoming same. Abi u want make Kano govt relocate ppl? Though I believe the govt should put in place modalities to ease traffic congestion.

Kai Muda ba haka bane fa!! Kano state's has had a master plan since the time of Marigayi Audu Bako, Allah Ya Gafarta masa. It was called the Trevallion Plan  ( i think). No other govt has made a new one, but most of the ones da suke kishin Kano tried to implement some aspects of it during their regimes. I think the most notable amongst the governors after the most revered Audu Bako, must be Abubakar Rimi. I thnk it was under his incumbency that sabon titi was constructed which ran from Aminu Kano road through Gwale and joined the central mosque to that once outer part of Kano state. We used to think that it was a brilliant thing to have done, until we were informed in class that it was all in the Trevallion Plan and its execution was forestalled because Audu Bako was replaced by the useless colonel sani bello or was it shekari? Audu Bako was the most visionary governor Kano has ever had, and whatever good you see in Kano was because of him.
The problem with the later governors (Rimi excluded) was that they were selfish and only out to make trade land in Kano. The blue print for Kasuwar Sabon gari was actually much better than what was eventually built. When it was built, there was at least a huge carpark that can park about 1000 cars or more. But what happened later? even the carpark was apportioned into corner shops and sold or rented out. Now there is no where for anyone to park except outside and therefore the two lane road has become so congested since most of it has been taken over as parking space.  When New site was going to be built, gidajen nan na kabuga housing estate were non existent and all that area was farmland. The ideal thing would have been for the authorities to annex the surrounding lands and just extend BUK so that no one had to travel 5 km to the new site. But to my own belief, the thought of all that compensation money to be paid out to displaced farmers was too tempting to pass up. What I am saying here is that most of what should have been paid to farmers for being displaced from their lands ended up somewhere else. Maybe if the land next to the old site had been acquired by BUK then, no compensation would have been paid.. I dont know. This is just conjectyure on my part, cos I have always wondered at the logic behind locating the new campus so far away from the old one when there was no need to at the time. What is more is that if BUK had done that, then they would have been sitting on some very prime real estate now.
By far the worst time that kano had was under the regimes of Ibrahim Gaya and Kwankwaso. Ibrahim Gaya introduced Acaba on a massive scale to Kano state and hence immeasurably contributed to the horrendous level of pollution being experienced now. Kwankwaso shi kuma carved out all the GRA lands and parceled them into smaller pieces which were sold to his cohorts. The problem with this was that all those wonderful residential areas that were low density became relatively midddle level density residential areas. Thirdly, the trees that were growing in many of the carved out lands had to be cut to make way for massive ugly private residences thus lessening the aesthetic effects that they'd always given to the GRA.  He also gave vent to the  mass hysteria of corner shops. Kuma one of the cardinal sins committed to architecture in Kano state, though not the fault of Kwankwaso or Gaya, was that those very classically beautiful colonial houses that used to be everywhere on Lodge Road were torn down and replaced by nonedescript poor quality houses. I just pray to God that there are some of them left, kuma Allah Ya bani kudin sayen daya daga cikin su. Those houses were really built to last.

Husna, amma are those colonial houses so still good looking and habitable?
kaji ka kai kuma!  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ! Ba kasa a diba a gina su ba? if they are not habitable cant they be restored? should they be pulled down? kasan da barute ya gina su, ya gina su ne for HIMSELF so he took extra care to make them comfortable and used all his existing technology like what we also have.. that is natural ventilation, high ceilings, spacious big rooms everywhere.. utility rooms (how many of our ppl include utility rooms in the design of their  private residences? flagstone terraces and porches... haba.. Real stone buildings that dont crack easily.. If u want evidence, just compare the old structural buildings din universities like ABU and BUK and what was later built u will know what I mean. Bayan haka kuma those houses had character all of their own. Kana ganinsu u could tell from which era they came from. Just look at the British Council Building mana... its made in a Hausa Traditional style which is one of the styles that I have always admired, it could be said to be a mixture of traditional Hausa and colonial architecture. Look at how good the building is. Did u know that the blackened walls of the BC was a result of making the walls using  Tamarind fruit in the 'concrete' mixture. Tamarind has some properties that make the walls water proof or something like that (I am not an architect so I cant say much about it only that it makes the structure longer lasting and more qualitative). When I was  young (8  or 9 yrs old), I remember one of my step moms was friends with the wife of the secretary to the state governor and they lived in one of those hausa styled colonial houses (like the British Council) and we used to go for visits and ever since I have admired those types of houses. They were so modern inside while preserving the atmosphere of a typical Hausa architecture (see bayya's avatar and u will see what I mean).

Well said Husnaa, it feels good to know that there was actually a kind of plan for the construction of kano state. But then building major roads is not always the issue, its been done har yanzu i suppose, and before it was mostly done inthe GRA and some few other places. What i reeally want to do, if i had my way...lol, was to make a standard housing plan arragement for the whole of kano state, i think we only have that in the GRA, Kundila Housing Estate, and Gandu Albasa and Kabuga Housing Estate.

To me thats too hard. And not because am among them, wallahi. But there are people who, no matter how hard they will be lectured (or taught) and read, they'll not perform (very) well. Thats to say, simply, learning capabilities varies, grossly. Psychologists say there are fast, moderate and slow leaners. And I add there are dull who barely understand a thing they are taught. How could you do with such people...??? Let them go almost astray on the streets, their manageable qualification same as 'takardar tsire'?

Bari na baka labari, recently an aptitude test was called somewhere in

That's an exception. It is not the general rule. 8 out of 10 times a first class grad is better than a 3rd class grad.. Are u telling me if you have a company and u receive applications, u would ignore those with first and second class degrees and employ those with 3rd class ? No matter the imperfections in the university system, u can't tell me that it is okay to come out with a 3rd class degree, and that there shouldn't be prejudice in the labour market.

You know, that would have been good, but considering the rate of unemployed graduates flooding the labour market, one cannot help but infiltrate them into various companies so as to help reduce the labour market, and again, in addition, i also disagreed on rating university students intelligence based on their results, if really you want to get an intelligent student, i thin they should introduce face to face interveiw, then we will be sure of a students intelligence.

Haba Malam Bakangizo, that is not the theme of my argument
concerning (We) the third class students, if you can recall this is
what you wished for us:

Honestly why should someone come out with a 3rd Class or pass degree after spending 5-6 years in the uni?. A gaskiya that person is not employable.

To this post, sai Abokina GGNK reminded you in his words.

BKGZ kenan.
Kasan destiny?

that was when i now replied you by citing a true story
and also told you that so many students bought the so
called class of degree from the university at the detriment
of their fellow students.

My argument is, if you restrict employment to only 1st and
2nd class students, then I think the Federal Government
through the NUC should as from hence forth dont allow any
student to graduate with a third class or pass result, he
should be withdrawn completely - since even if he graduates
no one will employ him.

Their are handful students who even before your graduation
know that they are 1st class product because of their level
of brilliancy - there is no doubt about that. But this doesnt mean
that a third class product (like DB) doesnt deserve to be
employed because dolo ne. hahaha lol.  A rika yi mana sassauci
mana - ko dai kuna son mu fara tare mutane a highway ne.

The university system is not only designed to give academic
performance, but also training to prepare you to the outside
world.  No matter the level of ones degree, there is more
waiting for him outside, it is only when he performs better,
we can say his 1st or 2nd class has been complemented, else
da haka ake gane jebun class of degree.

BKG i agree that people are not born equal. As muhsin said, there are different categories of learners.

I remember a professor from the faculty i graduated, responding to some 'intelligent' students mockery of the 'unintelligent' ones. He said that in his 30yrs tutorship he has learnt that class of degree is very irrelevant to when it comes to employment. Being a guidance counsellor he has seen where a low ranking student takes three times the credit load of the first classer and manages to come out with an average grade between C and E.
He said he always enjoys supervising the lower ranking ones's projects because they show their intelligence there.

There are many examples i have where the 3rd classers rank highest in aptitude tests.A friend who works in a recruitment consulting firm attested to me.
In my office, we have an engineer that graduated with a pass degree (not even 3rd class) and i tell you, some work only he can do.Most of our staff take him to be a first classer.

Sannan kuma in this our country where our friends from the bottom of the map virtually grade themselves at business centres or more fairly, produce the results themselves, how do you expect our people to compete?

If i had a firm i would not discriminate. I would give a short aptitude test then call for an interview like Muda suggested. There i will know who is who.
I don't like crammers who only cram and don't understand.

Goga, like I said, those are exceptions. They are not, repeat, not the general rule. Of course it is natural to have such cases here and there. I'm not saying 3rd class and Pass degree holders are olodos. No. But in so far as there should be criteria in employment, common sense dictates that they should be on the reserve bench.

You are even gonna make it worse that way. A short aptitude test is simply an elimination tool, designed to screen out ppl in a hurry. It is not a veritable method of employing smart ppl who would add value to the organization in the long run.

You see you just read my and many peoples' mind. i can agree that ASUU have their reasons, but if F.G is not doing the right thing-as one active ASUU member told me when i challenge him on the incessant strikes- then ask ASUU to answer these questions:
1. How many of them gives to students the knowledge they are being paid to give? you will see a lecturer using notes enogh to be the ones he uses at undergraduate level.

2. How many of them attends lectures as due as it is necessary?

3. How many of them takes students to labs as frequent as necessary?

You can ask a lot of questions on ASUU members on doing the right thing.

Ba haka bane.
ABU students were so used to frequent loooong strikes during the pre kontogora days that any schools session used to look like zuku to them.
Fact is that BUK adheres to the 4 month lectures and 1 month exam schedule for 1st semester and 3 month lecture and 1 month schedule for the second semester.

I disagree, sir. We actually use to count the number of weeks BUK spent per semester. It was always shorter compared to the rest. And I'm not talking about ABU alone. How come we don't feel same way about ATBU, FUT Minna, UDU, UNIMAID, etc? I remember us asking jokingly then whether NUC had a different Semester Program/Schedule for BUK  ;D

ai baka sani ba.you do not have to commit a big crime to get a piece of that cable wire.you know some people can be so heartless.beating kids with cable wire is like beating a tree.they do not care.to them, that is the only way to dicipline a child.in other places, that is child abuse.unfortunately, not in my beloved country.

substandard products! i dont even know what this
SON is doing.  they are suppose to verify all products
that are produced locally or being manufactured with
the intention of importing them into nigeria, certify
them to be of national standard before allowing it to
the market.

though NAFDAC is trying, but the pharmaceutical market
is still infiltrated with substandard drugs - whose fault?

i will blame those who are in charge of our borders,
especially the customs who are empowered to clear and
inspect all goods coming into the country, they ought to
have been reporting suspecting products.  and apart from
that, the custom men allow smuggled goods through the
ports without taking the due process, however, if you
did not give the customs "egunje" in less than 12 hours
you will be featured on NTA Crime Report.

LOL touche,i don't hate the chinese people, i just don't like thier fake products.
These peole have no standards body at all. No one reviews their products and
they dump such products here. The worse is they will imitate a product that is
known for its quality and the unsuspecting buyer will buy that product thinking
it is the original product.
If only the SON will act accordingly as DB suggested.

Hehehe,Chinese SU.....nah they are too small for me and they all look alike.

You guys.
Make uwa no make my head grow like over ripe pumpkin ooooooooooooo ;D ;D ;D ;D
No to be honest, this is what we need. The old technologies are just not feasible becos the means whereby we get the resources are disappearing, for example  we have less rainfall so less freshwater is available, but at the same time, there is the ocean which is ever increasing. So why not harness its resources.. water for example? The point is that things like this ought to be done NOW, when Nigeria has the money rolling in. Its very expensive, but instead of distributing the cash to the thirty six states every month and watch it disappear down the drain, why cant the government take one project which will be beneficial to everyone in the country and concentrate on it? Who knows in the future whether we will have the opportunities to do so, when the world is trying its best to get out from under the oil cartel by inventing all sorts of bases for alternative energy?

IIHMW, I would become councillor to of a ward in Kano state. My first act would be to take a popn census of all the ppl in the ward, to find out number of men women, children; number of kids enrolled in schools, which schs they go to, which is nearest hospital frequented by the popn.
I will order some high resolution satellite images of the ward and have a map of ward drawn and its boundaries so I know where it begins and where it ends and also this will give me an idea of where to concentrate services like clinics and schs and public water works

I will distribute questionnaires to each household for them to state 10 of their most immediate or pressing social/civic needs.
I would have a clinic  and maternity hospital built within the ward solely for the use of the ppl.
I will build a youth centre so that vocational training like carpentry, metal welding sewing weaving etc is taught to the ward kids free of charge. Computer training will be available at a small fee.
I will  get them to form local sports teams and use the youth centre for such activities as football basketball, badminton and other games that will keep the kids off the streets. We will also have a giant screening board for when international football matches are played, so everyone can come and watch and parents know where their kids are most of the time.
I would have an evening sch built and ask stake holders to contribute as part time teachers for the kids. This is becos my budget cannot cover the cost of building a full fledged sch and employing full time teachers for it.
I would liase with some international firms on the cheapest source of electricity generation. If possible, we work out a plan whereby individual houses get equipped with solar panels at a subsidized cost and then get the beneficiaries to pay instalmentally for a number of years.
We will have gutter cleaning sessions and all the effluent will collected and processed. I heard that there are processing plants in Lagos and other parts of Nigeria which turn waste into fertilizer. We will liase with these companies and sell our rubbish to them, and we in turn get organic fertilizer at a subsidized rate so if there are any budding farmers in the wards, they can take advantage of this.
Water supply is one thing that will probably be beyond my capacity but even in that, we can do some rain harvesting in the rainy season and I will also encourage  residents of my ward to plant tree seedlings and take care of them. There will be things like rewards ( maybe a holiday in Kenya or  cape verde for who ever is able to successfully plant so many x number of neem trees in a year. I say neem tree because it is fast growing and grows very well in harsh environments unlike our indigenous trees.

There are many other things I'd really like to do if I become a ward councillor. I believe that if we start small there is nothing that cant be done.
ofcourse I'd hold a sort of council meeting every fortnight or month where all the elders of the wards participate fully in all acitivities so that they ensure the full cooperation of everyone. Sitting allowances of say N10,000 each will be paid to invited attendees. I hope my chairman who ever that is will be very supportive cos that is where the budget will be coming from.

This is a great topic.
There is so much Nigeria can be and can do.
You  need honest government right down to local level before it can happen
I could write all night. You see I live in a very small country that is presently not realising its huge potential because it is subsumed into the United Kingdom but all my life I have imagined what we could do in an independent Scotland (we used to be independent) and we are getting there now. It is because we can dream what we can do that keeps us going on and reaching for a better future. Nigeria needs its dreamers who can imagine the great things that Nigeria can do and be prepared to work politically for it.
But honest government is the first requirement.
When I was an inspector in the Educational Resource Centre (KERC) near the zoo the physics depatment were making solar panels that could boil water out of glass panels and car radiators and all kind of other experiments were going on. They were producing small windmills powered by heat convection out of concrete pits even on calm days. The biggest solar panel in the world was near Zinder when I was in Nigeria.  Nigeria could easily supply all its lighting needs from storing solar power.Your two major rivers could have several dams on them for hydro power. Bio diesel can be produced from corn and groundnuts.
The nuclear power solution is ultimately non-viable as the world is running out of uranium.
Irrigation and the storage of seasonal rains would revolutionise the north. If this was done seriously it would probably change the weather patters and lengthen the rainy season. It is over half a century since Bagauda and Tiga dams were planned. Has anything else along these lines been done with the vast sums of money available to Nigeria over this time or has it all been stolen. The oil money will eventually come to an end and what will Nigeria do then if it hasn't been used to restructure the Nigerian economy, revitilise agriculture and build a modern infrastructure with modern provision of services.
Title: Re: If I had My Way...
Post by: gogannaka on August 04, 2008, 09:19:12 AM

Havent you heard about a tree species that is being touted as the resource for biofuels? I cant remember its name, but apparently it has some great advantages, namely its not food so it doesnt contribute to the food crisis. It  grows in inhospitable environment, doesnt require much water and I think is quick growing. All in all a bio wonder where fuel is concerned.
