ABOUT US

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "When a human being dies, his work comes to and end, except for three things: ongoing charity, knowledge benefited from, or a pious son who prays for him" (Sahih Muslim)

The Yan Taru business is a waqf and The Yan Taru Women's Charitable and Educational Foundation will administer the profits from this waqf by spending the money made from the yan-taru label items, donations and fundraising on community service. The Foundation focuses on women and children and is committed to community outreach through education and social welfare programs.

We wish to revive the Way of Life (sunnah) of our beloved Prophet Muhammad through emulating the great scholar, educator, and Islamic leader, Nana Asma'u (1793-1864), daughter of the great reviver of Islam, Shaykh Uthman ibn Fuduye'. Shaykh Uthman was a scholar-warrior, social reformer, the founder of the Sokoto Caliphate and one of Nana Asma'u's many teachers. Nana Asma'u, a descendant of Prophet Muhammad , established the historical Yan Taru over 150 years ago in West Africa as a means of educating and serving the women of her society. We, the women of the Yan Taru Foundation, are connected to the historical Yan Taru through the leadership of the Sultan of Mai Wurno, Sudan, Amirul-Mu'mineen Sultan al-Hajj Abu Bakr ibn Muhammad at-Tahir ibn Muhammadu Bello ibn Muhammadu Attahiru ibn Uthman ibn Fuduye'. Through educational programing, social welfare and facilitating enterprise we hope to succeed in following the example of the pious women of Islam through the ages and places, going back to the noble sahabiyyat who were taught by our beloved Prophet Muhammad .
