An-Nawawi records in his book Riyad us-Saliheen:

Allah the Exalted said:

O you who believe, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous, for a limited number of days. So whoever among you is ill or on a journey, then an equal number of days to be made up. Upon those who are in hardship, a substitute of feeding a poor person. Whoever volunteers excess, it is better for him, but to fast is best for you, if you only knew. The month of Ramadan is that in which was revealed the Quran, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever sights the month, let him fast it. Whoever is ill or on a journey, then an equal number of other days. Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and He intends for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that to which He has guided you, for perhaps you will be grateful.

Surah Al-Baqarah 2:183-185

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Allah said: All the deeds of the children of Adam are for them, except fasting which is for Me, and I will give the reward for it.

The Prophet said further:

Fasting is a shield. If one of you is fasting, he should avoid intimate relations with his wife and arguments. If somebody should fight or argue with him, he should say: I am fasting. By Him in whose hand is my soul, the unpleasant smell coming from the mouth of a fasting person is better in the sight of Allah than the smell of musk. There are two pleasures for the fasting person, one at the time of breaking his fast and the other when he meets his Lord; then he will be pleased because of his fasting.

In another narration, the Prophet said:

Allah says: He has left his food, drink, and desires for My sake. The fast is for Me, so I will reward him for it and the reward of good deeds is multiplied by ten like it.

In another narration, the Prophet said:

Every deed of the son of Adam is multiplied from ten to seven hundred times. Allah the Exalted says: Fasting is different, for verily, it is done for Me and I will reward it. The fasting person leaves his food and drink, but he is joyous on two occasions: the first is at the time of breaking his fast, and the second is at the time of meeting his Lord. The breath of the fasting person is better to Allah than the fragrance of musk.

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, saying:

Anyone who spends a pair in the cause of Allah will be called from all the gates of Paradise: O servant of Allah, this is good! The people of prayer will be called from the gate of prayer, the people of struggle will be called from the gate of struggle, the people of charity will be called from the gate of charity, and the people of fasting will be called from the gate of fasting, called the gate of Ar-Rayyan.

Abu Bakr said, "One who is called from all those gates will need nothing. Will anyone be called from all those gates, O Messenger of Allah?" The Prophet said:

Yes, and I hope you will be among them, O Abu Bakr.

Sahl ibn Sa'eed reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Verily, there is a gate in Paradise called Ar-Rayyan which only those who fasted will enter on the Day of Resurrection. No one else will enter it along with them. It will be said: Where are those who used to fast so that they may enter? When the last of them enter, it will be closed and no one else will enter through it.

Abu Sa'eed Al-Khudri reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

There is no servant who fasts a day in the way of Allah except that Allah will distance his face from the Hellfire by a distance of seventy years of travel.

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Whoever fasts the month of Ramadan out of faith and seeking reward, then Allah will forgive all of his previous sins. Whoever stands in prayer during the Night of Decree out of faith and seeking reward, then Allah will forgive all of his previous sins.

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

When the month of Ramadan begins, the gates of the heaven are opened and the gates of Hellfire are closed, and the devils are chained.

Source: Sahih Bukhari 1800, Grade: Sahih

Abu Huraira reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said concerning the month of Ramadan:

Fast when you see the new moon and break your fast when you see it, but if the sky is cloudy, then complete the number of days as thirty.

Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, said:

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was the most generous of the people, and he used to be more so in the month of Ramadan when Gabriel visited him. Gabriel, upon him be peace, would meet with him every night of Ramadan until the end of the month. The Prophet would recite the Quran to Gabriel. When Gabriel met him, he would be more generous than a swift wind bringing rain.

Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, said:

During the last ten nights of Ramadan, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, would tighten his belt and spend the night in worship, and he would wake up his family.

An-Nawawi said:

Our companions said that being generous and performing favors are highly recommended during Ramadan, specifically during the last ten nights. By doing so, we emulate the example of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, as well as our pious predecessors. This month is honored and good works carried out in this month are more blessed than they are at any other time.
