Ever wondered why it's so hard to find a job in Nigeria?

Chukwu Emeka had just been retrenched from a highflying job, and now he
set out hoping to bounce back into the job market. He started the day
early having set his alarm clock (MADE IN JAPAN) for 6a.m.

While his coffee pot (MADE IN CHINA) was perking, he shaved with his
electric razor (MADE IN HONG KONG), and bathed with his sponge (FROM SOUTH
AFRICA) and soap (from Ivory Coast) and sprayed his designer perfume (from
France).

He put on a dress shirt (MADE IN ENGLAND, IMPORTED FROM DUBAI), designer
jeans (MADE IN SOUTH AFRICA) and tennis shoes (MADE IN KOREA).
After
cooking his breakfast on his new electric cooker (MADE IN INDIA) he sat
down with his calculator (MADE IN MEXICO) to see how much he could spend
today.

After setting his watch (MADE IN TAIWAN) to the radio (MADE IN JAPAN)
according to BBC (BROADCASTING FROM LONDON) time, he got in his car
(MADE IN GERMANY AND REFURBISHED IN BELGIUM) and continued his search for a
good paying NIGE RIAN JOB.



At the end of yet another discouraging and fruitless day, Chukwu decided
to relax for a while. He sat on his leather couch (MADE IN CANADA) reading
a best-seller novel (PUBLISHED IN USA).
After a while he wanted to
refresh himself. He put on his sandals (MADE IN BRAZIL) poured himself a
glass of wine (MADE IN FRANCE) and turned on his TV (MADE IN INDONESIA),
to CNN (TRANSMITTED FROM AMERICA) and then wondered why he can't find a
good paying job in..... NIGERIA...!

How very true! This is what easy oil money has done. It has inhibited or even destroyed any real effort to maintain or expand Nigerian industry and Nigerian agriculture. It has also fuelled massive corruption.
In many ways the oil money has been a curse to Nigeria (except for the lucky few who have been able to steal huge amounts of it).

Aha - The curse of natural resources... This has been well documented in many books and research papers. Just Google and you will find... The curse of natural resources...

Lets say Chukwu Emeka was once a high flyer, so he could afford all the 'made in' from all over the world except Nigeria. That is his prerogative and lets not deny him his little perks of luxuries. Let us talk about the common man who cannot afford the french perfumes or the english shirts and the brazilian shoes. He is perfectly willing to settle for the made in nigeria as his pocket dictates. However he has to contend with  low quality goods, and that is the crux of the matter. I was telling an Igbo trader in Sabon Gari Market once that I really like their made in Aba shoes because they really do excellent imitation of the foreign ones, however they dont last. You buy one and you will be looking for another pair before the month is out. Nigerians are very willing to patronize Nigerian goods if the manufacturers will improve the quality of the goods. As for broadcasting from the BBC etc, when ray power came on air,  we listened to it because it talked about issues and was current, likewise radio freedom was very popular and i never used to miss the evening programs. But what happened? The Fed Govt put a curfew on radio freedom recently because it didnt like the democratic nature of the programs aired there. Likewise it imposed some constraints on ray power a long time ago. So as the govt has no control over them, is it any wonder that we tune in avidly for some infortainment from the BBC?

PS what about AIT which was first to be on, and report from the scene of the horrific (BelView?)crash last yr and got castigated by the govt for exercising that piece of ingenuity (for a nigerian media at least). Dont blame Mr Joe Average pls for patronizing out of nig products in any form. Its not his fault.

It is not wondering why People are patronizing for cheaper products. It was the excess of the country exporting them and naturally, it was cheap. If you have money, you would spend your money wisely and buy the Cheaper Products

Anyway, who is Patriotic nowadays especially crisis coming?
