     lalle mallam bash nice answer but truthfully, personally i dont like the idea of that cos its not following the tradition of passing the title to the family that is holding this status. Then again everyone has their own view on this but wat do you think?????????

well it should be for those that inherit it, but as you said they are presently buying it which goes to show that anyone who has the money can get into sarauta n wen you think about it, it aint right.

As your thought comes across this matter, I think you are supposed to advise those(sarauta buyers) people. They should desist from this act, isn't that true?

Sarauta buying (to borrow Muhsin's quaint and exotic terminology  ) is not confined to the north of Nigeria or to Nigeria either. It is also an age old phenomenon.
With respect to Nigeria, the title of chief has now become so common place that it has lost its cachet of being an aristocratic title. Now every tomcat with money can buy a chieftaincy and be called a 'Shif' and a lot  of these tomcats were sewer rats b4 they muscled their way to the money........
I think in pre twentieth century England,  Knighthoods and baronetcies could  be bought by those who could afford them. Nowadays, knighthoods are conferred to persons who were deemed to have served England or the commonwealth in some national or international capacity.

Come to think of it, I think it is a good idea to be able to buy a title. But not the Nigerian way. What I mean about the Nigerian way is that many of our 'nouveau riche - nouveau aristocrats' acquired their wealth in a questionable way. So although society may look up to them because they are rich, deep down, you cant really label them as honorable ppl, and I think sarauta titles are supposed to distinguish the honor of a house or something like that. So in effect, those who buy titles in Nigeria are diminishing the mystique and aura that surrounds the title.

However, if your money was obtained from the labour of yr back, yr muscles or yr brain, then I think getting a title is like  patting yrself on the back for making yr worldly life worthwhile in the worldly sense, and there is no better  way to announce to the world your worth than by becoming a Dan matawallen, Madugun, Zannan, Dan Isan, or even Talban Kano online (dont you think so admin?         ).

well.........Amira the truth is that, the act of buying sarauta is very wrong. but as it is with every other aspect of our life, corruption has penetrated the royal houses. but again looking at it from another perspective, it's a way of sourcing revenue, afterall the title(S) been sold are mainly created for that purpose.

What makes it 'very wrong' pray? Its not a divine right, those who have it are not any better than those who dont have it. Infact what is wrong about it is that it should be hereditary, because so many of those who inherit a title have done nothing to deserve it.

....... And the Emir of Katsina ( Allah shi kara masa Imani) sold sarauta to the disgraced former governor of Bayelsa state.
It happens so quite often that I doubt if any of the politicos (like Aminu Masari) getting titles today deserve it at all. The closest thing to this shameful perversion of culture and history is the tastless award of dcotorate degrees to narcisists (like Kwankwaso and Sani Yerima).
Nigeria is so messed up that anything of value conceivable could be bought or sold...... for a price of course!

Wallahi kuwa!!!!
To my way of thinking, gara a saida sarauta da a sai da mukamin ilimi. Tunda that is the real fraudulence. Shi mukamun ilimi, one has to work towards getting it, whereas  sarauta is an accident of birth and has nothing to do with ability.
