Some of us have always said this and it is taking us the new economic collapse of the north to have a northern governor to tell his colleagues.  I hope we are listening so that we put aside our religious agitation and look strive for economic growth, justice and development in the north.  Kano state that has been a front leader not just in the north but in nigeria, in this area has become the worst example of aspects of economic growth, justice and development in nigeria.  To those who can remember the 70's for instance in the music industry, kano state had a band called Kano Metropolitant Band then headed by the late Bala Miller.  The band had men and women of northern descent who learnt different trades in the music industry.  They were constantly invited around the world to give performances and were hailed by alot of countries for their performances, at the same time members whom were ordinary citizens of the north and kano in particular had a source of lifelihood with which to send members of their families to school etc.  Today we as Kano state are the highest producers of almajirais!!!!!  This story below was culled from Thisday Newspaper of 09.11.08

Babangida Aliyu: Obasanjo Vindicated over Sharia
From Imam Imam in Gusau, 11.09.2008

Governor Muazu Babangida Aliyu of Niger State has said that the  implementers of the Sharia legal system in some states of the North has vindicated former President Olusegun Obasanjo who once remarked that the legal system introduced for political purposes would eventually fade away from the country.
Speaking at a dinner organised in his honour by Zamfara State Government in Gusau on Friday night, Aliyu said those charged with the implementation of the code have only justified Obasanjo's assertion and that the advent of the Sharia's system worsened the northern states economically.
According to him, instances from the last few years have shown that the Islamic legal code was introduced to achieve political goals, and that the high level of moral bankruptcy among those in authority in the Sharia-implementing states have rubbished all claims that they were serving the people in the name of God.
Speaking in Hausa, Aliyu said despite the adoption of the Sharia system in many states in the North, elected officials have abused the trusts reposed on them by the electorate, a situation that has made the region poorer than what it was before the advent of Sharia.
He said taking a sectoral look, the Sharia implementing states are today the poorest in the federation, a situation he said has made their southern counterparts to refer to them as Almajiris.
"Sharia has mandated us to seek knowledge, but how many of our children are in school today? Every where you turn people say there is Sharia, but where is it? We all criticised Obasanjo for his remarks in the past, but has it not come to pass? It is time we stopped this hypocrisy and face the reality of what is happening to our people.
"It is a pity today the situation that the North has found itself. But all hope is not lost. We have the means, the ability, and the wherewithal to move our region and our country forward. If we put our acts together, no idiot can call us parasites again. That is possible and that is what we will do," he said.
He admonished members of the public to be God-fearing, saying all leaders will be held accountable for their actions in the hereafter.
On farming, which he described as the future of the Northern states, Aliyu advocated for the establishment of more micro-finance banks to help small scale farmers with affordable loans to enable them compete.
He promised that Niger State would collaborate with states that make up the former North western state, which now comprises Sokoto, Niger, Kebbi and Zamfara States, to establish a fund that will assist farmers and civil servants in the states in boosting their productivity.
He called on all Nigerians to join hands and ensure the the Federal Government's vision 2020 plan is achieved.
In his remarks, the host Governor, Mahmud Aliyu Shinkafi of Zamfara State said the future of Nigeria lies in agriculture and solid minerals, all of which the North has in abundance. "In the next few years, the North will lead Nigeria in all sectors," he said.
He said despite the high level of poverty in the region, immediate past leaders have only paid lip service to the plight of the people, "but thank God, today we have leaders who are ready and willing to bail the region out of its myriad of problems."

Very thought provoking and very true in many aspects. Agriculture is the way forward for the north and assistance in the the setting up of hard working small farming units will be the best way to get this started.
It has to be accompanied however with a programme of marketing access, canning, packing and so on.

I well remember the Kano Metropolitan Band and Bala Miller. I hired the band to perform at the Northern Derby Racemeeting when I ran the horse racing at Kano Racecourse and I remember them also at Bagauda Lake Hotel welcoming the Trans Sahara Motor Rally.

Both the two guys' (OBJ and Governor Aliyu) words are on good track. What an indisputable fact, although its embrassing and mind-boggling. One might have already predicted that sort of thing to happen heretofore. But how one could do? Allah ya isa.

People were driven away by the fad for shari'a, thinking it would bring positive change to their lives. The governors, with Yarima as the so-called pioneer, started implementing it (Shari'a), all based on charade and pretex. People were then jubilating. BUT, those people assigned to execute it (as well the governors) are never that good, untruthworthy, who know nothing but enriching themselves with pub money. That led one famous scholar in Kano to 'walked out' from the journey before his demise. May his soul rest in peace, amin. During that very time, there was criticism from all angles. But the thoughtfull scholar kept quite. And he too was not vindicated, isn't it?

Either you like it or not, these poeples' action and inaction is reprehensible, damnable and condemnable. Allah ya kawo gyara, amin.

Think gara-gara ma dai Kano, where Hisba people do quite a work.
Get to know [and remember] Allah in prosperity & He will know  [and remember] you in adversity.
