The impact and importance of the GSM on the socio-economic life of the average Nigerian cannot be overemphasised. However, anyone unfortunate enough to have watched the infamous Maryam Hiyana video clip will agree that the availability of cheap state of the art mobile handsets have brought within the reach of the average Nigerian, a powerful tool with an equally powerful tendency for abuse. And Nigerians are indeed abusing it! Just last week students in a co-educational secondary school in a North Western state were caught with video clips of their images captured in the sex act.

The combination of GSM and cheap albeit powerful handset technology has helped not only in violating the privacy of many homes, but also in challenging the sanctity of many marriages.

Based on our individual experiences, should we regard the coming of the handset a blessing or a curse?

Well, you can always pass a law that prohibits the use or sale of cell phones with video/picture capability. That would could be a way to put an end to the lewd practise. But when you say hand held devices have violated the privacy of many homes, what exactly do you mean by that? I am not very clear about that. How this sex images could affect marriages like pornography, etc could affect marriages, I agree. It is an addiction that many people are battling with like many other addictions. But keep in mind though that these are mainly areas of weakness for men more than women. Men are visual animals. Men look a woman's curves, shape, appearance, face, etc and imagination starts building in their mind. I recall in one of my psychology classes, they say studies indicate that men think about sex every 7 seconds. That means by the time it takes Waduz to write his angry commentaries on the forum, he is also fantasizing sex with some girl he saw during the day. I didn't say it (please don't kill the messenger) psychologists are the ones that say it.

So in coclusion, you can ban picture phones, but what about computers? You can have more access to lewd sites as well, unless they are blocked via a firewall. The truth is, in this World, the best thing Christians and Muslims can do about moral issues, is to educate and find ways to help people struggling with powerful addictions and destructive behaviors. I am not some things can be legislated, especially choices and morality. This is the reality of the World we live in.

For every action, there is a reaction. Everything comes in twos. Only God is ONE. So for every good there is bad, for every virtue, there is evil. We can use electronic media to create goodness. We can also use it to create badness. The GSM handset is neither a curse nor a blessing. It is a necessity and a necessary evil. It remains for the user to benefit from it or lose from it. One point that U2 made though is that as believers in our various religions we should educate ourselves and find ways to combat negative addictions and destructive behaviors. That is the only way to realize the benefits of tchnology.

parent should fear Allah and give only matured children
GSM, exposing the little ones with such sensitive things
can expose them to so many things as cited above, because
this thing is becoming very rampant in most of our
private schools (secondary) were students, especially
ladies are in the habit of snapping themselves in nude
modes.
