Yeeeeeeeeees. TV lobers dis na our own. make we discuss extensibely about ze mobies we watch or books we read here. i go start.

I watch zis indian mobie: BLACK. Oh yeah i dig Indian mobies as long as it got English subtitles with it. That mobie almost succeeded in breaking ze record op bringing tears in my eyes but it didnt.

Zat mobie is off-za-hizzy. Amitabh Bachchan was simply incredible, Rani Mukherjee was slpendid. Ze mobie was beyond my exfectation and zey did it. Fls who habe seen it? lets talk about it.

Good thread, Muda. Just what I suggetsed to Husnaa and Fateez. Now they have a 'playground' as far as movies are concerned.

BLACK was a really good film. If you think Amitabh was awesome there, try watch Baghban, if you've not yet 8) . He's the greatest ever the indian movie industry has produced and I doubt there would someone like him. As for Rani, she's my fav indian actress. Like when ppl hate her for her role in Kuch Kuch Ho Ta hai, I just loved her acting.

HUSNAA

Gee I am in seventh heaven!! Film talk and Indian films at that . I am a crazy fan of Indian movies.  Funnily enough I dont watch as many movies as I'd  like to.
Black did u say? I must definitely get it.  I havent watched any latest indian movies in a long time. I bought about five though but i only managed to watch one called FAAN, with Amir Khan and is it phooja? Its no great shakes really. But it was adequate. I liked Dillagi.. very old movie, watched it in 2000 I think. I think I am beginning to prefer watching some Indian movies without  subtitles, cos some of the films that i watched minus subtitles, I enjoyed them tremendously, but when I watched again with subtitles, the dialogue fell flat on its face and I couldnt enjoy the movies as I did before.  Two examples... Najaayaz and Dil. I first watched them in 1999 I think. Then recently, I acquired the DVDs with the full works subtitles etc and the story lines suck in each movie but the songs are still to boogie  for!!!!
Who has watched Monsoon Wedding, Bend it like Beckham and  Bride and prejudice? I heard Lagaan won a Cannes film festival award, or an oscar for best foreign movie some yrs back??

Incidentally I just watched Lagaan last night.  It was an Academy nominee for Best Foreign Movie in 2001. I prefer the english subtitled ones. No use watching a film you don't understand what's been said.

Funnily enough, I havent watched Lagaan  but I have been meaning to borrow it and watch. I got interested basically because of Amir Khan, not a fave actor of mine, but I wanted to see the quality of acting that got it nominated. However, it was the story line that got me disinterested. Maybe its not so bad after all. Luckily the one I am talking about has english subtitles. So it will be interesting, hopefully.
Now how about the movie KANDAHAR?  I havent watched it yet. I am told its a good movie, but rather sad. Who has seen 'City of God'? I  watched it one time at an annual film festival in 2003. Very violent, but very moving. Who has seen 'Shindler's List'? Its an old movie granted... some 8 to 10 yrs back, but I count it as one of my most fave movies. I can watch it over and over and over again....

I watched Bride and Prejudice after I saw Ashwarya Rai being interviewed by David Letterman on his show. The story is based loosely on Jane Austen's book, Pride and Prejudice. The screenplay adhered very well to the novel, but the acting left a lot to be desired and I thought AR couldnt act, she was so terrible, especially during her grand speech by the pool side when she berated the English 'Darcy' about the superior attitude of the colonial British towards the native Indians. (I believe that is what it is, bcos I havent seen it again since and its over a yr since I saw the film). I think it was one of those things about knowing the story before the movie. That was a disadvantage certainly. At any rate, it was enjoyable really in a candy floss sort of way. You know light and fluffy and dont remember afterwards.

PS Lol the film was originally in English... why did u need a subtitle?? it was geared for the western market...

Quote from: "precious"I like wani tsohon flim din Amitabh - "Kabhi kushi...."And also Kabhi Kabhi.Ok I must admit its not the film I like but the song.Soooo romantic.
Khabi Khabi oh oh oh!! I think that is my all time favorite Indian movie for many reasons.
It is one of the few Indian movies where the dialogue was carefully thought out and well crafted. The scenes between Amitabh and Rahkee(?) Gulzar were just phenomenal, because when ever they spoke to each other after they had lost each other, there was a double entendre to each sentence. Check out the interview scene, where she interviews him on national television as a famous poet.
Then the music is to die for. I used to room with some Indian girls when I was at university, and every night,we'd fall asleep to the sound of that very romantic opening song/poem, when Amitabh was wooing Rahkee. It is still one of my favorite Indian songs.

Quote from: "precious"Isnt Schindlers List that black and white movie? If it is I tried watching it but the black and white made me have a headache.
Oh dear!! Sorry to read that!!. I think the reason why Steven Spielberg decided to have the movie in black and white was to enhance its authenticity; to really transport one back to that era. I have noticed that when I watch films in technicolor (especially the digital films that have such extraordinary clarity of resolution)if the films were of a bygone era, the atmosphere of the film tended to feel slightly false, because in my subconscious, I am trying to fit the modern externalities  of the  film to its ambience. Examples of films in which I experienced these effects, included 'the Untouchables' (Kevin Costner) and Warren Beatty's 'Dick Tracy'
But with Schindler's List, it was plain sailing all the way. Anyway, Spielberg is truly a great director, and because he is Jewish he put his heart and soul in that project.... I highly recommend u to watch it. Some of the best films made in the history of cinema were in black and white. I have watched tens of films made in black and white dating from the era of silent movies... 'Nosferatu' for example which is the first Dracula film made. It is a silent movie, but by God it is enthralling!! I have watched so many dracula films but I have discovered that none of them can hold a candle to Nosferatu. It is simply superb and absolutely scary.. So please do watch Schindler's List. I promise u you wont regret it..... unless u are of the view that the Holocaust never occurred, like Ahmadinejad, who is presently hosting a conference to that effect... He is just being tongue in cheek about it, in reaction to the fact that it is a crime to deny it in the west...  Absolute stupidity..which ever way u look at it on both the side of the West and Ahmedinajad

Didn't I say Husnaa/FAteez now have a playground?

I've been trying to lay my hands on Shindler's List for some time now. I'm so much interested in military history, and this interest has drawn me strongly to the 2nd world war debacles. I remember spending a lot of my time at the History Section of the library during my uni days. Have you seen Escape from Sobibor? You will like it very much, it is a true story. Probably one of the best holocaust-related movies ever made.

As for the reality or otherwise of the holocaust, for all we know, it could very well be a highly successful jewish propaganda. Or it could have happened. Who's to know? You certainly can't help feeling sad if you're a firm believer of the holocaust. Then when you look at what the jews are doing to the arabs, or how the jewish lobby was able to hijack and direct US foreign policies, one would be inclined to say "kudos" to A. Hitler for attempting to exterminate them :P  I certainly don't blame Ahmedinejad for debunking it. I would also do it, either just for the heck of it, or if only to needle US and the Israelis

Although, like most Hausa people,I grew up with sisters who think Indian movies are the best thing that happened since make-up,I'm no huge a fan of Indian movies. However,I did watch alot of vintage classics from the likes of Amitah,Amrish Puri,Dramendra etc (I know ,I know ,not sure of the spellings).

And ah,I did watch''Bride and the Prejudice'',which I must say,I don't see as much of a conventional Indian movie. It didn't push any envelopes, which I wudda want by the way,but it was refreshing. The story line, great. And it is ,from what I understand a remake  of Jane Austen?s much-loved and oft-adapted classic.

But I have myreservations ,nonetheless. For one thing, pieces of Bollywood conventions were not to be eintirely missed :there was a sense of the overwhelming attraction between the two leads, but there?s no chemistry there. Martin Henderson is terrible ? stiff and uncomfortable ? while Aishwarya Rai, though gorgeous to a fault to look at, does little more than flounce about and play the guitar.

The Indian setting initially seems clever, because only in a world where arranged marriage is STILL the norm would the conventions of Jane Austen?s world still apply. But why make Darcy American? This potentially opens a whole other can of worms that the film just ignores.

Ashwaira is one hell of a gorgeous chikalah  though*Lord, have mercy on my poor soul* .Well, her beauty made up for what the movie lacked.Hell, her beauty deserve its own thread, which I won't waste much time creating lol.

Wow...speaking of vampires, i think i have seen almost ip not all vampire movies, i just like the thrill they exhibit. Only lately martial arts have eating into the mind of director so much that vampires kick butt in horroh movies, vampire movies are majorly kung fu or action movies, though some still hold their thriller status like Dracula 2000. My all tym favs are Blade II (Nomek was just it),Van Helsing use too was inspiring, but the Dracula in it jokes a lot so he lacked charisma though he was still ill. My all tym favs vampire villain in recent films till date remains Williams in Underworld II, Damn he is merciless and swift, simply wicked.

Among some clasical vampire movies i have seen dat i still dig are; Don "the dragon" Wilson's Night Hunter, where will i get that movie sef? i havent seeen it for a while, another is Bram Stocker's Dracula with keanu reeves and Anthony Hopkins, Gary oldman and Wyona Ryder, i place that movie in same list with veteran movie Nosferatu. The last but not the list is John Carpenter's Vampire with James wood who was simply splendid.. he takes no shit who ever you are, then Valek the villain was one of the baddest dat ever existed, infact Valek grunts more than he speaks in the whole movie, come and see merciless killings.

Have any1 seen "Brotherhood of The Wolves"? its an old French movie, i think 2000. Mark Dacascus was the guest actor. The film is off-tha-hizzy, you just have to see it, it got subtitles.

That film had been lying on my manager's table for ages. I would pick it, turn it over and drop. I'm not a fan of vampire/dracular movies, but now that you mentioned it, I will try go watch it.

HUSNAA

I dont think Brother hood of the Wolves is that good. Mind, I only watched the ending on TV. I am not even sure if it the same film that Muda is talking about. Its a French movie isnt it? That is why the subtitles, and it takes place in the 18th century. If that is correct then i think it is the film. maybe I should get to see it in its entirety.
I have not seen many of the newer vampire movies, except Quentin Tarantino's 'From Dusk till Dawn', of which I saw the first movie. The second and third were not worth it really. I saw Blade I, but none of the others. I just dont dig the modern vampire movies, they are so like Muda said: kick ass instead of anything else. Nothing to tremble about.
When I was young, I had this excessive obssession with vampire films I would get all tense and scared an hour or so before the start a vampire film on TV. I would debate with myself whether to watch or go to bed but I couldnt help it; I'd just have to see the film. I was so impressionable,  that after I'd gone to bed, my muscles always went into rigor mortis out of fright. I simply expected a bat to scratch my window and metamorphose into a vampire. The tension would not let up till the morning light when the vampires were safely back in their coffins. Then I'd begin to feel better and terribly sleepy, but then I'd have to get up to go to sch.
I remember reading a vampire novel back then as a scared thireen yr old, and as it took me a few days to get through the book, I always made sure that it was never in my bedroom at night... lol
I have seen Escape from Sorbibor. Very nice movie and very inspiring for the jews. If only the Jews did what the inmates of Sorbibor did, many of them wouldnt have ended up as lamp shades soap and upholstery. I have always maintained that part of the curse of God on the Jewish race that manifested itself in the 20th century was not in that Hitler killed six million of  them, but that they allowed themselves to be led to their death like sheep to the slaughter house.  For example, at one time only one hundred and fifty German soldiers led over one hundred  thousand Hungarian Jews to Auschwitz... amazing. I always shake my head in wonder when I think about it.
Schindler's list is very much like Sorbibor. Only the inmates did not escape, they survived the concentration camp, with the help of what's his name? Schindler.. a very good movie nevertheless.
The Pianist with Adrian Brody is another Jewish holocaust film. The trouble for me was that I'd already  seen Schindler's List, so I really couldnt bond with the Pianist. I personally found it to be a rehash of 'List'. Its a very good movie, but I felt there was  a kind of deja vu to it, in the Warsaw ghetto scenes. This is because if a director was trying to be authentic about historical events, then embellishments are out of the question. Thus the ghetto scenes were almost the same in both List and Pianist (for me at any rate) even though each enacted a different human drama. I also thought the ghetto scenes in 'List'  were more powerful and evocative. The whole irony was that Roman Polanski is just as masterful a director as Spielberg. I think I need to see the Pianist again. Maybe I will be less prejudiced about it. It won an oscar for best film, and best actor (and probably best director) but I couldnt help thinking that a little Zionism was at play there. Maybe that is why I under rated it.
PS Roman Polanski wrote directed and starred in a vampire comedy movie called the Fearless Vampire Killers.. very nice very funny very watchable.. bit scary nevertheless :?

I have to tell u it is a nice movie Husnaa, u really have to see it, infact the french did they are best work in film making in Brotherhood Of The Wolves, not to talk of the movie was nominated for best picture, i mean u had to see the matured special effects the movie displays, the 3D slow motions and the clear sound, u can hear virtually the sound of every rain drops. Damn that is a movie.

It aint even a vampire movie u know, its about the famous french legen of the beast (which culminated in Walt Disney classi picture Beauty and The Beast, but then this is not a fairy tale, its a thriller with skin-cut controversies the will keep your brains working trying to catch the culprit.

Not to talk of the exclusive Mark Dacascus Appearance to increase on the movie level of Martial arts. They simply did a splendid job in 2002. and maind you its not a an all fight no dialogue movie o, the fight scenes is just not to make the movie a full thriller.

Did anyone see Mind Hunters?
