Assalamu alaikum;
Modibbo,

Based on what you have listed about the current JAMB result, it is really clear that our leaders have not taken the education of our students seriously. The people given the responsibility of educating our students have really failed us just as the students did not do well. I think the greatest responsibility for this current trend should be held by those who where given the duty of educating the students in the leadership position.
I am also sorry to say that this current trend will continue because the people giving the responsibility of education will never be hold accountable for these kind of shameless results of their handiwork. It is only when the people given the responsibility of education are held accountable of these kind of results that we may begin to see improvement in Education in the North.

The first thread I started here, "Hausa Fulani and Future..part II" partly addressed this problem, but the discussion did not go too well. I'll repost a link from gamji.com that addresses this question as well as the overall underdevelopment of the North:

http://www.gamji.com/amnews7.htm

In the previous thread, I proposed this solution:

QuoteRegarding educational problems in the North, i believe a regional body created specifically for this purpose (and under the auspices of the Ministry of Education), should be given extraordinary  powers to effectively tackle the issue at hand. Of course, sincere and dedicated professionals must constitute such a body; if not, it would jjust become another grand stage for bribery and corruption. In a period of about ten years, this body should undertake the following steps:

Rehabilitation: Restructuring and rehabilitation of all educational infrastructures, facilities and management. This task should be carried out exclusively within a period of 5 years.

Maintenance:  One of the biggest problems that separate us from the first world is our inability to maintain our infrastructure and facilities. Thus this phase undertakes the maintenance of the standards established during the rehabilitation phase, in a period of 3 years.  Of course, this requires money, which again places importance on the integrity of the body members.

Enhancement:  With the improved standards, facilities and infrastructures in place and well maintained, we can now bring in new projects and services, within the last two years, that will improve and ensure the longevity of the system:  educational technology, new courses that may deal with current realities of the world, guidance and counseling services.  Others will include teachers in services, media specialist training, etc.

I spent 12 years working in education in the North and it seemed to be going ahead when I left the Ministry of Education in Kano. I am shocked by these figures.

Somebody once said that the poor participation of northerners is their islamic belief, which i quiet diagree with,i think the main problem is lack of concern by our elders and poverty, our elders in the sense that in the southern part of nigeria u wil finds out that one man sponsored at least two people from his area, from primary up to uni level, and infact if u want contest any position u have to submit the list of those u have sponsored, and back to poverty, not many people will afford to send their children to school, and as such they prefer the children to stay at home and hawk shinkafa da wake so that they will get somethuing to marry the child uip.state's govt didn't help the matter as well.

Wow!!!
I'm serious shocked at this figures. I bet one thing the figures of young men getting married will be higher than these figures.

Tis quite unfortunate. But is lack of our participation really a problem or even part of our problems here in d north?

Even we who have passed through school, what is our difference from those who did not pass through school?

We are  not kind-mannered; we poorly manage our resources and cannot even help those who did not pass through school or the younger generations to acquire what we have acquired in terms of education.

Kai!! I think the school which our leaders  passed through before they became the DEALERS is what is constituting d problem it self.

DIS ILIMIN BOKO THEY ARE SAYING, NAWAO!!!!

I agree w/ Waziri's points. Shira I don't get your post.

Some of us seem so surprised and I'm not really sure why. What were we expecting? On the good side, there are ppl out there trying to do something about it:

Do you think we have elders in the North? All we have is a group of selfish and self centered elements. They don't have the interest of the North at heart. Rather they only think of ways to under develop the North.

The elders we have are only interested in pursueing their selfish agenda. The role Shagari,I.B.B. and the rest played in Obasanjo's re-election is a living testimony. Point of correction we only have greedy elements parading themselves as leaders. 2007 is just arround the corner we will hear the stories they will tell us.

2 be honest with u I am not shocked at all the reason 4 this is most of the people who r responsible 4 educating the masses in the north r not well educated themselves so what do u expect.

Yes we do have elders and we do have leaders, elders are those that don't have the power to talk, yet they can persue their own agenda whie the leaders are using the elders to manupulate what ever policy thet is beneficial to the society.
