COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AT A ONE DAY KANOONLINE WEBSITE?S ANNUAL GATHERING HELD ON 14TH AUGUST 2004, BRITISH COUNCIL, KANO.

PREAMBLE:

August of every year is usually the period where kanoonline members and administrators meet in order to discuss issues of social, cultural and political importance that are non-partisan. This year too is not an exception; the kano-onliners have met and talked amply not only on matters affecting the online family but also matters affecting the people within the country and those in Diaspora. It is significant to note that the main purpose of the get-together is: to articulate our common stands; an opportunity to put our thoughts together; enlightenment avenue for our immediate environments; and a cultural meeting point for the people within and outside the forum.

The major ideas, problems and matters being discussed this time around are both political and apolitical. The debate on the issue of the ?National Question?, website?s sustainability i.e. funding and the establishment of the computer users? group were deliberated extensively and solutions were also proffered.

OBSERVATIONS AND COMMENTS:

About two-third majority of the attendants exhausted the forum talking on the way forward for the current national discords e.g. leadership ineptitudes, political and economic crises and the controversial Sovereign National Conference issue, popularly known as SNC.

The lead-discussant of the day cited some of the reasons why the present democratic set-up needs to be restructured. And those reasons are not far-fetched from the following:

To reorganize Nigeria on how to work well, since it is categorical that it is a failed state where the safety of its dwellers cannot be guaranteed. The need for restructuring was therefore averred by the fact that the law, order and security that are supposed to be provided to the citizens by the present government, is almost nil; so also the subsidies, which masses used to receive on agriculture e.g. fertilizer, is no longer obtainable.

Nonetheless, other members opined that if Nigeria is to be restructured, there is still going to be problems. For instance, the issues of resource control and leadership struggle are sensitive components, which have to be exercised with some degree of restraints.

On the issue of the website?s funding, however, it was upheld that voluntary contributions from various people and interest groups across and even outside the country would be highly appreciated. Though the idea behind the financial solicitation is to allow the kanoonline website carry its activities effectively without fear or restraints, because the domain registration and renewability attract lump sum dollar charges. It is therefore a collective responsibility upon us to give a helping hand so as to relieve up the tireless and dedicated financiers of this knowledgeable think-tank. Other sundry matters being attended to are: A computer users group formed as suggested by the webmaster whereby the aim, is to allow the online members easy articulation, programming, data processing, projects, accessing and internetworking of their activities; the problem of ?Almajirci? (street begging), especially in the North was also debated among the members and virile solutions were provided.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

One: It was proposed by the lead-discussant that the best alternative model for the country?s problems is to go back to the modus operandi of the 1963 constitutional status quo-ante, i .e. a true federation comprising few federating units with specific sovereign functions, where each region will have its own currency/ legal tender, means of communication, transport, education, judiciary, legislature and so forth. This will drastically reduce communal conflicts. It will also give room for fair, just and competent government to emerge. Also majority of the members held that youths and students have greater role in solving the national problems. I.e. individual efforts and commitments are of paramount importance to national rebirth.

Two: Almajirci syndrome can only be eliminated if there is genuine zeal and commitment from the side of government-be it local, state or federal. Government should therefore introduce a strong social problems policy, especially on begging (Bara) if it is serious about social rejuvenation and reorientation.

Three: It was suggested that all donors and/or contributors should contact the following addresses: webmaster@kanoonline.com and iawaziri@yahoo.com for successful submission of their donations. And for those who are still interested in joining the computer group can as well contact the Chairman of the website at: auadamu@yahoo.com or the Webmaster at: webmaster@kanoonline.com
