I generally do not like censorship but I am happy to see two recent topics locked. Deliberately offensive and deeply stupid posts have no place in civilised debate. It is not acceptable either to treat forumites with whom you disagree as if they are idiots or to put words into their mouths or ascribe to them views they do not hold.
If you can't understand the points we are making it is not wise to publicly display this ignorance.

Thank you very much Dave_McEwan_Hill , We too do not like censorship but in addition to what you have said these and other topics like them, are not in the spirit of what this KanoOnline Forum stands for. They also break the rules of the forum... These and other topics like them will be deleted and if the member continues to breaks the Forum rules, we will have to ban that member from our forum.

I totally agree with Dave and Admin. Some people are just very offensive and that's not nice. People should know that this forum is to promote healthy debates, discussions, exchange ideas, etc no matter what the subject matter is.  No matter how we disagree with one another, people need to understand isues can be discussed intellectually without being over-sensitive and without being disrespectful. This is what Kanoonline stands for. And I really commend both Dave and the Admin for making this point known to all.

that is just a microcosm of what we undergo on a daily basis in our newspapers. Some have developed thick skins, some have boycott such medium, while others are battling to correct the false impressions and lies all to no avail.

Sister Husnna,
That is a serious indictment, and I as Allah (SAT) is my witness, I reject that totally. As as a good hearted person that I am, I forgive you for that unfair characterization. But let me just say here that I totally agree with Alkanawi. Honestly, we have been exposed to lots of demeaning things and inaccuracies in our newspapers while a few dedicated people try to correct the false impressions. This is no easy task.
So again, I join Dave and the admin in bringing these matters to awareness. I would extoll them as a matter of fact to go a step further by engaging other media outlets both in Nigeria, the west, and in the middle east in an effort to bring decorum to public discourse and opinon sharing. Husnna, I'm telling you some people just talk and claim a right to free speech. You and I both know that even free speech is not always protected. Those people need to be properly informed so they can change this offensive behavior of theirs. I personally will appeal to those people without mentioning names to come together and be more sensitive while expressing their opinions.

Dave, admin.
I respectfully beg to differ with you two. Pray tell Dave, what exactly was 'deeply stupid and offensive' about these two threads? None of the posts I saw on the Fulani thread there fits your description. In the other thread Ete posted a documentary about alleged Saudi-sponsored 'Wahhabi' extremist preaching in in UK mosques. Alkanawi responded with several exposes of apparent Christian extremism ( btw alkanawi your last two links didn't work). What eaxctly was so offensive about both posts?

Admin, please help me out here. What precise portion of the Forum Rules and Regulations stickied on this forum outlaws the content of both threads?
QuoteTo remind you: false, defamatory, abusive or vulgar, hateful orharassing, obscene, sexually oriented, threatening or profane, materials is not permitted. You also agreed not to post any material which will invade any members privacy or anything which is in violation to the law.
The highlighted adjective is the only that could be applied here in my opinion, but in practice it would be very problematic. 'False' is a very large and subjective term to use for disqualifying posts - I mean, anything someone says that one disagree with is false according to him! If we started rejecting all information that we deem as false, we would be left with a hegemony of one school of thought which defeats the purpose of a discussion forum.

Frankly I do not see even the slightest reason why the Fulani thread was shut down. Now the other thread carries the risk of future inflammation, but so do all threads about religion. Should all religious threads be shut down because of this? I don't think so.
