Northern states to return teacher training colleges

The northern states may reintroduce teacher trai- ning colleges to ensure that more trained teachers are produced for schools in the region.

Sokoto State Commissioner for Education, Alhaji Arzika Tu-reta, disclosed this while spea-king on the state of education sector in the state.

He recalled that at the last summit of the northern states in Kaduna, they decided to revisit the issue of teacher training colleges which had been scrapped.

The commissioner noted that when the teacher training schools were in existence, there were many qualified teachers who taught in primary schools.

He said with the lack of qualified teachers in schools across the various states, there was need to reintroduce such training colleges to produce more primary school teachers.

Tureta said when the present administration in Sokoto came in, it realized there were not enough teachers in schools, and so it recruited 600 teachers for all schools.

He added that a number of teachers already in the employ of the state were being afforded opportunities for workshops on capacity building to put them in better shapes while more students are given admissions to acquire the National Certificate in Education (NCE).

The commissioner said the state government was poised to take care of the welfare of teachers, adding, "we are trying to do everything possible to retain our teachers; we are going to make sure that they are given all what is due them".
