INSPECTOR GENERAL OKIRO Policemen attached to Ali Kwara, an ace thief catcher and Security Adviser to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Adamu Aliyu Moddibo, have apprehended a police constable and an army recruit for allegedly serving as  escorts to separate gangs of armed robbers.

Kwara told Daily Trust in Abuja that they were arrested in Abuja in different operations together with the armed robbers on their way to their hiding places. He said the army recruit was in his uniform while escorting the robbers in a separate vehicle. The army could not be reached last night for comment.

"The robbers confessed to have stolen the car, a Honda Accord 2.4 Vti.e Model, otherwise known as 'End of Discussion' from the house of one Dr. Kirfi in Abuja. The soldier went with them in a separate car to help them avoid searches at police checking points. When the police arrested the gang, the soldier intervened in an attempt to secure their release but after realising that the reasons he was giving were not convincing, he too was arrested. After a thorough investigation both the robbers and the soldier confessed to have connived in the incidence. The soldier said he was serving in one of the military outfits in Abuja," he said.

The police constable Ali Kwara said, was arrested while escorting two armed robbers in a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado Model believed to have been stolen from Aba in Abia State.

"The policeman was found sitting in the vehicle in his uniform with a gun pretending to be security aide. After investigation, the robbers confessed to have stolen the vehicle from the owner at gun point in Aba, Abia State. The policeman said he was serving with the Abia State Police Command," he added.

Kwara said since the all the suspects were arrested in Abuja, they would be handed over to the FCT command for further investigations and prosecution. "Arrangements have been concluded to hand over the suspects to the FCT Police Commissioner today," Kwara said. The policeman involved in the incidence told Daily Trust the stolen vehicle belonged to the former Chairman of Aba South Local Government Area of Abia State, Chief Patrick Onwuka.

"I served as security aide to Onwuka while he was the Chairman of Aba South Local Government Area. I served as escort to the robbers but did not take part in the robbery," the policeman said.

Kwara however, called on the police to stop and search any vehicle or group of vehicles moving with uninformed security personnel as escorts. He said investigations have revealed that some of the security operatives acting as escorts are not genuine ones. According to him, this is the only way in which some armed robbers can be arrested.

He also enjoined top government functionaries who have been assigned security personnel as guards and escorts to bear with the police in doing their duties, particularly while conducting searches at police check points. "People have to cooperate with the policemen to enable them carry out their duties of cubing crime," he said.

Am surprised that you attributed that incident with police salary earning. Any way, looking at it from this angle, I'll like to add, or tell you something about Nigerian Police Force, and that is; they are insatiable. I hadn't thought and never will, that changing the salary scale of police would call-off their penury lives. Ai abun a zuci yake! Allah ya kyauta, amin.

Lol Muhsin, be a little fairer on the police. just becos a salary structure has been announced for them doesnt mean that its gone thro to implementation ko? Well maybe they have had a salary increase, but is it radical enough to enhance their welfare? Have they got better housing? better education for their kids and better medical care? I doubt it. Also with this monetization issue, its hardly likely that a police officer of a junior rank can afford to buy off his living quarters. That is if it is worth buying at all, seeing that they live in like one room apartments or some such...
At any rate, habits die hard, so it will take time for the bad eggs to turn good if ever.
The problem with police recruitment is that the least level of qualification to become a police officer is primary school certification ko? Not sure, but I believe it is that, or at the most have a secondary sch certificate. Now these uneducated souls are the ones that become the foot soldiers or street patrol officers with rifles at their sides. A very dangerous cocktail. The better educated ones (university grads) get the desk jobs and the better pay. These uni grads are the ones who are more likely to use sound judgment on the streets and are least likely to let loose a volley of bullets at the least provocation.  So the solution should be to hike up the qualification level for getting into the police force. Nothing less than a university degree or at the least an HND. All those employed at secondary sch, should go to the police academy to get the equivalent of the degree or HND before being fully accredited to patrol the streets.
PS higher qualifications attract higher pay. So that should root out the evils of police assisting in the commission of heinous crimes.

Hajiya Husnaa, you, from all indications, seem to know little about the current police situation in Nigeria.

For example, their slary increment has been implimented for long. And, I'm darned sure that could enhance their welfare compare to the kind of salary they were earning before. Further, considering to other salary schemes of, e.g teachers. I think now, a police oporal earns N23000 to above.

You again talked of police recruitement. That is another gigantic problem attatched to the police cadre. If, for example, as you said, primary certificate is the least. And nobody without that would be recruited, that would have been better. BUT, ppl without even that are taken. You simply get someone's particulars and use them as yours. Thats what most of them do.

Sannan Hajiya, top shots of police are now worst than kananan. Do you know what happened during the preceded (or ongoing?) police recruitement? Hmm... another badaqala. One had to buy scratch card of N2000 before he can fill in an online form. Its recently reported; in every Nigerian states, only 200 ppl would be taken. But, in Osun (or Ondo?) kawai, 6000 applicants have had applied! Don't talk of Kano, Lagos and other densely populated states.

Ai abun sai gyaran Allah kawai.
