:( 13 Feb 76 was the date Gen Murtala Mohammed was brutally murdered by some disgruntled rather irresponsible members of the Army misguided by some distant forces of disunity. Although Late Murtala fought for Angola, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Namibia among many others, he had since been forgotten even in his homeland esentially due to the unpopularity of the couse he championed!

Part of the hatred that led those who carried out the dastardly act are still pusuing Nigeria especially the North. May God forgive Late Murtala and guide Nigeria to greater heights.

May his soul rest in peace, amin.

Thank you very much, Danbaffa, for starting the thread. Allah bless.

Lallai Max has contributed to the thread! He has done well, but we await further inputs before we call for more. However, I wish people would read Mainasara'a "The 5 Majors why they struck", Gen Obasanjo's "Not my will" and Gen Joe Garba's "Diplomatic Soldiering" before accepting what the village square pasted. The last 2 books are insiders account and not a compilation of percieved facts. Na gode Muhsin, background matters a lot in everything one does (it also shapes one's thinking). May Allah forgive late Yar Aduwa the Tafida too!

I disagree with you that Murtala Muhammed is forgotten. Perhaps the ideals that guided his stewardship of the Nigerian nation are not in the priority of our present crop of leaders, but the name Murtala will remain with Nigeria and Nigerians forever.

There is another book on the charismatic Murtala called "The Hurricane". He was a man of great contradictions. A role model officer for northern troops, then a one time secessionist firebrand, who ironically became a beloved leader nationwide.

Ikon Allah. I saw that book--The Hurricane, two days ago in Kano State library. If its that recommendable I'll borrow it when I get back next time.

Muhsin, do please post your thoughts on the book after you have read it.

Muhsin

Max,

Quite unfortunately; when I got back there I couldn't locate the book. It must have been misplaced or borrowed, I fear. But inshaAllah next time.
