Waziri

?A rose called by any other name still smells good? is a common expression in the western or specifically English world. It certainly reflects nothing less than the strong detachment the westerners have to names. ?What is there in it if I am called Frost, Wood, Sky, Grass or even something as irritating as Fiddle??  ?After all I am no Frost or Wood in the practical sense of the word.? He stresses. ?It is just a label, a tag, an identifier by which people distinguish me!?

This however is contrary to what is believed in the East centuries before. In the east even after the conquest of Islam, the pervasiveness of its culture and the prevalence of its ethics, name is believed to be a complete revelation of an individual?s personality, the high road to his/her reason, and a mark that has the ability of tailoring his/her destiny. In short: Names have TRANSCENDENTAL MEANING on and over one?s personality. No wonder in our olden-days literature we read tales of heroes where the heroes are named by birth after much disagreement and sometimes, violent clashes between opposing influences on the heroes.

This as aforementioned indeed is another reflection of the conflict that exists between the eastern and the western civilisations even at the level of ideology 4 centuries. With this post we intend to sample the differing opinions of kanoonliners about names. How true is it all? What does Fyne Dyme Queen, AbuMujahid, Fulanicious, Salisu, Lionger or Venom means? Have we all been living out our names, Ids or nicknames at Kanoonline or else where?

While I iterate that this post is not an attempt to ridicule or defile any noble individual kanoonliner. I also see that it is necessary that we should discuss our selves that we may understand ourselves hoping that at the end of the day we will come up with a complete thought-process essential for our use in choosing names and nicknames for our selves and our children in future. It will also serve as a base for making amends where needed.

My peace.

lionger

hehe lionger is my real name, in that it is one of my names. however, it is not my first name, as such this forum is the only place where i use it. It was given by the natives of the cameroonian town where i was born. frankly i have no idea what it means, but i'm sure it has nothing to do with lions, as ppl would naturally be led to believe. actually the correct spelling should be lionga..

al_hamza

well,

Abu Mujahid means
Father of Mujahid.

its an old tradition to call people abu kaza kaza in within the arabs.
like the Palestinian president. Yasser Arafat doesnt have a son but is fondly called Abu Ammar by the arabs

Mujahid might be his son
as such he kept his nick as AbuMujahid
even if he doesnt, as a nickname i guess he has a right since its part of centuries old traditions not self-created.

Ma'Assalam

Well thanks to Waziri 4 bringing dis topic up. (& Wazir means MINISTER)
In my own view i think names ar one of da hidden facts dat ppl ar unaware of or ignor it. Now a days, Some ppl or parent give the children nice fancy names with useless meanings.

Nicknames ar nothing as they ar just 4 fun  ;D  ;)

"Naming a child with a beautiful and honourable name is very important as the Prophet always choose names with good and beautiful meanings, even telling people to change their names if they had unpleasant meaning"

"YOU WILL BE CALLED ON THE DAY OF JUDGEMENT BY YOUR NAMES AND YOUR FATHERS NAMES, SO THEREFORE, CHOOSE BEAUTIFUL NAMES"
Sunan of Abu Dawud :- Hadith 4930

But as ppl ar lost in da fantasy world, u even find names like Talle, Laraba, Tamika, Rakisha,  ::)which doesn't make sense at all. Just imagine how it would be 4 some1 named "Hamza" (which actually means Lion") called on da day of judgement with da name "LION"  :o  ;D
Well it's all kool. lol :P ;D
