Polio vaccination is not a new thing to our populace – Northern Nigeria in particular, and the whole of Nigerian community, in general. Why are inactivated Polio Vaccine (IPV) and Oral polio vaccine (OPV) not given in conjunction, when it has been shown to give better protection? Both are given in Denmark and Gaza strip. Why is not universal? Asked Somupai. According to Eric Hoy, Polio vaccination, in most cases, is a question of cost. In most countries, the additional cost of using both vaccines could be put to better use purchasing and administering a different vaccine, such as MMR or DTP, in addition to the OPV. In some countries handling and administration of IPV is more difficult, so the OPV is used.
