Two ladies in their early 20s were yesterday arraigned before an Abuja magistrate court for allegedly dressing half naked and constituting themselves into public nuisances.
The accused persons, Adah Idoko from Benue State and Bucky Augustine from Kabba, Kogi State, were arrested at about 2 am along the Jabi expressway by a police surveillance squad attached to Jabi Police Division.

Police prosecutor Sani Yusuf told the court that on February 18, 2010, a police surveillance squad led by one Christopher Akaakuma, an inspector, arrested the accused persons for dressing half naked.

"They were arrested for dressing half naked and wandering along the street of Jabi, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 193 of the Penal Code Law," the prosecutor stated.

He said during police interrogation, none of the accused persons could give any satisfactory account of themselves or their mission at such early hour of the day.

When the one-count charge was read to the accused persons, they admitted dressing half nude in the public at the early hour of the morning but denied constituting themselves into public nuisances.

"We just came down from a cab and as we were about to enter a night club, the police arrested us," the second accused person (Bucky Augustine) explained.

Based on their not guilty plea, the prosecutor who did not object to the accused persons bail requests asked the court for a hearing date.

In his ruling, Chief Magistrate Ademuyiwa Oyeyipo granted each of the accused persons bail in the sums of N50,000 with reliable sureties in like sums.

He also ruled that the sureties must show evidence of means of livelihood and reside within the court's jurisdiction as well as swear to affidavits to produce the accused persons in court on the adjourned date.

The case was adjourned to March 9 for hearing.
