The article written by one Ike Anyanike as a critique to Abia state's government decision banning women dressed indecently from the premises of the government house came as a big surprise to this writer. I think far from being against such a moralising move, the likes of Ike who are feminists  should have given the governor some kudos for taking the right step in the right direction. Before I go any further let me give a general overview of the situation of women in the so-called advanced world.

Everyone today is aware about how womanhood has been relegated to the background in the so- called civilised world and how a woman is simply debased into a sexual object. Women have fallen victims to the bestial passion to which men haveabandoned them under the influence of subversive propaganda of all kinds in which the mass media play so tragically a painful part. Nowadays a woman's reputation and dignity does not come ,as it used to, from her possession of moral excellence, education and knowledge. Too often women of piety and learning are left in obscurity. Respect go to much with women in the showbiz world of immoral glamour. The name 'artist' and 'model' or a 'beauty pageant' cover a multitude of sins of incontinence and debauchery which are the very opposite of the virtue and chastity in which the honour of women should reside.  In this world a woman's face is much more important than what she has upstairs. It is this craze for beauty that is making an average occidental woman a slave of her looks. She has to look beautiful by all means, from  bone graft in Japanese operation rooms to increase her  height to the planting of silicone in her breasts to prop them up and make them appear firm , to surgical operations to change her facial outlook, the list is endless. The craze to stay slim has made the women folk in these societies die of diseases like bulimia and anorexia  from obsession about not eating in order to stay slim. The society has designed a stereotype for them which they willingly and enthusiastically adopt.

Moreover the dressing code of an average western gentleman is layers of clothes. He wears singlet, shirt, tie and a jacket; from his feet to neck, he is suffused in clothes. The unspoken though eloquent fact at least in this society is that, it is his brain that  matters not his body. On the other hand, a western woman often wears a tight-fitting frock to accentuate her shape and mostly with V-neck to expose the cleft in her breast or a shoulderless blouse and a tight and thigh-short skirts or what in Nigeria we fitting call cross -no-gutter (because she can only leapfrog with that skirt but not jump) To crown it, all she wears a stilleto-heel shoes that clink 'yelling' for male attention. She does everything in her dressing to suggest that she is the stereotypical sexual image or object the society has designed for her. Moreover, this dressing code tells  that it is her beauty that matters not the least her brain.

It is only imminent that a sexually permissive society like this can only breed carnal debauchery. The statistics of women abuse and illicit sex is frightening and has eaten away the moral wall that differentiates man from an animal. The Encyclopedia Britannica (vol.23,p.45) says ''of all U.S. hospitals, 650 specialise in venereal diseases and half as many sufferers apply for help to their G.P. or local specialist'' In the book 'the habit of sexual behaviour' (p.34) the p''3000-4000 infants annually are born in the U.S. with venereal diseases and proportion of deaths in the U S from these diseases is greater than the mortality rate of all other illnesses added together -except for t.b.'' The journal 'black and white' (no 380) reports: ''the annual abortions in the U S A exceed 1,000,000. 65% are due to free relationships outside wedlock, and 50% of this figure are of unmarried teenage girls''--adneuseam.

While  this absolutely sexist milieu is entrenched in the so called advanced world and women are happy partners in this subversion of their humanness, feminists, like Ike, are even lampooning attempts by a discerning government here in Nigeria to make  women appear like human beings. I agree with Shekh Turabi who maintains that a woman who dresses decently or veils herself appropriately is equal to a man for then it is her intelligence that matters not her sensuality or sexuality and she is indirectly telling the world that she is a human being not merely a sexual object. A woman must learn that her femininity is a hidden prize not something to be flaunted and abused. But when she tries every thing in her power to draw male carnal attention on to her and yet cries about being merely seen as a sexual object then she is trying to eat her cake and have it or simply shooting herself in the foot.

In conclusion, I think one of the tasks of feminists is to identify the root cause of female debasement, and one of the basic causes is that women are willing partners in the stereotypically denigrating roles the industrial society has created for them by celebrating beauty and nakedness over and above everything. However, when they learn to prize their femininity and develop a culture of chastity, that will most certainly erode the hegemony of sexism and will make them have real equality with their male counterparts.
