Dignitaries of international repute such as United Nations
Under Secretary General Professor Ibrahim Gambari and
former Prime Minister of Pakistan Mr. Shaukat Aziz are attending
todays northern economic summit.  Among other dignitaries
are His Excellency, Alhaji Umaru Musa Yar'adua, arewa's
business modul Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Nigeria's Maradona IBB
(not klines pls), Abdulsalam Abubakar,  Alhaji Atiku Abubakar,
General T.Y. Danjuma, General Muhammadu Buhari, Alhaji
Maitama Sule and dozens of other northern stars will be
gracing the occasion apart from all former political office
holders ranging from Councillors, L.G. Chairmen, Governors,
House of Assembly members, House of Representative, and
Senators both serving and former.

the summit will afford stakeholders the opportunity to brainstorm
on strategic topics as Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, Solid
Minerals, Education/Human Capital Development, Infrastructure,
Environment, Financial and Investment Promotion, Agriculture
and Good Governance.

It has been said that the NEIS 2008 is different from former summits
in conceptualization, quality of participation and projected goals.

I advise members of the forum to follow up the summit, then we
will discuss its feasibility vis-a-vis previous summits aimed at promoting
arewa in general.

Happy summit.

Hello all,

This summit, like the ones before it, is full of empty talk. I mean look at the honorable participants- Babangida, Atiku, T.Y Danjuma, what nonsense. Coupists  (Babangida and Buhari) and unabashed capitalists (Atiku and Danjuma) have nothing to contribute to the summit- simple economics (efficient division of labor requires the Military big wigs continue to plot their coups and dem Atiku and Co to continue exploiting Nigerians from their bizness interests). I guess they might as well invite ibliss as well, just to balance the characters and provide some entertainment..

With our God fearing governor judiciously utilizing the Oil windfall from Abuja on state of the art jeeps (to ply the soon-to-be expanded streets of Kano), no one can really deny that our economies are doing well.  I mean look at all the industries flourishing in Kano all due to the kept promise of the governor and successive governors to establish an IPP in the state. God bless our leaders.

On a more serious note, this summit will be a success if:

        (a)  The number of Industries in N-Nigeria are more than they are today in Oct 2009
        (b)  The number of employed reduces by even a percentage point
        (c)  The number of loan granted to businesses in region increases
        (d)  No political appointee earns more than a specialist in a state medical facility
        (e)  No political appointee earns more than a principal or headmaster in a govt school.

These are very simple yardsticks but I can bet my broke bank account none of them will be achieved.

In the meantime, pls enjoy the summit and dont forget to get fashion lessons from what the biggies are wearing. I can swear to you none of the honorables is wearing Nigerian made textile and they are going to lecture you on the need to invest!

PS: How much does it cost to host such a summit?

Cheers

Of course everyone knows its gonna be a charade. Nothing else. But I prefer to hold on to hope that one of these days, something concrete would be achieved. The most important thing is that at least the N-Leaders (for what they are worth), have admitted the existence of the economic decay prevalent here, and steps are being taken to do something. It may not be much, and they may, for all intent and purpose, be playing to the gallery, but I have hope that eventually there will be something. However little. What we should take into consideration is the fact that the northern nigeria cannot be immuned from whatever malaise Nigeria suffers, or is suffering, from. So there's only so much that we can do on issues like collapsing industries, unemployment etc. Governors may play with words like IPP and the rest, but I'm yet to see where that has successfully been done in Nigeria, north south west or east. Even the country as a  whole is struggling to find a way forward with respect to the NIPP.

Wallahi BKG ppl needed that bulala. They needed to be whipped into shape! Haba wai ga gaskiya kiri kiri sai a ki bin ta. Of course I know of the bulala and tsallan kwadi. What it did was ensure that ppl came to work on time, it meant that manyan maikata set good examples for the juniors. He imprisoned those wanda suke causing artificial scarcity of food in order to drive the prices of food up. He also made sure that mobile task forces routinely checked markets for price hikes. But u know what? He stabilized the naira and it began to appreciate a lokacin sa. The rate of the naira to the pound sterling was 2.5N to 1 pound sterling! and u didnt need to go to the black market to get the exchange; you went to the bank. You also couldnt take out of the country more than 500 naira, at a time when we had ppl making bogus import bills (I dont remember the name of the process, but we studied it at university I recall) and remitted money into foreign bank accounts under the pretence of importing goods into Nigeria.

As for the Buhariyya, there was an oil glut at the beginning of the 1980s due to a reduced demand in world oil and over production on the part of the OPEC countries. This caused a six year long decline in oil prices in which the price of crude dropped from a peak of 35 dollar per barrel in 1979 to less than 10 dollars per barrel in 1986. This economic crisis  gave rise to Buhariyya. It wasnt the consequence of any policy on the part of Buhari or his regime, it was world economics.

;D buhariyya indeed, i am beginning to smell something,
we will dig into our archives and know the position(s)
Husnaa held during both the 1st and 2nd period of buhariyya.

BKGZ, shugaban kasan Nigeria was not able to attend the
summit, he was represented by the Minister of Commerce
and Industry, Engr. Charles Ugwuh.

The President said there is the need for north to redoubled
efforts in the area of investment drive, especially in the agro
processing sector, solid minerals, textile and bio-fuel sectors,
which he noted are doing well in the north.

Amirul Muminun kuma said:
"A summit of this nature should provide us with a unique
opportunity for introspection and reflection, to examine our
successes and failures, to re-evaluate old and new challenges,
and how to meet them and to resolve to ourselves with all the
seriousness , sincerity and determination we could muster,
to chart the course that would lead us to the promised land".

He emphasised that planning, requisite infrastructure and a
conducive and stable policy and macro-economic environment
were ways in which business could thrive, and at the end of the
day yield developmental benefits for the North.

According to him: "The North was largely responsible for creating
the West African regional economy in pre-colonial times and for
bringing wealth and prosperity to millions of the citizenry.
Our past leaders achieved this great feat owing to the effective
mobilisation of their people."

The Chairman of CONSCCIMA, Alhaji Jani Ibrahim, who gave the welcome address,
Said:

"Our youths are unemployed and our workers are underemployed.
To reverse this trend, we must change our attitudes from selfishness
to selflessness, from suspicion to cooperation, from wealth accumulation
to wealth creation, from poverty to prosperity and from .leadership to
legacy."

He called on North to begin to tap the appropriate initiative and focus
on regenerating the redundant resources, most of which are plentiful in
the North.

President of the NLC, Comrade Abdulwaheed Ibrahim Omar, in his
speech at the 2008 World Teachers Day, said Nigeria was headed
for doom if the only sector on which the country relies on for the
building of human resources was treated with disdain.

According to Omar: "Nigeria 's development is not all about seven-point
agenda, "but is about only one major point, that is, education."

"In today's globalising world, knowledge is the number one facilitator
of development. In today's world, oil and gas, solid minerals and other
brick and mortar elements are no longer the decisive factors in development.
The most consequential asset and prerequisite for development today is
human capital".

He regretted that instead of improving the status of education, which is
one of the lowest globally, the Federal Government has not demonstrated
commitment to the sector and that of the teachers' welfare beyond rhetoric.

we are waiting for the final outcome of this summit

Our access to bank facilities is not being harnessed.
Nowadays, you need access to large funds to be industrialised and northern Nigeria does not benefit from the vast money available in the banks.
Even the microfinance banks created to give simple loans are not recognised in the north.
And our attitude isn't helping matters. We so much depend on the wealthy individuals to cater for our needs.

Husnaa the naira has been and s very stable to the dollar now. Since the introduction of the Dutch aucton system the naira has been stable against most international currencies.

I know. Its also appreciating, although the local yan canji always say the reason for it is supply and demand. I guess they are right, since that is from their own perspective and in a way very true since we dont do anything much to generate revenue except sell crude.

Its a crying shame that most of the governors have decided not to attend the meeting. Shi yasa a ke gani basu da interest din north at heart. What politicians do is that they do everything in their power to show the ppl that they care for their welfare. So showing up at the conference or what ever would have been a sign of how committed these governors are to their responsibilities, even if they dont feel it in their hearts. Unfortunately this is not so in Nigeria.

Hajiya mark my word, anytime anyday you see
governors (it doesnt matter if its from the north
or south) together - then it is something that
has to do with revenue sharing kawai, no more
no less.  and in so many cases, if they are sure
the president is not attending, to suma they will
start sending their deputies, because they know
they dont have any power to decide on anything
at the meeting until they consult their governor
who have already taken a stand before they even
send their deputies.

Don Allah ji yadda hajia ta daddage tana kare Buhari ;D So now the shoe is on the other foot, no be so? The irony is that other leaders can get castigated and should have no excuse as far as you are concerned. Na only buhari get excuse abi? Oil price fall, if you want to base that as a cover, started in the late 90s. But we've not experienced anything close to that hardship until buhari took over in 1984. And this lasted the whole of his 18months rule. The fact is buhari was handling the country like a banana republic. He was not in touch with modernity or reality. As for Naira stability, it is elementary really. Abacha did it, even Obasanjo has achieved that, and it is still stable presently.

DB:- You will notice that the President has rarely attend functions outside Abuja these days. The reasons are obvious. Ba sai an fada ba? ;D Kuma waye "amirul muminun". And you are right about the governors not attending unless the know the president will be there. Eye Service kawai >:( It is unfortunate really.  The are the Chief Executive Officers of their respective states. Nothing can be achieved or implemented without their inputs and/or consent, so they should have been the first in there.

Goga:- Don't blame anybody for our perceived lack of access to large funds. It is just not true. The banks are there. The funds are there. The issue is simply that of attitude (which you even pointed out yourself). The average northerner does not have the awareness, patience and resilience to go through those formalities. I remember when Alh. Kassim Bichi (hope I got his name right) was the MD of the FMBN, he gave an interview during which he lamented the fact that only the southern nigeria, specifically west, do actually access the NHF Funds. This despite the fact that billions have been contributed by northerners to the scheme. We don't even bother to find out how the scheme works, talkless of how to apply or access the funds. Same thing is happening to the SMEIES and the Microfinance funds. Mu sai surutu da complain, always waiting for the government to provide EVERYTHING for us. We are simply not enterprising enough.
