Assalamu alaikum;

For at least the last few years, it seems like every year we have an epidemic or outbreak of this dreadful disease specially and mostly in Kano and Jigawa States.

Can anybody responds to this as to why mostly Kano? and what are the conditions that make Kano more susceptible to this disease? and lastly what can be done to alleviate or reduce the occurrence of the diseases?

Thanks

There are a number of reasons why we have recurring cholera outbreaks in Kano. The most important being that the State can no longer provide clean water for its growing population. We can see how the MASU RUWA are proliferating and operating under very unhygenic conditions in all parts of the metropolis.

Secondly, the research and statistics as well as disaese monitoring units of the ministry do not seem to be doing their job properly.

Moreover, the knowledge to prevent cholera spread is not there. People are ignorant, authorities can no longer make people aware. awareness campaign is crucial and timely.

Many of us in the Academia and health will be most willing to assist the State Government on issues like this, BUT only if it is willing to invite us, listen to us, allow us tell them the truth but also implement workable recommendations.

But it is time to start putting our resources at work.

Just as mentioned before, Its the rowdiness and lack of hygiene thats making the situation worse.

I don't know this, but are all the hospitals well facilitated with medicine and other medical facilities? I heard many are being infected by Cholera. ?Is the government doing anything to prevent this?

Vaccine should be supplied and drugs should be at low cost to meet customer's demand. Plus the citizens should try hard to keep their environment clean......even if it takes the government sending police to watch who litters and so on.

I dont know, i just pray for the best...Insha Allah.

I agree with the answer given by Yusuf Adamu about the recurrence of cholera in Kano -- lack of safe clean drinking water. Most of the populace in Kano rely on water from wells. These wells are often dug in houses where there are pit latrines. It is easy for the seepage from the toilets to permeate to the water table and enter into the wells.

Further, the recurrence of the disease seems to always coincide with the Ramadhan period when people start eating fruits and vegetables in large quantities. These fruits and vegs are grown in extremely unhygenic conditions. If you live in Kano, take a trip to the veg market along Airport road where most of the vegetables are grown, and near NoMan's land, you will how the gardeners use the water from the raw effluent from various household sewage being used to grow the vegetables. Often on the bridge you will see the fruit sellers using the water from the river to wash the fruits!! The government is aware of this unhealthy practice, and choses to do nothing about it for years.

To alleviate the situation, government must further educate people about the needs to boil the water from the well before drinking it. Also government will have to enforce its environmental regulations to ensure that fruit and veg sellers do so under strict hygenic conditions.
