ALLAHU AKBAR AFRICA
By Baruti M. Kamau

I hear the ancestors calling.
Ismitta is titled, "Lonely".

Is she really desolate?
Am I the fragment of her comet?

Indeed, my name is Baruti,
seduced by the ancestors.
I'm a product of rejection.  I strive
for identification.

My religion - Islam;
I'm an exported brother.
Allahu Akbar, Africa,
Uwa is my mother.

Ismitta continues fighting.
Ancestors keep on defying.
Allahu Akbar, Africa,
the slender, dark girl is challenging.

Praise be to Allah, Ismitta
your're not alone.
Allahu Akbar, Africa,
my warrior name is Kamau.

Editor's Note:  This poem was originally published in Clifton Magazine (Winter 1988 ).  It is considered to be one of the most articulate Afro-Islamic poems published in Cincinnati, Ohio.
