Dan-Sokoto

Greetings to all in this forum. Like i had occasion to say in another segment on this forum - i am Dan Sokoto. As the name implies, i am from sokoto but presently in the midst of Kanawa in their forum. So, there is no better opportunity for me to clarify my doubts about kanawa than here and now.

We generally from Sokoto regard people from Kano as masu wayo, masu son kudi, masu dadin baki domin su samu kudin mutum etc etc. Wallahi, i one day as a kid, heard an elder from Sokoto telling a story that, when he meets a lady and she starts to speak and he detects Kananci in her intonation, no matter how attractive and beautiful she may be, that is it -that, he will take off, because he knows she could sell him.

Now to the main question - Please could anybody tell me what may be behind this conception or mis-conception by Sokoto people to Kanawa?

Dan sakwwato kaci mutumcin Hubbare. Ina zaton ku yan sakkato buka da aiki banda kurmuwa da gasa balangu?
Ashe katafare yanaiya cin mutum mallami?
Just kidding but, i sincerely think of people from Sakkawato as funny, unserious and wide mouthed.
I use to frequent Sokoto in the years 90-93 and I enjoyed everything save............. should i say the Dan Indo's of this world.
I for one respect the palace of Sarkin Muslumi and for that only, will not bash Sokoto.
say Hi to GOLOBO or GOJIRGO for me.

Assalaam Alaikun Wa Rahamatullah!

Wallahi, i am serious about the poser i posted. But let me share my personal thoughts which i expected somebody to ask me about.

I had the good fortune of living in Kano for close to 2 years. i stayed in an area called Gwale and was attending Attending Advance Teachers College before fate took me away to another field entirely. Kano to me was entirely an overwhelming cultural experinece, because prior to that, i had never seen such a cosmopolitan city in my entire life. The multitude of people, the business acumen of virtually everybody left me completely bewildered and ba kauye. In effect my stay in Kano helped me to dispel the misconceptions about the city and its people which a handful of kauyawa from Sokoto relay to their village folks anytime they come back from the great city.

Overtime however, with more interractions with Kanawa, i come to understand one glaring difference between them and sokoto people. Kano people are not as conservative as sokoto people and are more outspoken in asserting their rights than sokoto people. All these, i attribute to the cosmopolitan nature of the city, and generally being aware of the way of the world more than sokoto people, by way of travels and so on. Kano people are mostly into trading while sokoto are mostly into farming.

Finally 2 of my best friends are from Kano and in them, i have found friends and brothers for life. They have been highly dependable and great pillars of support for me and my family. For me, when and if i decide to add a second wife despite the mis-givings of fulanicious one of our active members in this forum, definately kano will be the place i will look for her.

Thanks Ameen for the respect of Hubbare and i urge you to also visit Hubbaren Abdullahi na Gwandu anytime you happen to be around Birnin-Kebbi. The village of Gwandu is just 17 miles away from Birinin-Kebbi on the way to Sokoto.

Ma'assalaam.
