Assalamu alaikum;
FyneDymeQueen,

While I usually do not like to answer a question with a question, I think in this case it might be appropriate...

What is the logic behind... ina kwana?
why the "ina Kwana"?....

What is the logic behind... ina gajiya?
why the "ina gajiya"?....

or for that matter,

What is the logic behind... what's up?
why the "what's up"?... and why not "what's down?.... or why not "what's sideways"?...

I think this is just a general logical language construct...

logic behind..... ina ruwan ki? ina ruwan shi? ina ruwa na?
why the "ina ruwa"?....

Blaqueen

hmmm....so whut is the logic behind "ina kwana"... where is sleep?

Ina ruwan ka/ki?

Possibly a linguistic throwback to the time water was scarce and thus highly prized as a commodity. Thus "Ina Ruwan ka/ki" could mean to infer, "why are you so bothered that you will put such a precious thing like water in it to make it grow?!" In other words, "it is none of your business"! This is a speculatively etymological explanation. However, I have a comparative basis in another culture.....

...compare the Hausa saying Ina Ruwan ka/ki  to "I don't give a damn". The word "dam" was Indian in origin and refered to a colonial currency of the smallest denomination. Thus when someone in colonial India said, "I don't give a dam" (later transmutated to damn), it means "This matter is so worthless that I will not spend even a dam on it" -- which later means, "I don't care"; i.e. it is valueless to me, or means nothing to me.

Sigh.

SHAGARI is the name of a TOWN in Sakkwato where former Nigerian President Shehu Usman SHAGARI hailed from.

Sigh.

Heyy guyz, u know this na shiga ukku stuff ...I heard its not even good to say it. My mom told mi its like, Daya is when a person is put in his mothers womb, biyu is when a person is born....so the hausa man when he is in some sort of trouble, he compares it with ukku, his grave. So peeps shouldn`t say that...I guess
