OBJ will get no 3rd term or sad term he should just go and wait for his death in his otta farm he has nothing to offer this country any more, he should just go home and rest. we are tired of his misrule and  focusless leadership.

I am wary of joining those clamoring against OBJ third term agenda. For one, most, if not all, of the vocal critics of OBJ's agenda are ex PDP people who, to the best of my knowledge, are not doing this for democracy to take root in Nigeria.

The biggest culprit is Atiku Abubakar. Shortly after sworn in office, he saw it fit to side with the opponents of Shariah simply because it pleases his boss. Later during the first term, he presided over the most shameful privatisation process witnessed in Africa. No wonder now that he fell out favor from the man, he was 'evicted' from his 'estates' in African petroleum and Intergrated Logistics services (INTELS).

For those of us who remember, Atiku it was who heaped all sorts of accusations and insults on Gen Buhari simply because he wanted to remain in office. Here we are today celebrating this selfishly ambitious man. I do not symphasize with him at all.

This fight against third term should be on specific issues. We want OBJ out because of corruption, umemployment, inflation, electricity supply, educational system etc. We must not fight him simply because he is not a northerner.

God help us all.

I really really agree with you alhaji_aminu on what u have said. i wasnt saying OBJ should not get a 3rd term because he is not a northener, never. am not a tribalist and i always try to stand for the truth  OBJ has nothing to offer this Nation any more so he should just go based on that , personally i dont think Atiku is a better person than OBJ they are all birds of the same feather and both of them should just go away cos they both have nothing to offer. Those shouting on top of their voices that OBJ should leave because he is not a northener should know that they are bigots and are not better than OBJ him self i know a lot of us northerners are making most of all these noise on OBJ to leave cos he is not one of us. that is stupidity and i call on all those doing that to stop we have been in power for a very long time and we have nothing to show for it.Nigeria's leadership is not ourbirth right and we should stop looking at it that way. all the northern leaders that are misleading the northern populace of looking at it that way should stop, all we want is some one that will take nigeria to better heights regardless of which part of the county he is from.

Assalamu alaikum,
There was pandemonium in the Senate as the upper chamber of the National Assembly yesterday rejected a National Assembly Journal containing a Bill for an Act to Amend the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Second Publication), which proposed a three terms of four years each for governors.

Assalamu alaikum,
Thirty years ago, Obasanjo visited our school (primary) and said we were the leaders of tomorrow.

Today, he still the leader.

He has finished his quota and our parent's quota.

NOW HE WANTS TO USE OUR CHILDREN'S QUOTA.

So what will you say to third term?????????

I believe the various agencies of mass media as well as majority of patriotic Nigerians are kickin against the idea of tenure elongation for these precise reasons and not  in any way "celebrating this selfishly ambitious man"(Atiku).

LOL

To me probably the most amazing thing about the whole 'sad' term drama is the fact that it only helps to prove the fact that Nigerians do not have faith in system of democracy...
i mean if the majority of voting public are against obj returning to office for a 3rd term due to his unpopular policies and activities then no one should be in doubt that he'd surely fail at the polls and all the hype about 3rd term and indeed the fear that it would succeed is really unnecessary.

I think Obj is playing clever by refusing to indicate his issue about this third term.Imagine Obj one day coming out and admitting that come May 29th he will no longer be the President and commander in chief of the armed forces of the fed rep of Nigeria! From that day all contracts that are supposed to be completed after the may date will no longer be executed, infact as nigerians are dubious,no one will ever respect uncle Sege anymore.
Surely after suffering comes enjoyment

Alot of Nigerians havn't had much respect for Obj for a while now...where have u been?
I don't think govt bussiness will cease to carry on if Obj confirms his depature or if he dies (God forbid) suddenly.

Pro-Third Term Lawmakers Get N70m Each

6th May 2006

By Paul Mumeh, Asst. Editor, Abuja, Sukuji Bakoji, Bureau Chief, Kaduna and Donald Ojogo, Lagos

For pro-third term lawmakers, Thursday was the day of fulfilment of a fantasy as they pocketed huge sums of money allegedly ferreted out of the treasury in a desperate move by the Presidency to see that the project sails through.

The largesse is a response to Aso Rock's perception that the debate on the constitution amendment was not going on well as planned, and that the outcome may be disastrous unless something urgent was done.

Saturday Independent

learnt that pro-third term senators collected N70million while their House of Representatives counterparts received the sum of N50 million to seal their positions on the debate and guarantee that they vote as expected.

The money allegedly channeled from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and disbursed through one of the surviving new generation banks in Abuja was said to have enlivened the camp of the pro-third term lawmakers.

Aso Rock was said to have become apprehensive over the debate on the bill at the Senate, which, at the close of session for the first week tilted towards the failure of the bill.

Disbursement of the fund was delayed until assurances had been secured that beneficiaries would not betray the cause, but sources claim that the largesse was doled out as a means of enticing more lawmakers to the pro-third term camp.

Scores of Senators believed to be in support of the third term had reportedly refused to make commitment openly until they had received the gratification, just as the house members insisted on getting their "due".

Money for the senators was allegedly disbursed from an office in the Defence House, Maitama, while that of the House was distributed at a popular hotel in Area Three, Abuja.

Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba, chairman Senate Committee on Media denied knowledge of the largesse, blaming the allegation on rumour mongering.

Said he: "I don't even know where the (new generation) bank you just mentioned is located. The story is being peddled by those who want senators to take a particular position on the third term. Those spreading the rumour should tell Nigerians where those for third term collect theirs and where those against are equally collecting money from".

Security has been beefed up in Abuja especially at the Apo legislative quarters and the National Assembly.

However, anti-third term senators also initiated moves ahead of resumption of debate next week to win more converts especially those still sitting on the fence.

Debate on the bill continues on Tuesday in the Senate while that of the Representatives is expected to begin the same day.

Meanwhile, intense pressure being mounted on Emirs and Chiefs allegedly from the Presidency has left them confused on whether to go along with the desire of their people, majority of whom are against the plan, or do what Aso Rock wants.

Many northerners at the recent public hearings at the three geo-political zones in the North vented their anger and agreed that the actualisation of the third term would cause chaos and possible disintegration of the country.

Apparently caught between the devil and the deep blue sea, the northern traditional rulers have been holding consultative meetings but keeping sealed lips on the volatile issue which has continued to occupy the front burner of national discourse.

Saturday Independent

reliably gathered that early this week, some first class Emirs and Chiefs from the three geo-political zones met in Kaduna under the auspices of the Council of Northern States Traditional Rulers to take a common position on the dicey issue that would not provoke their subjects. The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Maccido, who chaired the crucial meeting was quoted as saying, "it (the meeting) will afford us an opportunity to know the problems and interests of our people and serve as an avenue to discuss national issues generally."

Also, the National Conscience Party has accused the International Monetary Fund (IMF) of being the brain behind the controversial tenure extension for President Obasanjo. NCP's National Chairman, Dr Osagie Obayuwana, alongside other party chieftains at a world press conference said,"it would be recalled that Obasanjo has ruthlessly implemented the IMF-inspired privatization programme where key investments that represent Nigeria's patrimony have been auctioned off in dubious deals."

Traditional Rulers on Sunday, May 28, 2007, stressing that the step would enable them have an umbrella organisation to discuss knotty issues and foster closer ties.

It would be recalled that one of the resolutions at the recent meeting of the 19 Northern Governors in Kaduna was the approval of the Assembly of Northern Traditional Rulers to be established on May 28, 2007.

Meanwhile, some Emirs who are known to be close associates of the president have either kept mute or distanced themselves from the proponents of the Third Term.

For instance, the Emir of Zazzau, Alhaji Shehu Idris, has refuted a recent media reports that his speech at a meeting during the installation ceremony of the Emir of Gwandu, Alhaji Muhammadu Bashar, implied that he was in favour of the third term for his friend, the president.

In an advertorial in New Nigerian newspapers signed by Secretary, Zazzau Emirate Council, Alhaji Barau Musa Aliyu, the Emir stated that the media report was a calculated attempt designed to tarnish his reputation and good name.

Part of the advertorial read, "The Zazzau Emirate Council expresses its already known position that the Emir of Zazzau had never attended any meeting related to Nigerian Politics, least of all discussing the issue of the third term, since traditional rulers do not take part in partisan politics. The Council therefore challenges any person or persons to prove any partisan action or comment by the Emir or the Council on Nigerian politics.

"The said publications are false and perhaps calculated amongst other things, to secure for the publisher a remarkable sales, as they could not quote the name of the person alleged to have given the information after the meeting."

Indeed, Saturday Independent's investigations revealed that the third term bid would serve as a litmus test of the northern traditional rulers' concern for the collective interest of the subjects in relation to national issues.

Assalamu alaikum,
...............If senators' contributions to the debate on proposed amendment to Section 137 of the 1999 Constitution, to allow President Olusegun Obasanjo to extend his tenure beyond 2007, indicate the way they will vote on the issue, the proponents of three terms of office for the President may fail to secure the two-thirds of the Senate required to pass the amendment.
At the close of debate yesterday (Thursday), no fewer than 11 senators spoke against the tenure extension plan while eight spoke in support of it. Five others were non-committal.
This brings to 42 the number of senators that are opposed to the third term agenda while 37 have expressed support for it with about 16 being non-committal.
About 13 senators, most of them anti-third term, are expected to contribute to the debate when the Senate resumes in plenary next Tuesday.
The situation in the House of Representatives is also very gloomy for the proponents of the presidential quest for an extra term of office as they trail badly behind their opponents.
At yesterday's proceedings in the lower chamber of the National Assembly, the protagonists got the upper hand with 21 of them speaking in favour of an extra term for the President while 18 spoke against it.
But the final score-line, however, put the antagonists on a comfortable lead of 69 to the protagonists' 56.

Assalamu alaikum,

United States officials have confirmed that the White House is monitoring the Constitution amendment debate in Nigeria.

It is reaching out to Aso Rock to verify the alleged bribery of lawmakers to keep President Olusegun Obasanjo in office for another four years.

An extension of tenure achieved through bribery will lack legitimacy and will not progress democracy in Nigeria, State Department officials said on Thursday.

"The United States remains a friend of Nigeria and has high respect for Obasanjo, but his stature will be diminished if he gets a questionable extension based on this serious allegations" they stressed.

The State Department is swamped with petitions and calls by Nigerian third term critics who paint a dire picture for American investments and future oil supplies if Obasanjo stays beyond 2007.

"The scenario we are getting from prominent Nigerians is the likelihood of a country that could be so ungovernable and paralysed by strikes and militant attacks that meaningful investments of bi-lateral agreements may not function".

The latest salvo from Washington comes on the heels of another admonition from United Nations Secretary General, Koffi Anan, who asked Obasanjo to respect the Constitution and leave office next year.

Anna's comment was made after consultations with American officials on how to deliver the blunt message to Abuja without appearing as if the administration is interfering in the internal affairs of Nigeria.

"It was decided that Anna's stature will further send a message that the international community is not happy with events in Nigeria and that his statement may convince Nigerian authorities of the likely domino effect a third term would have on the continent", an official in Anna's office stated. A bi-partisan group of U.S. lawmakers are also pressuring the White House to get tough with Obasanjo if he prolongs his tenancy in the Villa.

America has turned down a request by Abuja to request Obasanjo's presence at the G8 meeting later this year in Russia, after Moscow said would not invite him because of the third term trouble.
