This is two questions in one.  After the recent riots revolved around the Miss World pageant and also the riots and upheavals before then, should Nigeria continue to exist as one country?  And if so why??  These riots are a sign of deeper fundamental issues whereby the Miss World contest and the article were just a catalyst.  The tensions existed beforehand.  Already our societies are not uniform.  The queston now is can we peacifully exist in one country whereby no group feels marginalised or should we let bygones be bygones and agree to disagree though a peaceful separation.  If the country should remain as one what concrete steps should be taken to insure peaceful coexistance without the marginalisation of any one group.

hey... the media makes it look north and south... not to mention the white media.. tryin' to stir trouble within nations who have the potential to excell....

the burning of thisday office started in LAGOS!!! heart of the south....

the fight in KD.. did not take place in the city.. but a remote place... poverty striken... there were a few trouble makers compared to the thousands who stayed in their homes...

the media never highlights those who helped one another christians and muslims....

so juss cuz a few idiots caused trouble.. dont mean we should split up... name one nation where people dont tend to have some kinda comflict??

hi,
I think Nigeria should stay as one and only one Nigeria, there's always going to be a disagreement between people, but I belive we should try really hard to live peacefully. I know that we have alot of culture mixed together and we like to hate each other, but nigeria is not the only coutry that have so many different culture living together. is pitty to see that we are all citizens of one country but we are hating ourselves more and more. Seperating Nigeria is really not the issue, we just have to learn to live with each other in a very very peaceful way. even if we seperate the coutry I think this little small things will continue popping up, sometimes is just jelousy issues. But officials need to do something seriously about this kind of issues, they need to be checking up on those press, and the horrible bad headlines for Nigeria is kind of enough, lets try and build our country back.

well,
lets continue the jihad of dan-fodio
but in a more peaceful manner
not the klashnikov or kauri da baka style
Jihad against poverty and jahilanci

If Nigeria breaks, the "North" suffer the most. We are landlocked, Sahara is encroching far northern states, Northerners have substantial assets is places like Lagos and this will undoubtedly be lossed, Chaos will ensue, we have no Crude Oil as of yet......... the factors are numerous.
I say Nigeria should remain one.

our economy(nothern states) was something to marvell at (as one german said) and hey we were the ones that fed the southerners b4 the crude oil.

i thot there are speculations of oil in the north east and north west... :-/

AND we have the greatest treasure...RUWA.. we shut off river naija... and  ;D...

south is always the one suffering.... biafara, more people died of starvation... june 12, people started gettin' hungry in the south...

plus.. the southerners arent really in love wit' themselves... they'll break up into thousands of regions and will juss cause chaos...
at least in the north we're more united...

and the last time nigeria was close to pullin' apart... Qaddafi said he'll supply us wit' all th oil we need...

so even when we split. insha Allah we'll prosper... but i hope we wont... cuz i got ties wit the south... and it juss wouldnt be good...

? ? ? ?
? ? ? ? Believe it or not my humble guest and my folks, but we were meant to be together. Ofcause there are always differences, in as much as there is btw me and you like wise btw different ethnicities and regions in every civilisation. And differences if not properly understood result to conflicts. dan Nija fa sai er Nija.
? ? ? ? The north are hard headed, the east greedy and the south, lazy. Well laziness might even be a comon symbol btw us. These may be difficult to agree with but are true.
? ? ? ? The Nigerian mind is generally divided by selfishness... and believe me, these conflicts usually don't start coz of jealosy, or religeon or anything more reasonable, but by some individual selfish interest. Most people living in Kaduna who actually know what happened will tell you the truth: The conflicts (this one and the ones before)were started by a bunch of jobless matsiata. Idleness is another name for evilness mind you. These people frighten other people from certain territories by terror, and go into homes stores and offices to steal, they are all out to fill thier stomach. In lagos, people will tell you same stories, about area boys and ajgunle boys going into stores and offices, taking accesories with them and so on. The same story goes all over nigeria where ever you hear a conflict.
? ? ? And mind you, never fully believe what you hear or see on tv, todays media especially the foriegn media are the most decieving demons of all. Always calculate information and reason in both ways, weight it in two dimensions, or else you will remain fooled among fools. I warn again, beware of conspiracies, both national and international.
? ? ? ?Besides, how many places in this world are we hearing of conflicts now and then. It's just the sign of the end of the world. And yet, that still did'nt tear them apart. we have srilanka, kashmir, timor, india, pakistan, congo and many more, so much I can`t list them all.
? ? ? ?You see my brothers, sisters This is the time we need to come closer the most, and understand our differences. This is the time we must stay united. If the Nigerian government dissolves...there will never be peace in the penninsula, things will only be worse, not for the norht nor the south. This Nigeria is just the much Nigeria that needs to unite and be Nigeria. Allah ya taimake mu. Ameen.
? ? ? And Nigeria we should be grateful, Nigeria is stable compared to our neighbours and other associates. Most of them are having terrorist groups and rebel groups, most of them get used to seeing war with real armory...praise be to God Almighty.
? ? ?I ask Nigerians to remain Nigerians for that is the best thing they can be...and not fairy tale, but if we begin to make one or two sacrifices, and the sacrifices paid forward to other sacrifices, before a quater of this century, Nigeria will be a super power. We have the potencials, what we lack is the mind. let us have it. please.

May God help us all. kuma Allah ya tsare.

AMIN... nigeria would be plain and boring if it separates... all the tribes make it maadddd interesting!!! ;D

and ibro..ur right.. troublemakes started all the riots.. and the media is quick to highlight "religion" and "tribe".. if thats the case, whuts up with the christians kiling each other in jos? u wont see that in the news.. only when it happens to be "muslims" and "christians"... hiss..Allah Ya fisu...

a friend of mine...christian northerner from Jos ...said, all the conflict has NOTHING to do with religion or tribe... it's poverty and frustration...
Allah Ya kare...

precisely! and watch out because Islam is the most widely accpted and most populous religion second to non in this world... you bet their are millions out there trying to ruin it, if we keep together, they will only ruin themselves. Let no one destroys the good Image of this lovely religion that was left to us.

Majority of the South energy now comes from gas which is in commercial quantity in Ondo and "AND we have the greatest treasure...RUWA.. we shut off river naija... and ?..."

I don't think the North would suffer if Nigeria separate, Niger and Chad are not suffering and Northern Nigeria has better arable land and Infrastructure than those two countries, but I think the south would prosper and be successful because they now have a better educated population, the south west and south east have an educated population comparable to European nations, they are bless with vast amount of mineral resources, Ogun state has more gold than Ghana and they would be self-sufficient in food, energy and ?human resources. The private banking industry ?in the south is now value at more than $50 billion.

The separation of Nigeria is inevitable the south have nothing in common with north, the Sharia has put paid to that, ?no nation can be run on two separate constitution.
I see a confederation of states happening in less than 10 years time, one part of the country cannot continuously carry the ?other on its back. Lets not forget that the north has had 32 years of oil to educate and develop its people to be self-sufficient by now.

I think the North ?would benefit from a confederation or a real Federal republic as they would be able to conduct their affairs independent of the south, like use Arabic script, support the Al Queda, become a full member of the OIS and even the Arab league, the would be free to be themselves.

You have to be careful what you say, but I wasn't yanning I look forward to some level of separation because of Sharia  going on in the north. I am a muslim like you but I don't what the Sharia coming to the ?south.
