Covering the Feet in Salaah/prayer

The free woman who has attained the age of majority is obliged to cover her entire body during prayer, apart from her face and hands, because all of her is 3awrah. If she prays and any part of her 3awrah becomes uncovered, such as a shin or foot or all or part of her head, then her prayer is invalid, because the Prophet sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam said:

"Allaah will not accept the prayer of a woman who has started to menstruate, except with a khimaar (covering)" (1)

It is narrated from Umm Salamah that she asked the Prophet sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam about a woman who prayed wearing a dir3 (chemise or upper garment) and a khimaar (head cover), but no 'Izaar (lower garment). He said: "The woman is 3awrah." (2)

In another narration from Umm Salamah radi Allaahu 3Anha who asked Allaah's Messenger sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam: "Can a woman perform a prayer in a Dir3 (a long and wide garment that covers a woman's body) and Khimaar (head cover) without 'Izaar (a loin cloth/lower garment)?'

The Prophet sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam said: "If the Dir3 is long and wide so that it covers the body to the external part of her feet" (3)

Covering the Feet in General (outside the house)

Ibn 3Umar said: The Messenger of Allaah sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam said: "Whoever allows his garment to drag out of pride, Allaah will not look at him on the Day of Resurrection." Umm Salamah said: "What should women do with their hems?" He said: "Lower it a hand-span."

She said: "Then their feet will show." He said: "Let them lower it a cubit, but no more than that." (4)

Al-Nawawi said: "The scholars are unanimously agreed that it is permissible for women to let their garments hang below their ankles (isbaal). Clear permission has been narrated from the Prophet sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam for them to lower their hems by a cubit. (5)

Shaykh 3Abd al-3Azeez ibn Baaz said:

"The point is that the Prophet sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam explained all that is good and called us to all that is good, and he warned us against all that is evil. He sallAllaahu 3Alayhi wa Sallam said: "Whatever of the lower garment hangs down below the ankles is in the Fire." Narrated by al-Bukhaari in his Saheeh. The 'izaar (lower garment), trousers, thobe (dishdasha) and 3abaaya (cloak) should not come down below the ankles; whatever comes below the ankles is subject to the warning mentioned in the hadeeth, with regard to men. With regard to women, they have to make their clothes long enough to cover their feet, because the feet are 3awrah".  (6)
