KANO sate government has been called upon to assist the Continuing Education Centre (CEC) Gidan Galadima, Kano to improve its functions.

PDP presidential aspirant, Alhaji (Dr.) Muhammadu Abubakar Rimi, made the call recently while presenting 10 sewing and five weaving machines to the school.

The aspirant traced the history of the school which was set up 21 years ago when he was the governor of the state, saying it was part of his government's effort to free people from ignorance, poverty and molestation.

He said there was the need for more of such schools as the present one  could not serve the increasing desire for women education in the state.  Alhaji Rimi therefore expressed dismay over the lack of adequate facilities at the centre.

Rimi, who spoke at length on the importance of women education, disclosed that during his tenure as governor of old Kano state, every graduand of the school was given a sewing machine at the end of training. He therefore advised that the gesture should be re-introduced even if on loan basis.

Earlier in his address, the former permanent secretary for  the ministry of education during Rimi's administration, Alhaji Datti Ahmad, revealed that the school came into being as a result of a report about girls' withdrawal from schools for marriage.

According to the former permanent secretary, Rimi's government then approved the establishment of this school, adding: "I hope it will be a revolution in women education." He said N80,000 was given to set a conducive atmosphere for the Married Women Education centre Gidan Galadima as it was called before, and finally the school took up in 1981.

Alhaji Ahmad then thanked the aspirant for the kind gesture and called on other well-meaning individuals to emulate Rimi in that direction.

In his vote of thanks, the chairman of Husbands Teachers Association (HTA) of the centre, Alhaji Umar Kaura, said the centre will for ever continue to recognize the contributions of Rimi to the centre recalling that he once, repaired the centre's electrical appliances. He then presented him (Rim) with a certificate of honour.

Highlights of the occasion included formal presentation of sewing and weaving machines donated by Alhaji Rimi to the principal of the school, Hajiya Zainab Ma'aji.
