Sir Alex Ferguson is confident Daniel Nardiello will return to Manchester United an improved player after his loan stint at Swansea City.
Nardiello linked up with the Third Division outfit last week on a month's loan, with Red Devils colleague Alan Tate joining him at Vetch Field.

Young striker Nardiello has struggled to establish himself in the first team squad at Old Trafford but has been a prolific scorer in the reserves.

The 21-year-old is following the well-trodden path of several United players, who have enjoyed loan stints away from the club to boost their experience.

United boss Ferguson believes it is imperative that former Wolves youth Nardiello samples competitive action, rather than continually playing for the Premiership champions' reserves.

"Daniel would have been in the squad for Leeds (in the Carling Cup) but it is important for his development that he gets more competitive football," outlined Ferguson.

"He has gone to Swansea, who are towards the top of their division, so it's the kind of challenge he really needs.

"We are trying to do this all the time, give young players the vital experience that Daniel is getting now.

"We have David Fox and Colin Heath out at Antwerp and Ben Williams has just come back from a month at Altrincham.

"Of course, Luke Chadwick and Michael Stewart are away at the moment, too. It puts them in an environment where they can learn because the Nationwide is a good league.

"It is much better for players of their age to play there than in our reserve team."

South Coast rivals Southampton and Portsmouth will face each other in the pick of the draw for the fourth round of the Carling Cup.
The draw was made on Wednesday night after the third round was completed and Harry Redknapp's Pompey will make the short trip to St Mary's to face The Saints in the pick of the ties.

Gordon Strachan's side disposed of Bristol City on Tuesday and their reward is what promises to be a fiery derby battle between the two fierce rivals.

Carling Cup holders Liverpool will welcome Bolton Wanderers to Anfield after seeing off Blackburn in a 4-3 thriller.

West Brom will face another tough test after an extra time victory over Newcastle as they now play host to Manchester United at The Hawthorns after Sir Alex Ferguson's men beat Leeds.

Chelsea's millionaires will now travel to The Madejski Stadium to face Reading while the Nationwide League's other representatives, Crystal Palace, will travel to The Midlands to face Aston Villa.

Manchester City face another trip to London after beating QPR in the last round and will now play Tottenham at White Hart Lane.

Arsenal are again drawn at home but will this time play Premiership opposition in the form of Wolves, while Middlesbrough and Everton will do battle at The Riverside.

Manchester United keeper Fabien Barthez looks set to be forced to stay in the football wilderness until January, as reports are saying Fifa will block the Frenchman's loan move to Marseille.
The two clubs have already agreed on a loan move, as l'OM need cover for Vedran Runje following a serious injury to Cedric Carasso.

Marseille needed Fifa to ratify the deal as it falls outside of the period allowed for transfers, but were confident the world's governing body would rubber stamp the move.

However, it is being reported on Sky Sports News that Fifa have decided to block the move, which would force Barthez to wait until January before being allowed to represent Marseille.

Fifa have confirmed that an official announcement will be made on Friday, after their officials came to a decision on Thursday.

"The Barthez case has been dealt with. A decision has been reached and it will be notified to the parties on Friday afternoon," a Fifa spokesman said on Thursday.

It is believed that Barthez, who has already been training with Marseille, will not get the chance to re-start his Championnat career immediately.

Barthez is well down the pecking order at Old Trafford, with Tim Howard firmly in control of the number one jersey, so a move to France appealed to the keeper who has one eye firmly on next summer's European Championships.

The news, if confirmed, is unlikely to go down well with officials at Stade Velodrome, as the decision will leave them without experienced cover for Runje.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is fuming as he feels a deal was done between Arsenal and The Football Association ahead of the London club's disciplinary hearing on Thursday.
The Scot believes Arsenal will be "delighted" with the verdict, and stressed that he would go through the proper channels regarding the cases involving Cristiano Ronaldo and Ryan Giggs for their involvement in the ugly spat at the end of the goalless draw at Old Trafford.

"I wouldn't agree that the punishment was fair," complained Ferguson. "I think Arsenal will be delighted with the decision, that's without question.

"I read this morning they did a deal before they went in there and I think that was the suspicion right throughout the country that a deal was being done.

"It's disappointing to read that kind of thing."

The Red Devils manager has problems of his own with the authorities regarding Ronaldo and Giggs, plus the high-profile Rio Ferdinand case. However, he will not be seeking to do a deal with The FA.

"We have won titles before without those sort of procedures," he added. "We don't have that benefit and we will go and carry on the way we do.

"Rio is not enjoying it, obviously, but his one saving grace is that he has got a football game to look forward to, at the moment."

The date has been set for Manchester United's fourth round Carling Cup tie away to West Bromwich Albion.

The game will be played on Wednesday 3 December and will kick off at 20:00GMT. The match will be shown live on Sky.

The two sides were drawn out of the hat together this week, following Albion's surprise extra-time win at Newcastle in the third round. United won 3-1 on their last visit to The Hawthorns, in January, en route to winning the Premiership title.

The best Carling Cup tie this Wednesday night was arguably the seven-goal thriller between Blackburn Rovers and Liverpool at Ewood Park; the competition holders edged it 4-3 in normal time thanks to Emile Heskey (2), Harry Kewell and Danny Murphy. Ex-United striker Dwight Yorke grabbed two for Rovers.

Aston Villa and Everton won the other all-Premiership ties, beating Leicester City and Charlton Athletic respectively. Chelsea defeated Notts County 4-2 at Stamford Bridge, while Middlesbrough won 2-1 at First Division high flyers Wigan.

The other two ties on Wednesday went into extra-time, resulting in victories for Portsmouth (at Nottingham Forest) and Spurs (at home to West Ham).

The eight fourth round matches, including West Brom v United, will be played on December 2 or 3.

Manchester United striker Diego Forlan is delighted with his recent run of form and hopes to continue it against arch rivals Liverpool on Sunday.
The Uruguayan international was a figure of fun after his initial move from Independiente for his lack of goals.

A trip to Anfield will hold good memories for Forlan however, as he grabbed two goals in the fixture last season, although most of the credit for them must go down to Reds keeper Jerzy Dudek.

A run of just three goals in 23 games had gone before the trip to Merseyside, and Forlan is looking forward to a return.

"The Liverpool game last season was a great day for me," said Forlan.

"And it's good to hear the fans sing that song about me. They have always supported me.

"But you can't live in the past and Sunday is a new game."

Despite his Anfield brace, Forlan failed to build on that double and has still been struggling to score until his recent blast of four goals from four games.

Sir Alex Ferguson says that he can now not leave Forlan out of the side and he is delighted to finally be hitting the target.

"The last two weeks have been beautiful and now I just want to keep the run going.

"It's nice the people are saying these things about me. When you here the manager say he can't leave you out, it is a big boost.

"It is always a lift to your confidence when you start a game. And the more you play, the more confident and sharper you get.

"Before this run of games I was wondering whether I would ever get into the team because there are so many good players here."

Forlan got his chance in the side due to injuries to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Paul Scholes but has not looked back since embarking on his goalscoring run.

He will be looking to repeat the dose against Liverpool, who have just started to recover from a slow start to the season.

Forlan will be confident going into the match after another good strike against Rangers on Tuesday and while The Reds have been showing signs of recovery from a slow start to the season, a tough away day at Steaua Bucharest on Thursday will not help their preparations.

Manchester United were at their imperious best as they brushed aside Rangers with a comfortable 3-0 victory at Old Trafford in their Group E UEFA Champions League clash.

Diego Forlan opened the scoring before a brace from Dutch master Ruud van Nistelrooy sealed victory.
The first came after just six minutes and was United's first major push on the Rangers goal.

Captain Roy Keane crossed the ball in from the right and Michael Ball cleared, but his header fell straight to Forlan and the Uruguayan lashed home a great volley from 18 yards.

United continued to press and often counter-attacked using the pace of Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo - who was a constant menace on the night.

Rangers hardly pushed forward, but they did have a great chance to level on 18 minutes when Ball's hopeful looking ball caught United's defence flat-footed, but Michael Mols could only toe-poke the ball wide with his right when a left footed effort would have enabled an easier chance.

Ryan Giggs then had a good effort cleared off the line by Craig Moore, after Keane had put the Welshman clear.

United doubled their advantage just before half time through van Nistelrooy, but it was rather fortuitous for the Dutchman.

Ronaldo again caused the problems and his cross was knocked down by Giggs for Forlan, who turned and smashed his effort off the crossbar - the ball then came down and struck van Nistelrooy and cannoned into the back of Stefan Klos's net.

The second half started brightly for the home side and van Nistelrooy blasted across the area - firing a warning of what was to come.

The impressive Ball did his best to bring his side back into the game and his swerving free kick on 52 minutes - which tested Tim Howard - was his side's best effort of the game.

Ball blasted another effort over, just before United added their third and it came from a Giggs free kick on the right which he curled superbly into the six-yard area and van Nistelrooy was on hand to tap home from close range.

Van Nistelrooy then had two efforts saved by Klos in the space of a minute, the latter a great tip over when it looked as if he had been lobbed.

United introduced the likes of Kleberson, David Bellion and Darren Fletcher to add to their European experience and the game ebbed away.

Rangers were happy not to concede again and United always knew they were not going to be deprived of a clean sheet with Rio Ferdinand and Mikael Silvestre in commanding form at the heart of the home side's defence.

The Football Association have written to Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson to explain his comments over their handling of Arsenal's recent misconduct charges.
The United chief hinted that he thought a deal had been struck between The FA and Arsenal over the battle at Old Trafford in September.

Arsenal were hit with a hefty fine and a string of suspensions following their part in the infamous goalless draw with Manchester United and Ferguson intimated that The Gunners agreed a deal with The FA over the punishment meted out.

The FA confirmed that they would launch a full investigation into Ferguson's comments and now they have asked the Scot to explain his comments before taking any further action.

"These comments appear to raise issues about the integrity and impartiality of The FA's disciplinary processes," read a statement from The FA.

"Additionally, The FA has written to Manchester United FC to request their explanation as to whether these comments reflect the club's official position on the matter.

"Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester United have been given until 11th November to respond

FA go to war with Fergie
Angry FA bosses have stepped up their war with Manchester United by demanding to know if the club back Alex Ferguson’s latest outburst. The United manager has been given until Tuesday to explain his recent claim that Arsenal struck a deal with the FA’s disciplinary committee. He claimed: “I read Arsenal did a deal with the FA before they went in there and I think that was the suspicion throughout the country. Arsenal will be delighted with the decision. “It’s obvious they’ve been doing deals for years.” Now the FA have raised the stakes, with a spokesman last night confirming: “Alex Ferguson’s comments appear to raise issues about the integrity and impartiality of the FA’s disciplinary processes. We have also written to Manchester United to request their explanation as to whether these comments reflect the club’s official position on the matter.”

Van needs double act to hit top gear
Ruud van Nistelrooy has warned he cannot single-handedly carry the burden of firing Manchester United to Champions League glory. The Dutchman said: "We need to have more than one striker scoring if we are going to win the Champions League. But I think my partnership with Diego can flourish. He is on a great run at the moment, having scored four goals in four games and they have been of real importance to us. It is great to see him doing so well. He had a hard time at the beginning of the season when he did not play much and all of a sudden he has been thrown in. He has got his rhythm and confidence going and he can be great value to us. We can do well together. Our games fit with each other and hopefully it will lead to more goals, especially in Europe."

United ?20m striker fund
Sir Alex Ferguson has been given the go-ahead to spend up to ?20million on a striker when the transfer window opens in January. The Manchester United manager watched his side move within a point of reaching the last 16 of the Champions League with goals from Ruud van Nistelrooy and Diego Forlan during the 3-0 victory over Rangers on Tuesday night. But the Old Trafford hierarchy recognise the need for another top-class striker who can become Van Nistelrooy's permanent partner in the United attack. Finding one could prove difficult, however, especially one who would be available to United for the knockout stages of the Champions League. Fulham's Louis Saha could be an option, as could West Ham's Jermaine Defoe. Rafael van der Vaart is unlikely to be available before next summer.

It is apt that Thierry Henry should receive the Arsenal fans' highest mark of approval before Saturday's North London derby.

The flying French forward is the Arsenal.com Player of the Month for October and will receive his trophy from lucky competition winner, Andy Moore from Hampshire, before the game with Tottenham.

Last season, Henry produced one of the greatest goals ever seen in a North London derby; running more than half the length of the pitch before planting his shot past Kasey Keller. His manager Ars?ne Wenger believes it was one of Henry's very best.

"It has come to be seen as one of his greatest goals," said the manager on Friday. "It is an individual goal of exceptional quality.

"He took the ball from of the edge of our box and then went and scored on the other side of the pitch. That takes a special talent. In terms of individual goals it is one of the greatest I have seen."

Wenger backed the view of Arsenal.com visitors, as he did over the awards to Kolo Toure in August and September.

"Thierry is in good form," said the manager. "Even on Wednesday night against Kyiv when he did not score he created three or four clear-cut chances so confidence-wise he is in great shape.

"Sometimes I feel I should rest him but he is still young and he has a natural potential to repeat the sprints he makes again and again so it is very difficult to do it."
