I was on my way home from the office
when a soldier on patrol halt me to a stop.
He asked me from where? I told him from
the office.  He was surprised and replied
Government work by this hour? I looked at
him and said; whose work are you doing?
are you not working for the same government
I work for? 

He asked me what I was carrying in my car,
i told him nothing. 

Systematically, he whispered on my ear that
i should do something for him.  I became so
ashamed of myself and wondered why
the police virus is fast spreading to the military.
I gave him N50.00 and he cleared the road for
me without checking my car.

I logged on to k-online, saw this thread and decided to post on it!

You know one wants to have money and power in this world quite forgetting the reckoning that one has to go thro later on. Deaths like this pull one down to earth and make u take stock of what is really important in life.

Now, let me see. I have two larger than life teenage daughters. One wanted The Princes Diaries DVD -- you know, one of those megapack DVDs with about 9 movies. Got one too with 12 movies on it -- the 3 Mission Impossibles; 3 Blades, 2 Bourne Identities and 4 Lethal Weapons The other (in second year at the university studying computer science) wants a megapack Rap DVD (containing over 60 videos of rap artistes). Got the three DVDs for 1,500 naira. Then the jambite phoned to remind me to get her Nite of One Thousand Laughs CD. Dunno know what that is -- it seems to be a Nigerian stand-up comedy thing; there are 11 of the CDs; bought one (Vol. 4). On cue, the junior one also phoned to say she wants Grey's Anatomy TV series DVD. Sigh. Globalization eh? Decided one of these days to do a case study of the influence of satelitte TV on young female Hausa -- beginning with my own household.

And the nine year old boy is complaining about his keyboard (we drove to town together) -- so off to Beirut Road to buy replacement. And of course we had to branch to Mr. Biggs for "lukekiyar kaza" (his lexicon) and coke. He wanted pizza from Pizza Hot, but they had gone on break.

It was only after I got home that I realised I did not get want I wanted to buy -- a 50 pack blank DVD carousel to back up my gigabytes of music rip-offs and ebook downloads. Too tired to go back -- plus it is blazing hot.

 Lol Prof, in 'ya'yanka basu zama computer nerds ba, i dont know whose kids will be!!. So how is the computer sci a BUK? any good? Maybe i will enroll for another degree in that field....... ;D  ;D after this one.
PS how was my day today? Anything exciting to report? let me think.......... no same as usual..... yawn.... nothing exciting happened today.

Alas, I am afraid my kids' "nerdism" is restricted to spending literally hours on Hi5, Yahoo Chat, Skype and music downloads (Ciara, Shakira, Rihanna anyone? -- who are these people? I love rap, but i am old skool; also why do teenage girls like female rap artists -- is it some innate feminist gene conspiracy? Anyone sharing similar experiences?) We have to have obtain TWO separate internet accounts in the house to get some peace -- although the computer scientist (currently trying to sort out PASCAL -- wait until she gets to COBOL, hehehe!!) will go back to Kano University of Technology Wudil where she is in sophomore year. The computer science in BUK is good enough, but highly over-subscribed. The one at Wudil is more spaced out, greater contact hours and more personal attention. There is really a lot to be said for small colleges.

So what was the Yawning experience? Do tell!!!

Honestly there was nothing special to the day. I just yawned bcos there really was nothing ;D.
Ciara, Shakira, Rihanna, (not forgetting Beyonce - you must know her of course - the most beautiful girl in show business at present and talented to boot....dont know what she sees in JZ but i dont know anything about him, only that they look like Beauty and the Beast). These are the pretty young thing female artistes. The most talented of the four are Shakira and Beyonce actually. Check out Yahoo launchcast for the latest on all the current crop of musical artistes. Me I am of the old sch like u, and I cant stand a lot of the music that permeates these days, but there are plenty of exceptions, and I prefer rock music to rap.
Let me ask u, isnt COBOL a bit outdated as a language? PASCAL is supposed to be the stepping stone to learning computer programming, so maybe that is fine as a founding stone, what about the higher level languages like VB (supposed to be the easiest to grasp)? or C++, Pearl? JAVA? Are they on the menu? otherwise i am afraid the kids are not being taught what they are supposed to be taught in terms of languages. Anyway I dont know much about comp sci. after all. I am interested cos my son wants to study comp sci, so i want to know as much as poss about what goes on so that i can be of help to him. Anyway he wants comp engineering, which is a bit more sophis...so I am telling him to knuckle down and learn descrete maths...i dont know how helpful that is, but i am thinking that it is crucial to comp engineering.
So Wudil is a better option than BUK for computer studies? How strong is the curriculum?

Prefer rock, eh? You remind me of a thread I got into on this forum over two years ago where I declared my predilection for rock and almost got stomped to earth! Check the archives and you will see it. Apparently it was wrong to be BLACK and love rock. Sigh. I DO love rock -- heavy metal, for that matter. I have attended concerts in various locations in London (Lewisham, Hammersith Odeon, Dominion) and in Brighton, and in most cases I discovered I was almost the only "person of color" as they put it now. Hehehe! Even in the rock preference, I am old school -- Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Twisted Sister (obscure, I know, but damned good!) Judas Priest, Thin Lizzy, Budgie, Magnum, Iron Maiden, etc. I am afraid I missed out the Metallica revolution. Have you tried progressive rock? Y'know, Genesis, Alan Parson's Project, Pink Floyd, Renaissance, Grateful Dead, Frank Zappa, Mike Oldfield, Gong, Marillion, Van Der Graaf Generator? Also some Euro-Rock such as Gandalf, Eloy, Ashra Tempel, Can, Amoon Duul? Check them out, pretty good music -- which explains why BOFs (boring old farts) are almost always old school!

I got into rap up close and personal. I lived in Berkeley, California for sometime, and I was smack in the middle of arap community, it was unavoidable -- and bloody pleasant! This was at the time rap was in its infancy (having been acquainted since my sojourn in Chelsea in the mid 1980s; I still have my vinyl recordings of those early experiments). One genre whose birth I witnessed in the Bay Area was MetalRock -- starting with a group called Hard Corps, long before Limp Biskit and Kid Rock came along. Ah, life, eh?

Kids these days are into things that will make your flesh crawl -- but I studiously ignore the generation gap and often try to listen to their stuff (understandably, they don't like mine!) -- sound more like pop to me (remember Kajagoogo, Adam and the Ants, Human League, Imagination, etc); but it is their thing. Last time in was in the UK in September last year, I was a given a two-page fullscape sheet with names of records to buy! That's I got to know Shakira, Ciara, Rihanna etc. I told them to forget it because they are costly. HOWEVER, I can them ALL the music they want from a Chinese blog! Hehehe! Their brother is into what I am into -- Ali Farka Toure, heavily. We are currently listening to SAVANE. Beautiful stuff.

Kids these days also seem to be more set on a silicon future than our generation. I remember how every kid in our class wanted to become a doctor. I hated the idea of becoming a doctor, so I was an oddball. Now they are more tuned to computers -- must be something to do with all this sat comm. I would prefer Computer Science to Computer Engineering (and believe me, I did not even know what Ibtihal, my daughter, chosed on her JAMB form as I told her to choose something she is interested in, not something her friends are doing). I was happy when she got Computer Science, because that is the core of the silicon valley they are heading towards. Computer Engineering bogs you down to hardware, and in Nigeria, with our "apprentice mechanic" mindset you really have to negotiate through mazes and mines to get anywhere along that route. Computer science is more maths, more -- computing! The reason they are taking them through the languages is the get "dirty under the hood" philosophy. Depsite all the WIMP envinroment now, the tutors -- and their curriculum designers -- still believe a little dirt does good. Don't worry though, the rest of the bells and whistles of computer programming are certainly on the menu as they move through the ladder. Don't forget, though, you have to support the tot with more help than the college can provide. We do that at home with the kids, going to often unusual places to get course materials, etc.

For my money, Wudil is definitely it -- I have seen it up close and personal! So give it a thought. Good luck to the tot!

u are truly a living encyclopaedia of rock! Some of those names are out of my depth. I know of black sabbath, led zeppelin Judas Priest but I have never listened to them. I liked thin Lizzy (boys are back in town) pink floyd (brick in the wall) and I think I must have listened to Genesis's songs although I cant remember any. Most of the rest, I dont know of. I think I know Mike Oldfield somehow I seem to remember the name from somewhere. I know nothing of Euro rock. I guess I am not much of a  metallica.  Anyway, my rock preference runs to David Bowie, Elton John Yellow brick road, saturday night, crocodile rock,  my song simply unbelievable classics always fresh always enjoyed)  Queen (Bohemian Rhapsody, Killer Queen, save me, Fat bottomed girls, Bicycle race ) Exile, White Snake, the Beatles (wow! wow! wow! love 'em), Peter Frampton (My heart goes boom boom boom remember that?) Simon and Garfunkel (Mrs Robinson any day please) Aerosmith (I dont wanna close my eyes i dont wanna fall asleep cos i miss u babe and i dont wanna miss a thing). Dire straits (love them so cool and timeless remember 'sultans of swing?') and Bruce Springsteen. Bruce Springsteen was a late entrant in my world of music cos I first noticed him when i saw him in concert (on TV) gyrating to his mega hit 'dancing in the dark' Unfortunately I couldnt stay and watch cos I was in the thick of  semester exams and  everything took a back seat during those stressful times. but the song stuck in my mind and later much later, I was able to get an album of his greatest hits. He is somethin of an oddball. He looks the very height of rock chic, but his music has lots of the country flavor in it and frankly speaking i am not a great fan of country rock. I prefer the jarring jangle of electric guitars.

still cant stand rap music. The only one I can  listen to is Eminem, then I did like what's his name? who made rap mainstream? mc hammer!!! then tupac possibly. But honestly, I hate rap music.
U still got vinyl? My dad had until a few yrs ago in his dwindling collection of memorabilia, a vinyl original of the song 'some day' from West Side Story  and a few Fats Domino from the 50s!! Lol I am not sure if they are still there, but my sister and I were wondering just how much that West Side Story vinyl would fetch in today's market!!

Oh I simply loved Adam and the Ants (Stand and deliver yr money or yr life; Prince Charming) Oh he was hilarious, but he couldnt last of course; the music was too 1 dimensional and for the moment. I liked human league also with their classic dont u want me baby? when I was at sch and that song came out we used to twist the words to dont u want my baby dont u want him ohooo but that was really a great song. I count it as one of my all time favs. There was Kim Wilde with her Kids in America at the same time which was a great tune at the time, but is slightly lame in retrospect. However, she and Nena, brought out a fantastic single in 2003 half german half english called Anytime Anyplace Anywhere.
I'd love to listen to some Senegalese music. There is currently a blind couple who seemed to have made a name for themselves in Europe. I dont really like their music. I prefer that Senegalese guy (the one who had a hit with Nene Cherry called Seven seconds).  So maybe I will download yr collection of Senegalese music and Saadu Bori if u have him when I see u in sha Allah.

There is also an Egyptian artiste called Amr Diab or something like that. He also made waves some yrs back. Do u remember a classic and very famous egyptian female artiste? The greatest of her time? She was given a national burial when she died in Egypt (either in the eighties or seventies, dont know) I have forgotten her name. I used to listen to her so very often. Oh she was so famous, she used to have the Saudia royalty as her audience. She was a classical musician however, but her voice was divine.

Yes I was relieved when he said he wanted to study comp engineering/ science. Whichever. Cos the tendency is to go for the arts or social sciences and frankly speaking in Nigeria, the social sciences is an overbloated field. It is easier to study comp sci, bcos there is so much material out there and much of the time its a hands on approach. In so far as u can sit the tots down with a good machine and the manuals in front of them, the sky's the limit or so i think. But I still think that there is a bright future in comp engineering. Maybe not in Nigeria, at the moment, but its a skill that is highly prized. I mean imagine the strides being made everyday in that field. Its mind boggling. One cant keep up. But it really needs ppl with a mind focused on engineering at the same time and my son is an artist by nature, so there will be a little conflict there. The good thing is that engineering is a design discipline as well so maybe he isnt far off the mark.

I don't know as I counln't detect where the goddamned problem lies. Further, I bought numeral time codes (at a very expensive rate, because an hour is just for a token fee of N50 there at BUK, but now... ::) ) That was being given me a hard blow whenever I tried it. I don't know why? Is it only me who this is happening to? I cannot almost always write replies-itsn't responding.

Interesting thoughts.  "Rap" is a distillation of rhythym. The words are used to accentuate rhythym rather than melody and as such is a natural progression of African-American or African- Caribbean music forms. If one goes back to the late fifties one finds strong elements of this trend in the music of Chuck Berry ( the most innovative figure in Rock 'n' Roll) and Little Richard though both produced their work in the traditional verse and chorus form which was then the only financially viable method of doing so and which was basically European format (and Scotch/Irish for Country music).

It could be translated straight into rap

I went out to the voting centre at exactly 10:00am
We waited for for good six hours without seeing any
sign of electoral materials. 

They arrived 6:00pm, and before you know it, its time
for Magrib Prayers and must of us couldnt come back
to cast our vote, because the environment is condusive.

But somehow, the election was held  ???  ???  ???.

Please help me and give me the exact problem and errors you have been having. What browser and version? are cookies disabled? Bandwidth? etc. Also I think this might be better to start another thread in the Welcome to the Online Forum.

As a matter of fact, as I'm not a computer literate, I cannot exactly tell you where this problem lies or how it is. I think I have had made this known since from my preceded reply.
Well, to help the matter out, I think I can give a bit description of it. ie I'll as usual sign in, start browsing normally.But, when I wanna write a reply to some topics, it'll then hooked. I use to refresh it and repeat this for several times but it won't respond. And sometimes, it'll even allow me to write it but when I try to post it.........Wallahi this even happened today. I spent thirty minutes trying to read the posts but I counldn't untill when I bought another fresh thirty minutes and changed system.

Are you using MS IE version 7?

if so try using another beowser like FireFox.

When IE came out and these updates kept popping up on my pc to change to ie 7, idid. What a mistake! It slowed my browsing time and i had lots of missed hits. Then someone told me that ie7 is vista compatible that is why it doesnt operate so well with xp OS. Well vista is very good but a bit of advice for those wanting to change to vista immediately; if u have sensitive and expensive software installed on yr pc, wait a while until the software vendors have brought out a vista compatible version of the software then u can switch, otherwise u might end up with an expensive white elelphant. 

In my country, the temperature is very hot, Imagine 36.8 centigrade and you will surely feel that you are inside an oven

Second, I got some peeping tom eyes because of the hotness of the weather it was really a bad weekend

Third, the weather got me a stomachache It must be very hard for me that I cannot withstand heat stroke thats why I leave on my office

It just make me wonder what ii is hot here when we are surronded by water; how about if you are Nigeria, what should be the hottest temperature over there ??? ??? ::)

I've been  having a cold beer in the Central Hotel in Kano at midnight with the temperature still over 110F (43C) and have seen measurements off the Tarmac at Kano Airport at 140F (68C) in late May.  Temperature in the sun in Kano just before the rains very often gets up to around 120f.

This seems to be happening all over the place. It just happened to us a couple of weeks ago in Kano. What do you think is the cause of this?

Abdalla - thanks a lot for your response to my simple and humble question. It is interesting to know that there are that much internet Cafes in the great city of "mai mata - mai mota". I will be interested in getting the GIS data after you are done mapping it, we may upload it google-map. I will also like to get the metadata for that... such attributes as location, opening date, services, bandwidth, average customers, price, etc - thanks again...

Its raining in Maiduguri, the capital city of Borno.

Is the PM working at all?

Well here I am in Morocco, to be precise, a town called Assilah. I am here to attend the CONFERENCE ON MUSIC IN THE WORLD OF ISLAM which will last from 8th to 16th August this year. It was organised by Maison des Cultures du Monde, Paris. Full details at http://www.mcm.asso.fr/site02/music-w-islam/presentersen.htm (http://www.mcm.asso.fr/site02/music-w-islam/presentersen.htm). The Conference brings together over 60 anthropologists, ethnographers, ethnomusicologists and musicians together in one place to share ideas and field experiences. My paper is titled Transnational influences and national appropriations: the influence of Hindi film music on Muslim Hausa popular and religious music. Strange, innit, how a very innocuous topic could generate such international interest.

Assilah is a beach town, with a lot of beach bums (both resident and tourists from other part of the country on holiday, including LOTS of children) strutting around trying to look cool. These guys are weird. They are Muslims, but they believe they are more European than Europeans. Islam is not certainly close to their hearts. I mean I went to the Friday mosque and only older youth and old people are there -- the teeming young people that throng the beach front (not to mention infront of the mosque too) just disappeared; and re-appeared AFTER the jumu'at prayers.  And by the way, FOREIGNERS are not allowed inside mosques! A friend from Singapore who looked faintly Malaysian was denied entry to the mosaue.

The conference is getting really interesting for two reasons. First I am learning a lot from seasoned ethnographers and getting one or two ideas for my own research in Kano; second, I was given a verbal (to be followed by firm written) invitation to go to the University of Michigan next year and present the SAME paper I presented here -- the guy in charge of the African Studies program was highly impressed with what I presented. Alhamdulillah.

I have also met ethnomusicological legends that I have only READ about, such as Margaret Kartomi who has done a lot of interesting work on BORI in Indonesia and Java.

The food is super fantastic -- world class cuisine for breakfast (which I don't eat because I have not cultivated the habit of eating breakfast throughout my relatively young life), lunch and dinner. Dinner is always followed by a live CONCERT from one reknowed world musician or other -- giving me ideas for futher things like that in the future.

So all told, Alhamdulillah. WE are not even midway through the program, so there is lots to cover (about sixty papers in all).

God i hate to judge but 2day I saw a guy, he had rings in both his ears periced, has a necklace on. He got his hair braided and his pants almost falling down. Every time i see guys like this i cant help but wonder why do some GUYZ wanna go thru the pain of sitting for so many hours braiding thier hair when they dont really have to it? pierce their ears noes and all when they dont really have to do it. i guess is the generation guys wanna be girls now(sry some guys) how gay is dat LOL.

You did raise a very important point concerning "borrow-borrow" or to its more anthropological term, "appropriation". About 60 papers are being presented and most of them touch on the issue of borrowing styles of music from other cultures. Unfortuanately, in the absence of cherished and accepted Hausa musical tradition, the borrow-borrow of Hausa does not really bother anyone -- either way, music is a low class activity, so no one cares whether it is original or borrowed.  This is not peculiar to north of Nigeria, it is prevalent in other non-Western Muslim societies (e.g. Azerbaijan). Here in Assilah, they have street vendors selling Arab music -- most of it patterned on Western pop melodies. Sigh. "Globalization" eh?

I am trying to see if I could do the little that I can in creating what I call HAUSA ART MUSIC. This is music that FORCES you to listen to the genius of the players -- in other words, we will focus on the instruments, and acoustic too, none of this synthesizer stuff. I have already arranged one performance of just two minutes with AREWA (Nasiru Garba Supa's band) and I want to see if we can take it to the next level -- producing performances that last at least 30 minutes non-stop; and NO SINGING!!! I want to take them to a situation where the instruments SPEAK on their own, not to follow the voices, as is typical with Hausa music which is a call-and-response formation between the music, the instruments and the vocalists. All this pretty ideal, but time, energy and money are needed to do this, and this is going to be tough getting these.  :-\ :-\ :-\

Well the conference ends on Monday, but I will hang around the town for two more days, writing my report on the beach before heading for Amsterdam and a seven hour wait. No sun tan, though; I am already deeply tanned! ;D ;D ;D

Globalization, what do we do about it? Nothing I guess, so we might as well make the good out of it. And it's not only about music or movies. It encompasses almost our whole way of life. The way we talk, walk, dress etc are rapidly changing; swallowed by eastern/western cultures. And what are we doing about it? Just yesterday someone was telling me he now finds it easier to express himself in english than hausa. That set me thinking: where will our dear language be in the next 100 years?

About the Hausa Art Music thing, I believe you're doing a great job. I loved AREWA's performance during that concert at BC; tradition laced with modernity. Talking about "non-stop music/instuments without singing"  reminded of  a music like that someone from Niger Repub. gave me. I forgot the musicians name. It was long ago, I used to have his tape which I enjoy a lot. Sort of a "jazz", you know.

I agreed with you 100% what you said about the soldier who colect N50 bribe from you. But waht I want you to under stand is that is not his fault. Just go to Ghana here you find out what they pay there Soldiers salary is mothern Nigeria. You keep somebody on the street for 24hrs and you feed him with small food may be twice in a day, how do you expect that soldier to perform 100%. Its the duty of all of us to continue helping them with other things like bread or water when we are passing. I beleived that if to say you offered him a Loaf of bread that very time he will prepared it mothern that N50. If you can recalled the time when Taliban Group attack Police Station kill many Police officers in kano recently, it was the same soldiers that came out and attack the Group that time. I beleived that very time they ask you to go near them that very time you can not do so. So if they are in action you cant think of soldiers asking you for anything. Here's some stuff I was thinking about on the treadmill earlier today. I don't bring my phone,which's equipped with more music than itunes ,to the gym anymore. I can't really explain it except to say that there's something unsatisfying about it. The songs kind of drill into my ear when I'm working out and I can't concentrate on the parts of the music I want to. (I told ya I couldn't really explain it.) ;D


1.) Why do they sell junk food at gyms? I mean,why would you waste your time and energy,and the instructor's,just so you would take in more calories after the work out? It defeats the purpose of the workout.I seriously don't see the logic there.But to each his or her own.. ::)

2.) I just saw a commercial for Lexus featuring Elvis Costello, and as I like to pay attention to my reactions when I'm being sold something(as if I could ever afford a Lex,duh), I thought this was an interesting one. Here's the order of impressions made on me.

a. Oh look, there's Elvis Costello.
b. Man, that guy looks cool. I hope I look that cool someday.
c. How old is he? He's just plain cool. And it's got nothing to do with age. I'd like my cool to have nothing to do with age.
d. Do you just decide to do that and you can? I hope so. I'm deciding right now to be that cool.
e. He's talking about Beethoven. Interesting.
f. He's in a Lexus. Cool looking car.
g. Oh, it's a Lexus ad, centered on the stereo system.
h. THAT STEREO SYSTEM SOUNDS GREAT, I BET.


Two things here interest me - number one, at no time during the commercial did I have the response of "Oh, look, Elvis Costello got paid to do a Lexus commercial. Times must be tough!" The words "sell-out", "shill", "hock" also never came to mind. Just how cool I thought Elvis Costello was and how that stereo system looks like it sounds great. And that's where number two comes in. How difficult must it be - and subsequently how impressive is it - to sell a sound to you over a TV commercial? The car looks like it smells like brand-new upholstery and that stereo looks like it sounds great. Elvis looks cool, the car looks cool, and everybody goes away happy. Maybe I'll re-think my stance on things... :)


3.) Reading on a treadmill is very bad for my eyes. :'(


4.) I want to hear Donny Hathaway's "The Ghetto" from Donny Hathaway Live. You should find it if you can. It's one of the best recordings of all time. 8)


5.) That Donna chick is so hot she's burning! And she's beautiful on the inside too.I mean,could there ever be anything cooler than having your towel handed by a traffic-stoppingly,stairs-falling,breath-takingly gorgeous chikalah after a long boring session of aerobics? ;D ;D :D




And then my 20 minutes was up and I moved to work on back and obliques. I stopped thinking so much then, so that's all I've got for now...

Its hourly I believe. So if u work 8hrs a day that is 36 pounds sterling per day

On my way to kano (i wont disclose the purpose),
a very terrible and deadly accident in front of me.
I was driving towards Azare town just 50KM to
Azare precisely when I just saw a Toyota Jeep
summersaulted into the bush.

I immediately came to an abrupt stop with other
passerbys, wallahi sai kun gani, Jeep din nan yayi

came closer trying to rescue them, one was shouting

bayana ya karye, while I was trying to confort him

to Potiskum General Hospital, its better they go back to
Azare Medical Centre where they will get a better medical

On Saturday while returning, sai aka ce mun wai wannan
mai cewa bayansa ya karya ya rigamu gidan gaskiya.

and today Tuesday 21 August, 2007 while coming from
Ilorin, about 60 KM to Gwagwalada, came across a deadly
accident again, involving long truck delivering goats to the

Just couple of weeks ago, one person on the SUV was driving so close to me as if he would push me off the road. Later I saw the vehicle went of the road into the bush...

I went to Katsina last weekend to my sister's house. Something struck me; i.e after spending hours of tedious motor sitting and reckless driving of our old, bulky and dirty driver. I reached there very late and deadly tired. The road is under construction since from Kusada to Kankiya. There is thick dust of dry sand and kai everything to make you loath the atmoshpere.

To cut the story short because there is not ime--less than five in my system. What I want complain about or rather surprise me with that city is that; they don't know anything about an eratic power supply that we are beggining to become used to here in Kano. The power didn't even shake since I reached up till time I leave. Why? Abin san kai ne Mr. President?

Currently in Mombasa, Kenya, and watching the absolutely stunning Indian Ocean right from this hotel (Nyali Beach Hotel) workstation. Been here since Tuesday. Went to the old Mombasa city yesterday and it was amazing. Just like Kano city -- twisting narrow alleyways and cobbled streets (no, we don't have cobbled streets in Kano!). Population a mixture of Arabs, Indians, Africans -- all apparently living harmoniously. I think there is a lesson here to be learnt.

Coming back to Nigeria on Sunday, back to grind. Grrrrrr.

Honestly, today and for the last couple of days....I've been milling over the idea of Eid celebration- obviously reluctant because like a lot of you, I've spent many of my young years hyperactively celebratin Eid......*Holdin little dress parties-the foods, the drinks, mum does me all ova in some pink frock...come to think of it now....a reflection of *Barbie doll goes to Hawaii* To accessorize, some new stockings n matching pumps, hair in twists- adorned with ribbon-bows etc..... Gettin made up again in d evening in another traditional frock ......u visit freinds, freinds visit u.... & vice-versa wit family, how every1 around you pampers and spoils you rotten......all in the name of Eid favourtism.......(but I likes!!) ;D

With my *little pony* messenger slingbag and by evenin, its filled with money, fresh mints from my old man....& the best part, is my uncle tossin me up in the air & twirling me......& to tell you the truth.....I juss luv imitatin aeroplanes!....(I still remember wee! wee!- very stupidified during my young days). By sundown, freinds n I will sit to count our riches and funny enough I always end up wit the most monies lol..... I will remain all clunged up to my bag, till I fall asleep. On one account, only to wake up in the mornin to find the housegirl done away with my monies & other house valuables.......ending up all puffy eyed....n sober.....and 4 many consecutive days to follow....sober I will remain with my boisteriously stubborn urges of whinging n whining about my money and any mistake from any1! Would even complain about the air that breeze!

Now thinkin about it, I dont even wana do squat!!! I juss wanna have a lie in bed and sleep........ And I have been religious about this idea of celebratin my Eid peacefully n quietly. Needless to say, I have a little one  to do similar things I observed years back............But I cant help not worrying over.....cus I just dont know....... Seriously, and to tell you the truth, after so many years of carnivalling Eid...., I just wanna weasel myself outside the celebration/social aspect of Eid.
Anyway, I am sitting here marinating right now. It feels kinda neat and hey to celebrate with my sweet little one & everybody else but.....I wouldnt mind cloggin under my sheet covers & havin a deep sleep! :-\.......It would be a nice indulgence for me!

My dairy to day was to hand in a neva ending assignment
that am glad its all done and dusted. The way i was waiting for the bus today
to get into school and hand this work in was no joke. Let me just give you a jist.
All i was saying today was "EXCUSE ME PLEASE", " CAN I GET THROUGH", "THANK YOU",
"SORRY" theses words were the only ones said in the bus, now you can imagine how packed
it was. Then i arrived without an ID card standing at the gate hopelessly waiting for someone
kind enough to come out so that i can get in, there was the time going hand in time at 5:00pm
it was 4:50pm 10mins to go, i thought thats it am dead no one seems like they'll be coming out
for me to get in. Luckily someone did approach the gates opened, walla sai nakama skirt dina na arta
a guje, reached the class inna ta haki went over to teacher handed in the work (PHEW).That was close.

I kicked my neighbor's ass a coupla days ago! Dude has issues for real! How can anyone be so callous as to turn a 4-bedroom joint complex apartment into a damn zoo? First,he had two puppies,a cat,a fish tank,and now a f****king Carribean parrot? Nah,white boy I ain't having that.Nah-uh! I barely get any decent sleep ,not to mention that those damn animals are making a hell of mess of the conservatory! Not only that,he sometimes,whether by design or by coincidence switches our bills(he guzzles up wayyyy more electricity than I do).Last night,he invited over his equally filthy ,pink faced,freckled drunk buddies for a magarita in my living  room and when I asked him why he did that he says he's only trying to help me expand my social circle.And was like "Boy,whaaaaatttttt?" "Since when did I need help making friends..I have more than enough to last me three lifetimes!" It got a little heated and I bodied the loser hard against the wall.Luckily,we were in his section so I got to smash a few portaits off the wall (which bore his family photo or whoever those people were) And boy ,did it feel nice to finally punch someone in the face after what seemed like an eternity of pent-up anger.We made up this morning though,when he brought fresh cofee and might I add,his hawt cousin Anne,over to the conservatory.Now I disagree with the Eurocentric standard of beauty but those intensely blue eyes on that chick Anne are nothing short of ..speechless.Now I gotta call her..

their day at school, after solving some home
work (assignment), the elder told me that "Baba
gobe ba makaranta, an bamu hutu" I denied ittt
saying that she is trying to run away from tommorow's
studies at school.

Early morning today 25th October, 2007, I instructed
their Mums to prepare them for school.  To my surprise
the school gate was locked, ko maigadi ma babu.

Do you know what, when I turned round, the elder one
sitting at the back seat starting laughing seriously,
even falling down on the seat. "bana gayamaka ba"
I was ashamed wallahi - the other small one immediately
opened her lunch box and started demolishing all the
eatables, since their is no school.

Lesson learnt:

I closed from office very late as usual, when
i got home, while enquiring my daughters about
their day at school, after solving some home
work (assignment), the elder told me that "Baba
gobe ba makaranta, an bamu hutu" I denied ittt
saying that she is trying to run away from tommorow's
studies at school.

Early morning today 25th October, 2007, I instructed
their Mums to prepare them for school.  To my surprise
the school gate was locked, ko maigadi ma babu.

Do you know what, when I turned round, the elder one
sitting at the back seat starting laughing seriously,
even falling down on the seat. "bana gayamaka ba"
I was ashamed wallahi - the other small one immediately
opened her lunch box and started demolishing all the
eatables, since their is no school.

Lesson learnt:

I chose to write down my memoirs of Mr. Presidents visit
to Maiduguri in this thread because of its historic nature
which deserves to be written down in a special diary, and
as far as kline is concern, this is my diary.

One thing i noticed is Mr. Presidents determination to fulfil
his promise of coming to Maiduguri, despite the bad wethe
experienced today in Maiduguri.  I reliably gathered that
Mr. President insisted that the flight took off and the pilot
should used whatever skills at his disposal to land the plane,
because the Presidents Aide at the Airport confirmed to him
that Dan-Bornos and his kindreds are waiting for him in
millions since 7am, and the presidents thought he wount
dissapoint us.  Though there was a delay of 2 hrs because
of the wether.

Mr. President stepped out of the "AIR FORCE ONE" purchased
by Olusegun Obasanjo after so much cry by the nation (forgive
us our tresspassses, for we dont know what we were doing
then and never understood the tactics of governance) waving
his hands constantly.  He was given the traditional welcome
at the airport with all the good and bad dattijan Maiduguri at
the airport.  Traditional dance and Kissing of the sword was
also performed, very impressive indeed.

His Mercedez Car was brought out from the bottom of the
Air Force One (Kai Bature ke nan, wato he moves around with
his car)  SAS accompanied him while they drove majestically
and Dan-Borno & Co patriots continued shouting in a joyous
mood "Allah Ya Kareka daga sharrin su Nuruddeen da Husnaa"

The president firstly commissioned the newly tarred dualised
express road along Kano road, then drove on it to the 777
housing estate where he also commissioned the estate, he
is actually impressed with the quality of work.

They drove to the newly constructed Hospital named after the
illustrious son of the state Professor Emeritus Umaru Shehu
of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.  One thing that
impressed the President there was he knew that last week the
hospital was razed down by some infidels, how come within a
week the hospital is back to its shape with all the necessary
equipment as if it was a lie he was told.  Thanks to SAS, he
worked day in day out to see that the hospital is not only
commissioned, but back to start work fully.

The new Trailer Park was also commissioned behind Pompomary
housing estate and also a dualised express way linking bulunkutu
with Tashan Baga was commissioned by the servant leader.

From there he drove to the Shehu's Palace to pay a traditional
homage. 

The newly constructed BRTV Studio Complex and ultra modern
equipments was also commissioned by Mr. President.  He granted
a short interview of 2 minutes to prove that the TV Station is really
transmitting and he showed his happiness, especially the studio
which conforms to an international standard.

They now drove to the seat of power, journalist were restricted
from entering the presidential lodge, where Mr. President is expected
to say his prayers and have a rest (Amma gaskiya mutumin fa bashida
lafiya).  TOgether with some prominent personalities and highly
placed individual in the state, the servant leader lunched with them
and they finally zoomed to the Ramat Square for a final phase of the
official visit.

At the Ramat Square, he met millions of citizens waiting for him.  As
usual he waved hand while entering the square.  The Governor
gave his wellcome address which was very impressive and seized
that opportunity to request all the goodies from the presidency to
the benefit of Borno State.  The reply of Servant-Leader with some
reiteration of his 7 point agenda is even more sweeter than the
speech by our governor.

Finally, he prayed for the peace of this nation and he departs to the
airport, while mukuma ya kubayi in reversed order disappeared from
the square to our various destinations.

Observations

1.   Why is it that in a democratic setup, still the president uses the
      military as his Orderly/ADC?  wannan abin ya dame ni sosai.  Take
      a look at the American President where we boast to copy from, i
      doubt if there is even a uniformed police officer in his entourage
      not to talk of a military officer.  Is it the Military mentality's ghost
      that is still pursuing us?  Even the Police ADCs, is it constitutional?

2.   While Mr. President was delivering his speech at the Ramat Square,
      i noticed with keen interest how is used to caugh after every sentence
      and trying hard in maintaining a low (normal) tone of his speech and
      other salient features proves beyond doubt that this man is really
      sick, and i just pray that S. 144 (1) & (2) is not invoked to my favourite.
