Today President Obasanjo has withdrawn assent to the dichotomy bill what happens if he assents to it tomorrow.
Wither Northern Nigeria?????????????????????

I want this subject to be discussed in this forum, yan kano, yan arewa, please comment. Derivation is now 13% if it becomes 50 or 60% what do we do? Are we ready for that time? Mind you it is almost here'o. What do we have on ground in case states are allowed to control their resources, can we survive or are we going to be running to our southern brothers koko a hannu to beg for salaries?

I have read an article on Gamji.com (The Future of Something that will be left of Nigeria By Kunle I Sowunmi Kulsho@yahoo.com)I think every Northerner needs to read that to know the average thinking of the Southerner and their future ambition!!!!

I'm trying to get a little educated about this topic but the little I know leads me to believe that the North knew this was coming, maybe just not when. The Niger-Delta area has been agitating for more oil money and development of that region since Michael Jackson was cool.

I think it would be good for the North to be less dependent on oil money and try to get back to its fundamentals like agriculture, mining, leatherworks and a little thing called education. This could also be an excellent opportunity, if the bill goes through and we lose significant state govt. income, for pressure to build on the current political ruling class to more effectively manage their budgets. Alot of the money goes straight into some privileged pockets anyway. We could actually have some accountability for a change. Wouldn't that be great !!

Besides, instead of paying the workers salaries, they keep the money in banks for months to collect interest for themselves. By the way where's the political Sharia on that issue ? Or are all the banks shutdown in Zamfara ?? Maybe the locals can let us know. It was a sorry situation that happened in Jos recently when govt. workers actually killed their director for not paying salaries... don't mess with a poor man's money ..

As for the article, the rhetoric is a symptom of Southern ambition. Not a problem.. where's the Northern ambition and progressiveness ??? The drilling noise in the South must have driven them away.

Kdgirl you are right!!!! I keep asking what is wrong with us. We dont care about our people, our future, the next generation etc. Look at education for example, our current crop of leaders enjoyed the best from the public treasury. In Primary School they were given everything including uniforms and in secondary they even collected allowances, sums of naira just to get educated. Our Forefathers planned this to encourage them to be better leaders, to enact good policies and help grow the nation to compete with all nations and countries in the world.

What a set of leaders God has blessed us with!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! look at the whole country falling to pieces, No water, no electricity. Have you seen the tap water in Kano? Untreated and that is where it is available. The government in Kano State invited the president to commission work on the water system, how many months now and no progress. It is pathetic sometimes I feel like leaving, you know, checking out like Andrew. It is so baaaaad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I swear to you.

I was at a time working in a bank in Gusau and they are bankers to Zamfara State Government. I was opportuned then to work closely with the Governor, Alhaji Ahmad Sani. I think as at that time I can swear tio you and even be a witness to the fact that he doesn't keep funds for interest and even all encouragement from banks to do so met deaf ear from him he vehemently refused. And They paid salaries promptly and I think they are still doing that. I believe Yerima is a good person, generous, kind, sincere, open and honest. I still believe his Shari'a is not political. I have had a lot of discussions with him on the issue and he has not given me any reason to doubt him.

But honestly our leaders in the north are out of ideas. We need fresh blood, patriotice, honest, disciplined, moral and sincere people to take over.

Assalamu alaikum;

Thank you very much AbuMujahid for starting this topic. Also thanks a lot to all the people that responded so far.

What you have said about the current crop of Northern Leaders and about Our Forefathers is right on the mark and especially as regards to Education (Public). Please can you help enlighten us as to what you think is the reason why that "Our Forefathers" plans fail to encourage "Our Current Crop of Leaders" to be better leaders?

I think that our previous older generation of leaders many of who are around and sidelined, silenced and or retired, did a lot of things right. The only area that was not really strengthen which I think is the most important is in the area of LAW and ORDER.

You see, I think that all the problems (and more) that you have listed such as lack of Water, lack of Electricity, degraded public Education, non payment of salaries, etc, can be linked back to Lack of or inadequate LAW and ORDER. Just take one of these problems, analyze it as to what is the cause of the that problem, then analyze that problem. If you keep going back (using cause and effect or effect and cause Logical analysis) you would eventually arrive at Lack of Law and Order. Everything in any society reverts to Law and ORDER. Without it there will not be a civil social society. You can actually measure the level of societal development or lack thereof by the LAW and ORDER mechanism in that society.

When I said LAW and ORDER, I mean LAW and ORDER (Justice is but one part of it) equally for you and me, for rich and for the poor, for the Government and the governed, for Rulers and their subjects, for Employer and the employee, for House master and the House servant. In other words, LAW and ORDER applied to everyone - no one above the LAW and ORDER.

What I usually like to do is take a problem, apply reverse cause and effect logic to it and try to find the solution to it even if it is not solvable. In this case of LAW and ORDER, I am still unable to find any solution (even un-solvable one) to it as far as our society is concerned. So what do you think is the best way to improve or to make our LAW and ORDER strong and fair enough to help solve all or most of our problems? Of course we can keep and continue to pray for it is only ALLAH subhana wa ta'ala that can help... Our Prophet Rasulullah (sallahu alaihi wasallam) has said:" The weapon of a believer is Dua (Prayer)."

QuoteIt is pathetic sometimes I feel like leaving, you know, checking out like Andrew. It is so baaaaad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I swear to you.
AbuMujahid, Please do not entertain this kind of thought, because it is people like you that we really need at home and when you apply cause and and effect logic to leaving the country, you will come to the conclusion that in the long run it will not solve any of the problems you have earlier innumerated. I am saying this to you because I have been on both sides i.e.. within the country and also outside many times. Home is where your are always going to be even if you are outside. That is why I say "Kaini Kano Ko a buhun Barkono!". As a matter of fact, I am now in the process of checking back in again and hopefully this time around with more wisdom, maturity and by the will of God, I will make it. So please stick around and lets keep on doing our part no matter how small our own part may be.

It is also very heartwarming to know about your discussions ?with Governor, Alhaji Ahmad Sani (Yerima). These days, the indulgence in Ribaa (Interest) is so widespread in the world and so commonly encouraged by the Media and other societies that the many Muslims have unwittingly fallen into the trap of almost condoning and accepting them. So strongly has our Beloved Prophet (Sallahu alaihi wasallam) warned us of Ribaa (interest) and it's influence on the less fortunate. Also, so strongly has the words of Allah Subuhana wa Ta'ala in the Glorious Qur'an Kareem emphasize the need for a Muslim not to even come anywhere near Ribaa. As Muslims we should repent for such indulgences and take stock of our business dealings now; and remove ANY RIBAA that contaminates us.

Again, I will like to conclude by saying that our problems are rooted in the problem of LAW and ORDER, and that I do not know how we can Solve that, and that if we can solve this one important issue, our problems will start to dissipate relative to how strong and fair our LAW and ORDER is...

"O ye who believe! Stand out firmly For justice, as witnesses To Allah, even as against Yourselves, or your parents, Or your kin, and whether It be (against) rich or poor: For Allah can best protect both. Follow not the lusts (Of your hearts), lest ye Swerve, and if ye Distort (justice) or decline To do justice, verily Allah is well-acquainted With all that ye do. ?(Quran Kareem, 4:135)"

"O ye who believe! Stand out firmly For Allah, as witnesses To fair dealing, and let not The hatred of others To you make you swerve To wrong and depart from Justice. Be just: that is Next to Piety: and fear Allah. For Allah is well-acquainted With all that ye do. ?(Quran Kareem, 5:8 )"

FDQ - tare zamu yi mulkin, ko ? (girl power!)

Abu Mujahid - it is quite disheartening what's happening to our Northern collective soul, or maybe even that doesn't exist anymore. But let's move beyond the obvious. The littany of problems is unending. I think more of us need to get into these civil servant or consultancy jobs (ie special assistants) to really bring in new ideas. We also need to stop recycling the same so-called Northern leaders - we need fountains not drains!

Malam Salisu - No doubt law and order (love the show!) are critical to our success as a country. However if the people are not educated about these laws, their consequences and have no interest in abiding by them, you are, as they say, itching for a fight. We really need to get educated and we need good leadership just like those pioneers from the past.

Also, we have to pray and act, not pray and then dream. We Northern Muslims forget that all the Prophets worked so our to-do list should include changing our attitudes about the dignity and honor of a full day's work.

A huta lafiya.

kdgirl -Thank you for responding to my LAW and ORDER (Justice) hypothesis or theory.

You have raised a very important issue/problem, and that is "People not Educated"
QuoteHowever if the people are not educated about these laws, their consequences and have no interest in abiding by them.
Now lets stick to this one and only issue for the time being and kindly ask the simple and fundamental question - Why are people not educated? Is it corruption? and if so, why? Is it lack of, or inadequate funding of our educational system? and if so, why? Is it non-payment or under payment of teachers and other educational providers? and if so why? Why can't our educational and Informational systems educate people?

If you keep asking these questions, sooner or later you will find out that the root problem is LAW and ORDER (Justice is one part of it). Fix that system and you would be on your way to educating people. Without it, no amount of increased Funding to the educational or informational systems would help educate the people...

Mal. Salisu I cannot thank you enough for your advice and guidance and I have done the cause and effect logical analysis and everything now makes sense. LAW and ORDER is fundamental to any nations development. I realized that Nigeria and of course most underdeveloped nations lack this important aspect of national development. Put in contrast USA or any European Country to an African Country like Nigeria or DRC (especially the Mobutu years). In the developed world none is above the law, remember the Monica Lewinsky scandal and how the most powerful president in the world then was brought under the hammer of the law and was almost sacked out of his office for Gross Misconduct, perjury etc. Compare that to the feeble attempt by the Nigeria's House of Reps to impeach or try president Obasanjo for same/similar offences, it didn't happen because this is the only country in the world where you'll commit a crime and then go free because of reconcilliation by some important figure. All for what, to avoid bloodshed they say. And these sorts of settlements keep happening even at the local police station and that is where the problem is, PRECEDENT. That is everybody can break the law and nothing happens. In case you don’t know if the next president committed any offence and impeachment proceedings are brought against him, some former Head of states probably including OBJ will go to the NASS and reconcile them.

As far as I am concerned the major problem that our leaders have is lack of COURAGE. They don’t have courage to take decisions or to standby decisions taken this therefore leads to abuse of law and order. If the leadership of the Nat. Assembly for example have had courage to impeach the President no other president will come to power and abuse the laws, not even state governors will allow themselves to be caught under those laws. And everybody will know that you can’t break the law and go free. Lets' look at the Buhari/Murtala Administrations, they were stern and arrested a lot of untouchable people and of course applied the Law and people sit up and things started improving before the interruptions of Dimka and IBB.

Salisu I believe you 100%, problem is LAW & ORDER, and until we have a selfless and courageous leader that will defy all entreaties and will not succumb to any pressure for of course as you've quoted the Holy Qur'an the Almighty Allah "O ye who believe! (Quran Kareem, 4:135)" such leader will not be afraid to deal with any abuse of the country's Laws and will bank and rely on the Almighty Allah and will only be afraid of Him. It is only then  we will be ready for development and will be counted as great among the comity of nations. And Nigerians will be respected as individuals.

We have to change and work hard to develop the country and ourselves, we have to educate ourselves and our people for is only with Education that we can develop. Lets' organise, form organizations and go to the hinterland to let people know their rights, their religions, their laws and help us believe in ourselves and our abilities. My two attempts to form such organizations were meted with failure as due to the hijacking of the organizations by politicians or distortion of the objectives of the organizations by the trusted executives/administrators.

In respect of my checking out is all joke, Nah this is the best country in the world. Come to think of it, do you know that over 95% of Nigeria is fertile soil and there is no state without mineral deposit and we are over 100 million people, this is a great country. May be we will be great in the future, I pray so.

Thanks Salisu!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
